With plans of US expansion, AI to induct wide-bodied Boeing

Mon, 3 Apr 2017

The Air India board has approved a proposal seeking to induct the wide-bodied Boeing 787-9 aircraft in the fleet as it plans to expand operations to the US besides launching services to Canada.

Air India will lease seven B787-900 planes, the higher range of B787-8 aircraft, for which the Board has given its go-ahead, Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani said.

"The board's approval for leasing of seven B787-900 planes has come by," Lohani told PTI.

This is great. Now will AI please upgrade their J seat to aisle access? Also I think AI should launch a premium Econ class not these planes to have J/Y+/Y. Also two or three rows of extra leg room for Star Golds and paid is a must.

Btw could a 789 do DEL-SFO and DEL-IAH without payload restrictions. Also what ever happened to AI taking out First on their 77L and will they upgrade their J seat

A pleasant surprise, since AI Engineering were initially dead against the B789 Dream)liner, with its commonality with the B788 being not that much, and the B789 being a rather new aircraft. My guess is that discussions with UA Engineering may have turned the decision, as well as the current economics, and expansion plans. AI is looking to enter the NA market gradually, with the ME3 being put back by the large electronic personal item ban. the UA code-shares should be in place this summer, if all goes well. This will benefit both UA and AI alike.

AI may stick to conservative ideas here. There are some indications to this effect, but as in most things AI, this may go either way.

Cabin reconfig on the B77L, along with some interior+IFE repairs are urgently required. However, I doubt if the B77Ls will be taken out of service long enough for a deep refit, unless a heavy check comes close, or the birds go in for some deep service before IAD comes on the line. Let us wait and watch.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Good decision to go for the 789 but its coming a bit too late!

They must act fast and pick up or wet-lease some aircraft and start routes faster.. by the time the new 789s come.. Trump may cancell the ban.. who knows!

They need a serious renewal of their tired J product on both the 777 and 787.

This may be a good time, but then AI is notorious for doing nothing.

True. The seats look like 20 year old already

Either way, I do not see any change coming soon, from what I know. At best, we should be looking at a B77L reconfig on a heavy check, as and when the next one takes place. The second thing to look forward to, is a wide-ranging list of UA code-shares, scheduled for sometime this summer.
Cheers, Sumantra.

On the 787 their seats at least are in use by many airlines. The 777 need to be changed to a high dense lie flat like Swiss. They can change the seat covers and do a deep clean without taking out of service for too long. If they do, AI should really think of more muted seat colors. Being Indian is one thing, bucking design trends and getting loads of negative feedback is another.

And that's one reason why I won't bother flying them. Between a tired 77W on an IAD-DEL-BOM routing, or AC's new 789 DCA-YYZ-BOM, I'll take the latter any day. Especially since the latter are about $1100 cheaper.

Not to nitpick Sanjay, but the DCA-YYZ leg will always be a JungleJet route, you'll get the B789 Dream)liner on the YYZ-BOM route. I guess you will fly J, so the food on AC should not be that bad.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Not to nitpick Sumantra, the DEL-BOM leg wont be a widebody service either cause AI 104 gets in at 10.30 am. Also the short 1 hour hop is I guess never a deterrent while making decisions on long haul flights. With that being said, if AI really wants to step up its game, the premium cabins (particularly on the 777s) need a major upgrade.

He he...good one Wink

Indeed. Plus, for IAD, most of the traffic is centred arond DEL, so an international connector for the BOM-DEL route around mid-day may not be on the cards.

True, but as I wrote above, I doubt if that will happen anytime very soon. Even the more important B77L reconfig will possibly happen with a heavy check.
Cheers, Sumantra.
