|
|
BOM saw a total of 47,204,259 pax with a growth rate of only 5.6% over 2016 numbers. International growth rates were a healthy 9.1%, but growth domestically was only about 4.4% (I think traffic was kept artificially low over the summer and fall due to airport repair work).
DEL saw 63,451,503 pax with an overall growth rate of 14.1% over 2016. International traffic hit almost 17 million. BOM, by comparison, was about 13.33 million.
Domestically, DEL had over 1 million pax more per month than BOM. |

Is that enough to put Delhi in the top 15 airports in the world?
If DEL can maintain this growth rate in 2018, it should be enough to catapult it to 70 million pax in 2018 and top 10 busiest airports in the world! |

It will jump to the 15th or 16th position in 2017 just behind Frankfurt and possibly Istanbul, surpassing Singapore, Bangkok, and Seoul. |

BOM traffic cannot increase much due to the single runway restrictions and slot issues during the day hours. The new airport, if built, should be able to help. |

I think airlines need to start up gauging in BOM. Does Indigo and Spicejet even have bigger frames like A321 or 739?
Would BOM beat DEL if you only looked at O&D traffic? |

I doubt if BOM would DEL on O & D, even BOM handles transit traffic and the difference between BOM and DEL is now too large. |

I don't think BOM would beat DEL even if you looked at only O&D.
DEL not only serves the city of Delhi but also several north and east Indian states. People even from as far as CCU and the Northeast prefer flying through DEL when travelling internationally.
BOM on the other hand has seen a gradual erosion in its catchment area ever since the South and the West became infested with good quality airports, with the ME3/South East Asia majors providing direct flights to their hubs. Now not many people find the need to go via BOM.
And then there is the domestic O&D traffic. Even BOM falls behind in this. One reason is that Mumbai is well served by many high speed trains and many people may prefer travelling in the AC coaches for one night journeys.
Delhi too is well served by trains, you will argue, but you don't ever want to travel on Northern Railway unless you have a death wish. Even the AC coaches are shambolic, with loutish, ticketless dudes forcing their way in. So most people who can afford a LCC ticket and wish to travel with some dignity will travel to DEL by air. This results in greater passenger numbers in DEL. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

considering BOM just got its terminal revamped, is there still some hope of new airport? Can both airports co-exist like JFK/EWR, as current one's location is too convenient.
