After 16 years, KLM to return to Mumbai
May 15, 2017
KLM is resuming Amsterdam-Mumbai service after 16 years with a thrice weekly flight beginning from October 29.
KLM (part of the Air France-KLM group) will deploy a 294-seat Boeing 787-9 aircraft on the route and the new service will enable Air France-KLM to catch up with Lufthansa that is now the biggest European airline flying to India.
In a statement KLM CEO Pieter Elbers said with the addition of the new flight there would be 31 direct flights between India and the Netherlands each week. “KLM’s network presence in India has grown enormously since we began our strategic cooperation with Jet Airways,” he said. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

I do not understand why KLM is adding capacity like this, when there is a daily 777 on 9W metal. And anyways 9W is as good as being in SKyteam alliance.
Yields will unnecessarily come down and is not good for both carriers _________________ http://airliners1.com

Will this be an evening departure ex-AMS and early morning from BOM? |

According to this Dutch newspaper report (in Dutch), it will be an afternoon flight from AMS and very early morning timing from BOM, 3 days a week. I have generally avoided flights which land in India after midnight.
From the report it is effective from October 29, 2017 on 787-9:
1300-0155 AMS-BOM
0400-0845 BOM-AMS
on Monday, Thursday and Sunday from AMS and next day from BOM.

The timings are horrible for arrival and departure from BOM and it is only 3 days a week. |

Let's hope this is a late afternoon departure or an evening flight from AMS. They have flights from SFO landing at noon and SLC at 2:30pm. They also have a late JFK flight that arrives at 11:30am. If they did a 4pm departure for a 4:15 am arrival into BOM, that would give more options and add value. I think a 8am departure from BOM would be civilized (but don't know if you can keep the plane there for 4 hours). Or do a 9pm departure form AMS
Ok just saw the post with the timings - Why 1pm? It doesn't open up more options. Its like KL just wants more cheap seats to India helping to fill their late flights out of the east coast. The 4am departure is horrible. So now AF/KL/9W have 4 flights BOM-Europe at the SAME times. Add 9W and VS also at the same time (so 5 flights to EU and US leaving around the same time). WTF...
So what do people think is driving this? I am shocked given 9W 777 on AMS-BOM. Can traffic really be that strong from India since the 9W/DL/AF/KL partnership? Pax want timing options NOT connecting airport options. |

From my hometown (Zagreb in Croatia) there is flight ZAG-AMS arriving in AMS 10:30 a.m. with only 50 minutes layover in AMS to catch Jet airways 231 flight which is somewhat risky. Now this will be 2,5 hours.
On the way back BOM-AMS-ZAG Jet airways timing is just fine. _________________ Zagreb airport (ZAG) |

Airlines are profit making enterprises. I'm sure they've done the math and determined that these timings work for the market(s) they serve. Even in the dense NYC-LON market, you have multiple flights from the same carriers (or their partners) departing at nearly the same times. |
