Lufthansa ends Pune service in early-July 2018

Lufthansa earlier this month ended service to Pune, as the Star Alliance member operated last Frankfurt – Pune service (inbound via Bucharest as technical stop) on 01JUL18.
This route was previously operated by Privatair Boeing 737-700BBJ aircraft, 6 times a week.

LH768 FRA1235 – 0030+1PNQ 73W x2
LH769 PNQ0155 – 0650OTP0720 – 0845FRA 73W x3

Despite schedule listing displaying service operating from 28OCT18, reservations on/after 28OCT18 is no longer available.

Just wondering if the LH's A321 can replace the PrivatAir BBJ on this route. Its clearly doing well and bringing in money.

On a side note, would FRA-PNQ be doable on an A321LR without the tech stop at OTP??

It would be doable on LH's A320NEO, with a tech stop at OTP.

The only reason for the stoppage that I can think of (other than PrivatAir going bust) is that the route wasn't making as much money as LH would have liked.

It may be because they originally had it at 3 to 4 times a week, but now the service is 6 times a week, may be they should go back to 3 to 4 times/week with A320 NEO aircraft.

With BOM so close, PNQ market is small especially with the fares being so high, not many book this flight. I know many who go to PNQ, still go through BOM.

Lufthansa’s Crazy 11 Hour A319 Flight From Frankfurt to Pune, India

September 23, 2018

Passengers will be flying on an Airbus A319. Originally Lufthansa offered this route with their partner PrivatAir, from Germany to India. They flew a Boeing 737-700, which is rather small, still had the ability to create a monopoly on the route.

They since ended their partnership and have been looking for a new airline to partner with, and under pressure from large German firms that want direct flights, have resumed the service themselves.

The only problem is that the airport in Pune (PNQ) does not have a long enough runway to support widebody aircraft, so any planes inbound must be only lighter single aisle narrow body.

The new route will be 11 hours and 25 minutes long and is 4159 miles / 6693 kilometres / 3614 nautical miles. As we mentioned the new route will be flown on an A319, (with a range of 3,750 nmi or 6,950 km) thus the plane has to stop in Baku, Azerbaijani (GYD), and passengers will not be given the opportunity to disembark. Historically, the PrivatAir flight did fuel stops and crew changes at Bucharest, Romania (OTP).

The plane will feature business class and economy class. The business class will not have lie-flat seats (The plane is configured for short flights), there is no in-flight entertainment on board (apart from other passengers going crazy) and the economy seats are razor thin with no padding.

Here are the flight details from Onemileatatime:

LH768 Frankfurt to Baku departing 10:30AM arriving 6:05PM
LH768 Baku to Pune departing 6:50PM arriving 12:50AM (+1 day)

LH769 Pune to Baku departing 2:10AM arriving 6:10AM
LH769 Baku to Frankfurt departing 6:55AM arriving 9:15AM

According to the press release, the flight will operate with a ‘reduced seat capacity’, allocating room for the crew to rest and an additional flight team to carry on the journey.

It is possibly the same A319 that they use on their intra-European, central Asian and North African routes

The so-called business class will be the Euro business- the same 3x3 Y class layout but with the middle seat unoccupied.

What a massive downgrade, compared to PrivatAir's 737s! LH may as well do away with it altogether and re-introduce the A350 to BOM.

Lufthansa resumes Privatair 737 service to Pune from Feb 2019

Lufthansa in recent schedule update once again revised planned service to Pune in winter 2018/19 season. From 01FEB19 to 30MAR19, schedule and inventory listing shows the Star Alliance carrier using leased Privatair Boeing 737-700 aircraft, operating Frankfurt – Pune – Bucharest – Frankfurt routing 6 times a week, replacing planned 4 weekly Frankfurt – Baku – Pune on board A319.

LH768 FRA1150 – 0040+1PNQ 73W x2
LH769 PNQ0210 – 0635OTP0705 – 0845FRA 73W x3

Bucharest is a technical stop. Flights on/after 31MAR19 (the launch of summer 2019 season) remains not available for reservation.

I guess it is the best of both worlds now - PrivatAir is back in PNQ, and the A350 is returning to BOM Smile

Flight to Frankfurt hits air pocket

Dec 7, 2018

PrivatAir, the long-standing partner of German airline Lufthansa, filed for insolvency a couple of days ago, casting a shadow on the operations of the Pune-Frankfurt flight from February.

PrivatAir, a Swiss company, was to operate its aircraft on the route from February. Lufthansa is currently operating its own plane from Pune to Frankfurt.

The German airline in a statement said, “Lufthansa has taken note of the insolvency of its long-standing partner, PrivatAir, filed on December 5, with great regret. It has no direct operational impact on Lufthansa. In summer 2018, Lufthansa had decided to suspend the cooperation with PrivatAir for operational and commercial reasons until further notice. In the meantime, Lufthansa will fly to Pune from November 1 to January 31 next year as an interim solution with its own aircraft.”

Lufthansa had a wet lease agreement with PrivatAir.

A source told TOI that Lufthansa was reviewing the next steps for its operations from Pune. The flights published with PrivatAir will not be bookable from February until further notice. But those who have already booked tickets for the flight in February are in quandary.

“I have booked a ticket for Frankfurt for February 10 next year. What happens to that now? Will Lufthansa continue to fly its own aircraft as it is doing now or will be cancelled?” a flyer said.

The airline didn’t respond to a query in this regard.
