GoAir begins operating fuel-efficient A320 neo

Jun 9, 2016

GoAir has put into operations its first fuel-efficient Airbus A320 neo plane, which it had inducted in the fleet last week, with the inaugural flight landing at city's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here from New Delhi, the airline said today.

The first A320 neo (new engine option) flight of GoAir, G8-336, arrived from New Delhi's Indira Gandhi international Airport at 16.20 hours on Wednesday, it said.

The arriving passengers were welcomed by the GoAir Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Prock-Schauer along with senior officials from the European aircraft maker Airbus, engine maker Pratt & Whitney, GoAir said.

With the induction of the first of our 72 neo aircraft on order, GoAir has reached a fleet strength of 20 aircraft, Prock-Schauer said adding "With this expansion, we will be able to strengthen our domestic network and will also be available to fly on international routes."

The Mumbai-based airline had, in June 2011, placed order for 72 new A320 neo aircraft, valued at about Rs 32,400 crore on list price, with the European aviation major Airbus.

GoAir, which commands 8.5 per cent market share in domestic traffic, plans to induct as many as eight A320neo planes, of the 72 on order, in the fleet by March next year.

GoAir is also the first airline to use this aircraft in Spaceflex configuration with 186 seats enabling better service and availability during peak seasons, without compromising on the comfort of the traveller, it said.

The airline in a gesture towards conserving water in the face of the drought and severe water shortage in parts of the country, decided not to accept the customary water canon salute to the new flight on its landing at Mumbai airport.

Globally, when an airline starts its operations to a particular airport or flies a new aircraft, a water canon welcome is given from two fire tenders when the plane lands at the destination airport.

The new A320neo incorporates a host of innovations, including latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing-tip devices, which provide for 15 percent saving of the fuel from day one and 20 per cent by 2020. This is equivalent to a reduction of 5,000 tonnes of CO2 per aircraft per year, it added.

India’s GoAir shows intent to fly to Europe

June 12, 2016

GoAir, which recently became eligible to fly overseas with the induction of 20th aircraft in its fleet, may become the first Indian budget airline to take wings to Europe, subject to government nod.

GoAir has expressed its intent to fly abroad from next year and indicated Europe among several other regions in this regard, a top Civil Aviation Ministry official has said.

Among the four low-cost airlines — SpiceJet, IndiGo, GoAir and AirAsia India operating in the country, only the first two currently fly international with operations to the Gulf, Southeast Asia and SAARC regions.

“GoAir has expressed its intent to fly overseas from next calendar year. It has indicated some regions,” Civil Aviation Secretary R N Choubey said, adding that Gulf and Europe were some regions that the Mumbai-based carrier was looking at.

However, the airline “has not yet submitted a formal plan in this regard,” he said.

When pointed out that the airline does not have the type of aircraft for the long-haul operations, Choubey said they could be considering “hopping flights”.

Flights of over seven hours are considered long-haul and are generally operated by twin-aisled wide-body aircraft, whereas GoAir’s fleet comprises of 20 narrow-body, single- aisle Airbus A-320s. It has 71 more of the same type of aircraft on order.

Recently during the induction of its 20th aircraft and the first of the 72 A320 neo (new engine option), GoAir Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Prock-Schauer had said “with this expansion, we will be able to strengthen our domestic network and will also be available to fly on international routes.”

GoAir had started operations in November 2005. Despite more than 10 years in operations, the airline was not qualified to fly overseas as it did not have 20 aircraft in the fleet under the 5/20 rule, under which only those airlines having five years of operational experience and a minimum of 20 aircraft are allowed to fly overseas.

“GoAir can operate Europe with an Airbus A-320, but with a reduced seating capacity. Since Gulf is too close, it will not be possible for the airline to have a stop either at Dubai or Muscat,” an aviation expert said.

German carrier Lufthansa currently flies an all-business class A-320 plane to Pune from Frankfurt with only 48 seats as against a maximum seating capacity of 180.

“If it has to operate an A320 for long-haul, the airline will have to reduce the capacity of its aircraft by more two- thirds and could fly as all-business class,” the expert said. GoAir’s latest A-320 neo has a capacity of 186 seats.

That is not true, GoAir (if ever) can fly via KWI to many points in Europe, may even to UK. Copa flies from Panama City to southern S. America, which have same or greater distances, similar to Kuwait to Western portion of Europe.

I don't know why GoAir is even fooling around with Europe, they should first fly to nearby regions, may be they could try Nairobi, where only Kenyan Air flies.

They also have one of the best in charge, Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, who contributed in no small means to Jet Airway's good times. He knows his onions, and knows the region and its dynamics, quite well.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Airbus Said Close to $7.5 Billion A320neo Deal From GoAir

July 10, 2016

Airbus Group SE is in discussions with Go Airlines India Pvt. about the purchase of about 70 A320neo planes worth around $7.5 billion at list prices, according to people familiar with the situation.

An announcement could come as early as this week at the Farnborough Air Show in England, though talks may extend further into the year, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are ongoing.

GoAir is one of only three carriers that have begun operating the revamped Neo version of Airbus’s single-aisle jet, so that a follow-on order would provide a vote of confidence in a model that’s been dogged by issues with its Pratt & Whitney turbines since last year.

The Indian carrier already has a contract for 72 A320neos, two of which have been delivered, after announcing a deal for the jets in 2011.

The new batch would again use Pratt engines, rather than a competing powerplant from CFM International alliance of General Electric Co. and Safran SA, according to the people.

Iran, Uzbekistan: GoAir rushes in where other Indian carriers fear to tread

July, 11, 2016

GoAir, which is about to become the fourth private airline from the country to operate overseas flights has chosen to start with Iran, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkey, countries to which no Indian carrier flies because they are not popular tourist hubs.

The Wadia group-owned budget airline, which has sought government approval for the purpose, is likely to start international services to 14 countries by early next year.

These will also include China, Thailand, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Oman, Qatar and the UAE.

The Mumbai-based carrier wants to begin international operations from the next summer schedule. Flying rights are granted by the government twice a year—for the summer and winter schedules.

The summer schedule begins from the last Sunday of March and extends up to the last Saturday of October.

“We are requesting to be designated to fly to the countries mentioned on a scheduled basis during the summer schedule 2017. Extensive evaluations have been conducted to arrive at a phase-wise plan for implementation,” GoAir chief executive officer Wolfgang Prock-Schauer wrote to the ministry.

“We require allocations for proper planning and hence, we request the ministry for early approval,” the letter said.

GoAir submitted a detailed plan to the aviation ministry on June 23, a copy of which is available with HT.

The airline did not respond to HT’s requests for comments for the story.

I have a positive feel about what they are doing. And I am pretty sure they'll be able to fill up their A320s. If they are successful in making money on these route, it will be a turning point in Indian aviation, with airlines thinking out of the box. No more lalaji flights to DXB/SIN/HKG.

GoAir signs $7.7 bln deal with Airbus for 72 A320neos

12th Jul 2016

GoAir, India's fifth-biggest carrier by passengers travelled, announced on Tuesday a preliminary agreement with European planemaker Airbus to buy 72 A320neos in a deal worth about $7.7 billion at current list prices.

The deal will help continue GoAir's growth, the airline said in a statement, and built on its existing order for 72 of the same aircraft which it made in 2011.

"The new aircraft will help us in unlocking new domestic routes while providing a springboard for continued international network expansion in the years to come,"

GoAir gets nod to fly to 9 nations

Aug 16

GoAir has received government's approval to fly to nine countries including Iran, Uzbekistan and Kazakhastan, with the Wadia group airline now expecting to take to international skies early next year.

The approval for the Mumbai-based carrier which has been operating for over a decade, comes more than two months after the Government eased the overseas flying norms for Indian airlines.

The airline has received approval to operate flights to nine countries, including Iran, China, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Kazakhastan, Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia, a senior official said.

"We have got approval to fly to nine countries. We expect to start international operations from the next summer schedule," GoAir Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Prock-Schauer told PTI.

Generally, the summer schedule commences from the last Sunday of March and extends to the last Saturday of October every year.

GoAir would be the first Indian private carrier to fly to any CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States). CIS countries for which the carrier has got flying nod include Uzbekistan, Kazakhastan and Azerbaijan.

Currently under the air service agreements, Indian carriers can operate 31 weekly services to Iran, seven to Azerbaijan, Kazakhastan (21), Uzbekistan (18 ) and China (42).

In case of Vietnam, Indian airlines are allowed to operate 28 weekly services and permitted unlimited operations from 18 select tourist destinations in India.

Under the bilaterals, the quota for seats and services are equal for airlines of the two countries concerned.

GoAir currently has a fleet of 21 Airbus aircraft including two fuel-efficient A320 neos. It is the lone one among the established players that is yet to start overseas flights. Its peers --IndiGo and SpiceJet -- already operate international flights.

http://www.azernews.az/business/100960.html

The Mumbai-based airline has got an admission for carrying out scheduled passenger flights to Azerbaijan, Iran, China, Vietnam, the Maldives, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia from March 2017.

GoAir received permission to make regular passenger flights from Mumbai or Delhi to Baku with a frequency of three times a week, according to the report.

On Thursday, GoAir announced Hyderabad as 23rd destination on its network, connecting it with several cities on the east coast, including Kolkata, beside a flight to Port Blair from here via Bengaluru on Thursday.

Stating Hyderabad was a missing link in their southern network, the CEO said they'd be focusing more on the expansion of domestic operations, as the airline still served only 23 of the 40 top destinations in India.

On international operations, to begin with the summer schedule (June 2017), he said GoAir was allocated traffic rights to all the major neighbouring or nearby countries within the range of an A-320 aircraft (six hours).

These included China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Vietnam. The CEO said the same A-320 aircraft would be used for international flights, as he firmly believed in a one aircraft, one fleet principle.

The 186 seater A-320 is a big aircraft; they'd consider the slightly bigger 230-seater A-321 if necessary, he said.

This is interesting. While W P-S's initial moves were that of consolidation, there were sure but firm small strides, and now, here comes a major one. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Go Air, which was planning Tehran as one of its initial overseas destinations, has stalled those plans for now. The airline plans to start international flights later this year.

New snags emerge with GTF-powered A320neos in India

01 March, 2017

India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation is undertaking extensive examinations of the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan engines on Airbus A320neos operated by GoAir and IndiGo, following the emergence of new issues with the engine.

Sources at GoAir have confirmed to FlightGlobal that its fleet of five A320neos are under extra scrutiny from the regulator following an inflight engine shutdown of one of the aircraft on 8 February, which forced the crew on a Delhi-Bengaluru flight to return to the Indian capital.

The engines are being subject to borescope examinations by the DGCA, while the airline is checking the engine's fan blades each night.

Some of the A320neos have also displayed “3 bearing warning” indication on the electronic centralised aircraft monitor (ECAM), which has has been traced back to a problem with the bearing component manufacturer.

"There is a fear now that these specific kinds of failures will have an impact on operations,” says the source.

Local media reports indicate that 16 A320neos operated by IndiGo are also undergoing examinations. The aircraft under inspection have flown for at least 1,000 hours.

IndiGo did not comment when approached by FlightGlobal.

In a statement to FlightGlobal, P&W says that it is supporting GoAir and IndiGo “to assess the situation and minimise any disruption”. However, the engine maker adds that the issues “are still under review so it would be premature to speculate on the cause(s)”.

"We are working closely with our customers and our suppliers in order to address and resolve these issues quickly," it adds.

India's GoAir postpones intl launch over A320neo delays

GoAir (G8, Mumbai Int'l) has decided to postpone the launch of its international operations, due to delays in the delivery of its A320neos. The Business Standard reports that international flights will not launch before winter 2017/18.

GoAir has so far taken delivery of five A320neos out of a firm order of 144 of the type. Deliveries have been delayed due to known problems with the neo's Pratt & Whitney PW1100G powerplants.

CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer told The Business Standard that GoAir is now a few months behind its schedule. "The second half of the year will lead to normalisation of our original plan," Prock-Schauer said. "We are quite confident of the measures taken by the manufacturer to rectify the faults. Hopefully, after it becomes normal, we can pick up according to our original plan of expansion."

In mid-2016, the Indian low cost carrier was awarded international traffic rights to Tehran Imam Khomeini, Guangzhou, Kunming Changshui, Ho Chi Minh City, Malé, Baku, Tashkent Yuzhny, Doha Hamad Int'l, and Dammam (Saudi-Arabia).

Domestically, GoAir is increasing its capacity by operating more frequent flights. Prock aims to increase the number of flights by 20% this year, up to 205 daily flights across its network of 23 destinations.

GoAir to partner regional airline for Udan scheme

Jun 23 2017

GoAir plans to fly on regional routes under the government’s regional connectivity scheme and is exploring a partnership with a regional airline for it, Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, managing director and chief executive said in an interview on Thursday.

The Mumbai-based low-cost airline also plans to acquire 13 A320neos taking the total number of planes to 37 by the turn of the current fiscal. It’s also set to commence international operations by year end. The plans to fly overseas, Prock-Schauer said, have been delayed by eight months due to the delay in delivery of aircraft by Airbus SAS. To some extent, it has also held back the firm from going for an initial public offering, he said.

Prock-Schauer said though the regional connectivity scheme has potential, GoAir will not buy smaller aircraft to serve the regional routes and will remain steadfast to its existing business model. “We wouldn’t want to take any risk. I want to stick to the business model, do what we can with the A320neos,” he said, pointing out that there are some regions, though limited in number, that can be served with A320s. Meanwhile, GoAir has also held preliminary discussions to team up with a regional airline, he added.

GoAir’s strategy of serving regional routes with A320, is different from the strategy of its low-fare rivals Spice Jet Ltd and InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. Both plan to acquire smaller planes for addressing the regional routes.

GoAir's international expansion plans have been pushed back because of a delay in the deliveries of the Airbus A320Neo planes, which have been facing glitches with engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney. The airline has received 5 of the 144 ordered planes.

Deliveries are running 8 months behind schedule, said Prock-Schauer. But he said the engine-maker is sorting issues and deliveries should stabilise soon. The airline aims to get deliveries of 13 more planes by March, in which case it will file for government approvals to start overseas flights in the upcoming winter schedule.

GoAir plans initially fly to Ghuanzhou in China and Tehran, Iran. Next up would be Middle Eastern destinations such as Doha and Bahrain. Also on the list are Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and even Europe.

GoAir may convert some of its Airbus neo planes into A321s

June 22, 2017

GoAir is likely to convert some of its Airbus A320 neo planes, which are on order, into Airbus 321s amidst its plans to launch international operations by this winter schedule. “There is a possibility (of converting some of the A320 neos into A321s), but a decision is yet to be arrived at,” GoAir Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Prock-Schauer said. The Nusli Wadia-promoted no-frills airline has placed order for 144 A320 neo (new engine option) planes with the European aviation major Airbus in two tranches. “That is a possibility. We see quite a big asset in this aircraft…we can go for a bigger version, that is something we are looking at. But we have not taken a decision,” Prock-Schauer said
