Delhi-based Zexus Air likely to get wings

Sep 15, 2016

Delhi-based Zexus Air is on the verge of getting a national scheduled airline permit with the aviation regulator coming out with a public notice to invite comments. This is usually the last stage before granting the license.

Zexus along with two others – Air One Aviation Pvt. Ltd and Premier Air – had received a no-objection certificate aviation ministry in 2014 to launch nationwide operations subject to clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

“M/s Zexus Air Services Pvt. Ltd. has applied for grant of Air Operators Permit (Scheduled) for the purpose of providing Scheduled Air Transport Services in India,” the DGCA notice said. “The documents submitted by the applicant are being processed in this office. In order to comply with the requirements of Schedule XI of Aircraft Rules 1937, a notice is hereby given to the public and all the persons likely to be affected by the grant of this permit to submit their objections or suggestions, if any, on M/S Zexus Air Services Pvt. Ltd. within 15 Days of the issue of this notice,” it said.

According to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) website, Zexus Air plans to launch services with Embraer E175LR equipment. It was registered in April 2013.

Indian start-up Zoom Air adds first aircraft

Zoom Air (India) (Delhi Int'l) has added its first aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-200, to its fleet. According to the start-up, the jet will enter into service this month. The airline plans to maintain operations with five CRJ-200LRs out of Delhi Int'l.

Under its previous incarnation as Zexus Air (Delhi Int'l), the full-service start-up was able to secure its No Objection Certificates (NOC) from the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation but reportedly failed in its attempt to secure an Air Operators Permit (AOP) from the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Zoom Air reportedly plans to offer flights to Aurangabad, Aizawl, Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Durgapur, Dimapur, Jorhat, Kulu, Shillong, Mumbai Int'l, Ranchi, Kolkata, Hyderabad Int'l, Srinagar, and Lucknow initially.

'Zoom' to Delhi from Kolkata via Durgapur soon

Feb 1, 2017

A little over six months after Air India withdrew its operation in the Kolkata-Durgapur-Delhi route, Zoom Air, a Delhi-based airlines, starts its operation in the same routes seven days a week from Sunday. Kaji Nazrul Islam Airport (Andal) will also act as the regional hub of the company.

Koustav Mohan Dhar, executive director and CEO of Zoom Air, told TOI: "We will be running scheduled 50-seater full-service flight daily from KNIA. We are keeping the introductory fare rather low. From Kolkata to Durgapur, the fare will be Rs 1,000 and from Durgapur to Delhi, the fare will be Rs 3,000."

There are plans to introduce a daily flight to Mumbai and Hyderabad. Zoom Air India has got a series of Bombardier CRJ200LR (long range version) and 2 CRJ-900 aircrafts. "We look forward to support both from the state government and BAPL. Being a scheduled operator, we are not looking for viability gap-funding. VGF is mostly sought by non-scheduled flight operators," said Dhar.

So what do you reckon, people?

How long before Zoom Air zooms into the pages of Indian aviation history, and a few dusty CRJs are added to the derelict aircraft ramps in Delhi?

Or do you think they will survive and eventually thrive?

The bird has been on the Northern remote stands at IGIA T3, where the biz jets park. I have seen the bird behind ours, last month, as we went towards runway 29 to take-off. The bird is seen there, regularly. I wonder what is going on!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Counting pages for discussion on the airline in this forum before talks of grounding or stake sales will give you answers.

Air Pegasus has made it till Page 3.
Air Costa has made it till Page 4.
Mehair has made it till Page 1
Ventura Airconnect does not even have a thread here.

I dont think Zoom Air, Trujet & Air Carnival can make it to more than 5 pages. Same might be true for all future regional airlines.

But aren't Air Costa and Mehair still operational, as are Air Carnival and Trujet?

and the late lamented Kingfisher has made it past seven pages and counting.

Air Costa has 3 aircrafts - 2 are flying. 1 is down since few days. Not sure if they take delivery of 1 more aircraft that's planned.

Mehair has had 2 aircrafts and keeps changing routes based on local government's promotion and subsidies.

Air Carnival & Trujet has just started. Give it a year or two before the promoter's pockets get empty.

Kingfisher... Only 2 things get you what you want - Money and Good Connections (and alcohol) - VM had both (and king of the third). None of the current operators has such a good profile for fund raising for working capital & capex. Vijay Mallya was smarter than Subroto Roy.

Our part-time professor of Entrepreneurial Funding class in our MBA course showed us open examples of shell companies and fund raising. He showed me an example from DGCA's website - how KF had shell companies named VJM, Sid, Chameli, KF, Kings etc registered in Dublin, Cayman Islands and other tax havens leasing aircrafts to Kingfisher. Simply paying high rentals to the leasers will divert the bank loan funds to his own pockets there. He predicted the closure and about 2 years later KF was shut down. Thanks to Cape Town treaty, VJ got his planes back.

(Professor was a full time top employee with one of the companies that is usually associated by the opposition having our current PM's favors. He was at that time running 7-8 shell companies for his boss and was on his boss's speed dial list apart from his family.)

Zoom Air looks at starting operation from Arunchal's Pasighat

Feb 05, 2017

Zoom Air, India's 10th national scheduled airline which received an air operator's permit (AOP) on February 3, is in talks with the Arunachal Pradesh government to connect newly built Pasighat airport with its operational network, an official said on Sunday.

"We are looking to connect Pasighat airport in Arunachal Pradesh. In fact, we are in talks with the state government. We need to take some clearances from the state and Arunachal government also requires to get some clearances from Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)," the airline's Executive Director and CEO Koustav Mohan Dhar told IANS.

"It would take some time to get all the clearances. To be realistic, the operation in Pasighat is expected not before end of March," he added.

The airline will launch its scheduled commercial operation on Delhi-Kolkata-Durgapur-Delhi route on February 12.

"We are staring operation from February 12 with the triangle services-Delhi-Kolkata, Kolkata-Durgapur and Durgapur-Delhi route. There will be daily flights on these routes," said Dhar.

He also said that the airline planned to start the reverse triangle operations in evening on the same route by early week of March.

Incidentally, the Delhi-based airlines is starting its operation from Kaji Nazrul Islam Airport at West Bengal's Durgapur after Air India withdrew its operation on the Kolkata-Durgapur-Delhi route in June last year due to "operational reasons".

The new operator will have flights in regional routes.

"We are doing Delhi-Allahabad Kolkata-Shillong as of now. We also start operation on Delhi-Amritsar-Delhi route. We will explore regional routes and will have services in many of such routes," he said.

On Friday, the DGCA granted the AOP to Zexus Air Services which will run the operation with the brand name Zoom Air.

"This certifies that Zexus Air Services Pvt Ltd is authorised to perform commercial air operations....in accordance with the operations manual and Rule 134 of the Aircraft Rules 1937," said the AOP.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/zoom-air-eyes-hub-in-durgapur/articleshow/57118355.cms

Zoom Air eyes hub in Durgapur

Zoom Air will begin commercial operations on the Delhi-Kolkata-Durgapur-Delhi sector from February 15 with plans to connect Mumbai and Hyderabad to the steel town later in April. The carrier is even contemplating a maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) base for regional jets at Andal by year-end. Zoom Air CEO & director Koustav Dhar, who flew to Andal in a pre-launch flight on Sunday , said the airport would become the airline mini-hub as it launches flights to multiple destinations from here. Zoom will operate all the flights with 50-seater Bombardier CR-J 200 aircraft. It is a full-service carrier that will serve complementary meals on board.

"As more aircraft is inducted into the fleet, we will gradually add flights to Andal and eventually have four-five flights a day . We see potential business as the entire belt up to Dhanbad has a number of public sector giants as well as private firms whose executives currently travel via Kolkata," said Dhar.

Dhar said Zoom Air would aim to connect smaller cities like Durgapur with metros, thereby feeding other scheduled carriers like Air India, Jet Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet with passengers. "There are many airports to which other airlines will not fly because they don't have an aircraft that can cater to 50-60 fliers a day .With our 50-seater jet planes, we are perfectly placed to fill the gap," said Dhar.

While Zoom is beginning operations with connections to Durgapur, Kolkata, Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar it plans to add flights to Surat, Bhavnagar, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Jabalpur, Shillong and Aizwal in the summer schedule and Tirupati, Vijaywada, Vizag, Aizwal, Pasighat, Zero, Allahabad, Gorakhpur, Indore and Bhopal thereafter.

The carrier has two CRJ-200s now and three more Bombardier jets, that are currently undergoing C-check, are expected to get the DGCA nod for operations by next month. With plans to further augment the fleet to 10 aircraft by year-end, Dhar said he needed to establish an MRO base and Andal was likely to be the airport of choice.

The Bombardiar Canadair Regional Jets used by Zoom Air are long-range versions fitted with high performance CF34-3B19 engines. "The planes are extremely versatile for short-sector flying and aptly suited for tier-II and tier-III cities, including a major support to the ministry of civil aviation's initiative for Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS). In fact, we are the first airline to support and join RCS," said Dhar.

Promoted by Zexus Air Services, the carrier would also operate flights to Amritsar, Surat and Bhavnagar from New Delhi in the first phase of its operations with a fleet of three dry-leased CRJ 200LR planes.

The airline aims to have a fleet of five aircraft by April and plans to expand route network to destinations such as Tirupati, Vijaywada, Mumbai, Shillong, Aizawl, Pasighat and Zero (in Arunachal Pradesh), Allahabad, Gorakhpur, Indore and Bhopal, with a likely daily operations.

Two similar CRJ-200LR aircraft from Skyone FZE Aircraft leasing, UAE under dry lease would join its fleet by April 2017. This would take the total planes to five, a condition required under DGCA norms.

Zoom Air, which is headquartered at Gurgaon, is in the process of launching flight services by March-end. The company has written to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for providing flying slots to it at Surat airport and started base training for its crew members. The airline is likely to launch flight services from Surat to Mumbai, Goa and Delhi, sources said.

More Zoom flights for Durgapur by month-end

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/more-zoom-flights-for-durgapur-by-month-end/articleshow/57696329.cms

Quote:

The airline has been operating a single service everyday on the Delhi-Kolkata-Durgapur-Delhi sector since February 15. Though this allows passengers from Durgapur to fly directly to Delhi, they have to return via Kolkata the following day. Apart from the daily to-and-fro between the steel city and the Capital, the re-routing of flights will offer an additional daily service between Kolkata and Jorhat in Assam.

According to a source, the high demand from passengers in Durgapur has led to the re-routing. "Since the launch of the service, at least 90% seats have been occupied in each flight," an official said.

Zoom Air operates the Bombardier CRJ 200 aircraft with 50 seats. Around 30 Delhi-bound passengers currently get to board from Durgapur as the remaining seats are already booked from Kolkata. Such is the demand that the fare on the Durgapur-Delhi sector has at times shot up from Rs 3,000 to Rs 16,000.

Apart from senior executives working in public sector undertakings like Sail, the flight has been attracting traders, local businessmen and Punjab-bound pilgrims. Once another aircraft joins the fleet, Zoom Air intends to offer a connection from Durgapur to Amritsar via Delhi. The Kolkata-Jorhat daily link is also expected to become popular once the direct connections start.

Zoom Air - India's Newest Airline - To Fly To New Cities Soon

March 26, 2017

Zoom Air, India's newest full service airline, plans to operate daily flights to Jorhat and Shillong from May 1, 2017. "Zoom Air introduces daily connections to Jorhat and Shillong wef 1st May 2017 with direct Flights (first time) between Kolkata to Jorhat and Jorhat to Shillong as well as Shillong-Kolkata...," its chief executive officer and director Koustav Mohan Dhar told NDTV Profit in an emailed response. Zoom Air, which marked its entry as the 12th operational carrier in the domestic aviation market on February 15 this year, also added daily direct flights to Durgapur from Delhi and Kolkata recently.

Zoom Air also plans to start direct flights to Jabalpur, Mumbai, Surat and Tirupati this summer, the airline said on its website.

"From mid-May we are starting our Delhi-Bikaner-Delhi-Jabalpur-Kolkata-Dimapur-Kolkata-Jabalpur-Delhi flight which shall also operate as direct Delhi-Amritsar-Delhi evening services," Mr Dhar said, adding: "From June 10th we start in our third aircraft into western India connecting Delhi- Surat-Mumbai- Tirupati- Mumbai-Surat -Delhi flights."

Zoom Air's entry comes amid strong growth in the market and will further deepen competition, say analysts. The daily flights to Durgapur from Kolkata and Delhi will give "advantage for people from Delhi, Kolkata and Durgapur to have a same day return connectivity", the Zoom Air CEO added.

Zexus Air Services-promoted Zoom Air expects its second and third aircraft to arrive in the first week of April and around April 14, 2017, respectively. "...second and third Aircraft , same CRJ-200LR in 50 seater configuration, have completed Mandatory C Checks in Europe and shall be landing in 1st week of April (Aircraft 2) and around 14th April 2017 (for Aircraft 3)," Mr Dhar said.

Zoom Air "shall induct the remaining 2 aircraft by end of June/July 2017", the email noted. This will consolidate Zoom Air's current fleet to three aircraft.

"As per DGCA requirements, we shall restrict till March 2018 to 5 Aircraft operations only," the Zoom Air chief added.

Commenting on the airline's business plans, he said: "The Airline started as a completely Debt Free organization with Director own funding into the project. But soon (post 5 aircraft), we feel we should be looking at Venture Capitalists and PE funds to assist us in funding and expanding the Business in a phased manner."

Zoom Air plans to raise Rs100 crore

Feb 26 2018

Zoom Air is in talks with investors and private equity firms to raise about Rs100 crore to finance its expansion, managing director and chief executive Koustav Dhar said.

The airline, operated by Zexus Air Services Pvt. Ltd, is planning to extensively connect North East India under the government’s regional connectivity scheme (RCS).

“The airline, which is in advanced stage of talks with investors and private equity firms, hopes to raise this money before the end of the current fiscal,” Dhar said in an interview.

The scheduled operator plans to sell up to 30% stake to investors before the end of the calendar year, and at least 15% stake before 31 March 2018, Dhar said, adding the funds will be used to buy planes and operate routes under the RCS.

Zoom Air, which started flying on 12 February 2017, currently operates in the Delhi-Jabalpur-Kolkata sector. The airline, which runs its operations on three Bombardier CRJ-200LR aircraft, will add two more similar planes to its fleet by 30 April. Two of the five aircraft will be used exclusively to serve the RCS routes.

Dhar said the airline, which has been awarded six networks and 12 routes under RCS 2, will start its first flight under the scheme (Kolkata-Tejpur) by 15 March. Zoom Air will look to operate on maximum routes in the North East, both within and outside the purview of the RCS.

“We are looking at connecting Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and other states in the region with Kolkata and Guwahati as hubs,” Dhar said.

The airline is also looking to start international operations connecting the region with neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, he added.

Zoom Air will add 4 Bombardier CRJ-900, 94-seater air planes, from November 2018, Dhar added. The airline also plans to purchase sea planes and fly them under the RCS.

“We are currently looking at geographies like West Bengal, Assam and Orissa for operating sea planes,” Dhar said, adding the airline could purchase its first sea plane as early as October.

India's Zoom Air to lease a CRJ-200

20APR2018

Zoom Air has signed an agreement with fellow Indian operator Club One Air for the dry-lease of a CRJ-200. According to a press release, the aircraft will be deployed on Zoom Air's UDAN flights in India's northeast.

"We believe this agreement will play an important role in promoting the prime minister's ambitious regional air connectivity scheme, UDAN," Rajan Mehra, chief executive officer, Club One Air, said.

Zoom Air currently operates three CRJ-200s of which two are dry-leased from Magpie Aviation Leasing while the other is dry-leased from Regional One. It runs regular flights between Delhi Int'l, Jabalpur, Kolkata Int'l, and Tezpur.

Zoom Air looking to spread its wings to B’desh, Myanmar

April 29, 2018

Zoom Air is looking to fly to nearby international destinations like Yangon and Chittagong, from Kolkata, a top official of the airline has said.

Last week, Zoom Air launched daily flights between Kolkata and Tezpur in Assam, under the Centre”s regional connectivity scheme (RCS).

“We are planning to operate flights to international destinations such as Yangon and Chittagong from Kolkata. These destinations are likely to be connected with one or two destinations in the North East,” CEO cum MD of Zoom Air, Koustav M Dhar told PTI.

“We will be able to introduce international flights from Kolkata, because from now on, we will park two aircraft in the city at night,” Dhar said.

At present, only one aircraft is parked at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA) in Kolkata at night, and very soon the airline is going to park its new, the fifth aircraft, in Kolkata as well, he said.

“The routes on the international sectors are yet to be finalised. The options are Kolkata to Yangon via Guwahati and Kolkata to Chittagong via Guwahati. We are looking at these routes since there is a demand,” Dhar said.

Dhar also said that the airline is planning to start flights between Mumbai and Delhi with a stopover in Durgapur.

“We are planning to start flight operations to Durgapur and the route will be Delhi to Mumbai via Durgapur.

The Delhi-Durgapur-Mumbai flights are expected to start from August this year,” Dhar said.

Zoom Air had started flights to Durgapur in February 2017 but withdrew from it in August 2017 citing bird hit in one of its aircraft.

At that time, the flight was being operated between Delhi and Kolkata via Durgapur, Dhar explained.

He also said that a late night flight between Delhi and Kolkata is also on the cards.

“The Delhi”Kolkata”Delhi flight will not be under the RCS scheme. It will leave Delhi at midnight and reach Kolkata after two hours approximately,” Dhar said.

Zoom Air is a full service carrier.

The airline at present has five 50-seater Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ200) long range (LR) aircraft.

Zoom Air grounded for safety reasons

29.09.2018

Zoom Air (India) (ZOM, Delhi Int'l) has been grounded for the last two months as the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended the carrier's operating licence due to concerns about its safety management systems, Business Standard correspondent Arindam Majumder has reported on his social media profile.

The regional carrier's financial backer Jaideep Mirchandani is also reportedly hesitant to continue pumping money into the venture, discouraged by the poor results of flights operated under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS or UDAN).

Zoom Air was hit by the poorly executed government's strategy to develop regional flights in India, as the state assigned routes and encouraged start-ups to enter the market, but failed to ensure enough slots were available at busy airports. Smaller airports were also often not prepared for year-round operations due to the lack of navigational aids. In addition, lengthy bureaucratic procedures have burdened start-ups which were not required to have enough launch capital.

This all led to a high rate of cancellations, poor load factors, and operational challenges which led to losses despite the waiver of airport fees and government's subsidies for 50% of the available tickets.

According to the ch-aviation

Zoom Air to resume operations in early 1Q19

02.01.2019

Zoom Air plans to resume operations on January 15, 2019, after its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) was renewed by the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Financial Express has reported.

"We will start operations from January 15 on the Kolkata Int'l-Tezpur sector which is an UDAN route," CEO Koustav Dhar said.

The carrier is also talking to new prospective investors about a INR1 billion rupee (USD14.3 million) capital injection. If successful, the new funds could become available to the regional specialist in mid-January.

"We plan to add five CRJ-900 aircraft after the new set of investors coming on board," Dhar said.

The carrier has been dormant since July 2018 after its AOC had been suspended due to operational and safety concerns. The DGCA renewed the licence at the end of December 2018.

Prior to its grounding, Zoom Air deployed four CRJ-200ERs on the government-co-funded UDAN flights mostly in India's North-East. It is understood that the airline plans to remain focussed on the same area after the restart.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/114170-indias-zoom-air-faces-insolvency-proceedings

Zoom Air faces insolvency proceedings

04.04.2022

Insolvency proceedings have been initiated against Zexus Air Services P. Ltd., the company which operates the Zoom Air (India) (ZOM, Delhi Int'l) regional airline brand, according to a regulatory notice filed in India's National Company Law Tribunal in New Delhi.

According to the notice to creditors filed on March 26, 2022, by administrator Aashish Gupta, the Tribunal – a quasi-judicial authority that deals with the winding up of Indian companies – "ordered the commencement of a corporate insolvency resolution process against Zexus Air Services Private Limited on March 25, 2022".

Creditors are asked to submit their claims, with proof, on or before April 8, 2022.

The public announcement by the tribunal names one Captain Samuel Tarig Omer Ahmad as the applicant in the insolvency application. Hindu Business Line reported Ahmad is an expatriate pilot associated with the regional airline.

The estimated date of closure of the insolvency resolution process is set as September 21, 2022 – 180 days from the commencement date.

Zoom Air Chief Executive Officer Koustav Dhar did not respond to a request for comment.

Zexus Air Services P. Ltd. was incorporated in New Delhi on April 22, 2013, by Surender Kumar Kaushik. The Indian Civil Aviation Ministry issued it a No Objection Certificate in 2014. In September 2016, the airline took delivery of its first aircraft, a CRJ200ER. The airline received its Air Operator's Certificate on February 3, 2017, and began operations on February 15, 2017. As of March 2017, it flew to seven destinations in India using two CRJ200ERs.

In July 2018, India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended the airline's license citing safety concerns but renewed the license at the end of December 2018.

The carrier restarted in late October 2019, initially on the Delhi Int'l-Agra-Bikaner route, but subsequently suspended all flights in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It had planned to restart in December 2020 with four CRJ200ERs, but this never transpired.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, all four of Zoom Air's CRJ200ERs are currently stored in India (Amritsar and New Delhi). Two are leased from Magpie Aviation Leasing and two from Regional One.

One more regional airline is biting the dust.

This time I dont blame the airline but the creditors who lent credit. They already know airline is a high risk business and most of the startups (or even established ones) fail in India.

As far as employee salaries, GoI should establish an independent escrow fund for any airline startup, atleast for the first few years, which the airline funds in advance (more like a rent deposit) so that the employees get paid.

Zooom Airlines plans to return to Indian skies after regulator renews certification

Sept 16, 2023

Gurugram-based Zooom Airlines (earlier spelled as Zoom) Air, which has not flown since the emergence of the pandemic in 2020 may soon take to skies again.

A brand under Zexus Air Services, the airline on Friday (September 15) announced the renewal of its air operator certificate by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA). The AOC is a crucial and mandatory document for an air carrier to launch its air services.
"Zooom Airlines has received the official clearance for commercial passenger operations in India. It has received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the DGCA," the airline said.
