Is there ANY traffic between these two cities? Or is this some hub for AK?

Johor Bahru is only 30 kms by road causeway from Singapore. It may well be cheaper for Kolkattans to get to Singapore tht way. That could be the reason.

MAA may have more traffic to John Bahru than CCU. CCU already has several flights to SIN, so not sure about this route.

And for Indians, there is a visa exemption for Malaysia only if coming from SIN, but not directly going to Malaysia. With the extra burden of getting a visa to Malaysia (unless they have some work/visit in Johor Bahru), it is not worth getting to SIN via Johor Bahru.
