IAF looks to buy fifth-generation F-35 fighter

February 15, 2018

It is learnt the IAF wants to procure 126 of the variant called F-35A - the air force version of the fighter that incorporates "conventional take-off and landing".

In what would be a huge capability jump, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is increasingly interested in procuring the American F-35 Lightning II for its depleting fighter fleet. Business Standard learns the IAF top brass is formally requesting for a classified briefing by the F-35’s prime builder, Lockheed Martin, on the capabilities of the sophisticated, fifth-generation fighter developed under the US Joint Strike Fighter programme.

The US government has not formally offered the F-35 to India.

Indian Air Force Denies Interest in American F-35 Fighter Jets

02.03.2018

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has refuted media reports which claimed that the force was keen on procuring the F-35 fighter jet from American firm Lockheed Martin.

"We have not officially asked for a briefing on the F-35 nor has any request been made to the Americans," Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa told The Indian Express.

On February 15 of this year, Indian daily, the Business Standard had published a report which claimed that the IAF had formally requested a classified briefing by the F-35's prime builder, Lockheed Martin to procure 126 of the variant called F-35A — the air force version of the fighter which incorporates "conventional take-off and landing," or CTOL.
