Air India flight grounded in London after bird hit

23 March 2017

Air India on Thursday said its Ahmedabad-London-Newark flight was grounded in London after a bird hit the aircraft.

"AI-171 Ahmedabad-London-Newark flight was grounded due to bird hit incident yesterday (Wednesday). Due to this unfortunate incident, London Newark and Newark London flight is cancelled," Air India said in a statement.

"Due to the bird hit, the nose of the aircraft is damaged and also the radome. Flight is grounded in London and maintenance/repair work is going on," it added.

"Engineering department is hopeful that the aircraft will be ready for next schedule, that is, from London to Ahmedabad," it said.

For London-Newark passengers, alternative arrangement has been made, Air India stated.

Croatia Airlines & Air India Sign Codeshare Agreement

Croatia Airlines have announced that they have signed a codeshare agreement with Air India.

Croatia’s national carrier and India’s national carrier have entered into a codeshare agreement on the use of flight with shared codes of both carriers.

Croatia airlines have been Star Alliance member since 2004, whilst Air India joined in 2014.

The agreement, which will come into effect on 1 April 2017, allows for increased choice for the customers of both airlines.

Regardless of the operating carrier, passengers can fly a combination of Air India and Croatian Airlines services using the ticket and code of either of the two airlines.

According to the agreement, the Air India international code (AI) will be on Croatia Airlines flights from Frankfurt to Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split, From London to Zagreb and Split, From Vienna to Zagreb and Split, from Rome to Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split, and from Paris to Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split.

Alternatively, Croatia Airlines code (OU) will be on Air India flights from Frankfurt, London, Vienna, Rome and Paris to New Delhi, and from London to Mumbai.

“We are very pleased that we have signed a commercial agreement of a very high standard with Air India , which extends the existing cooperation in the transport of passengers. As part of the agreement, Croatia Airlines, as a European regional airline, gets the opportunity to stronger position itself in the large and fast-growing Indian market. I believe that passengers from Croatia and India will recognize the value of our joint product and have even better choice of travel,” said Croatia Airlines CEO Krešimir Kučko, Poslovni.hr reported.

Air India Express clears key safety audit, set for global tie-ups

Mar 27 2017

Air India Express on Monday said it has cleared a key global safety audit that will help it strike commercial agreements with international airlines.

The International Air Transport Association’s operational safety audit (IOSA) certification is valid for two years. IOSA standards are specified for systems, policies, processes and equipment, among others. International airlines mandate IOSA certification for any collaboration.

Air India Express chief executive officer (CEO) K. Shyam Sundar said in a statement that the recognition was testimony to the airline’s “hard work to conform to internationally accepted standards”.

For Washington (and also Philadelphia) area residents this is a great flight on both ends. On the return one can connect at DEL and arrive at a decent time in India or nearby countries.

Flight is long over due. That said, this flight benefits the DC metro area and not Phili. The EWR flight serves Phili just fine (my guess is the part of PHili in NJ would consider driving to EWR while those deep into PA would probably prefer a flight leaving Phili).

I wonder why they have the return so early in the am rather than match their schedule from ORD and JFK

Could it be to improve utilization of the aircraft. Maybe AI wants to fly the aircraft on another route during the 13-14 hours gap. Does anyone know if AI would look towards retiming JFK/ORD/EWR for similar reasons.

Alliance Air first off the blocks, to start Udan operations this month

Apr 03 2017

Mumbai: Air India Ltd’s Alliance Air subsidiary will be the first airline to take wing under the government’s subsidized Udan scheme.

The airline’s maiden flight will take off from Bhatinda in Punjab to Delhi later this month.

"We are looking to start operations from Bhatinda this month. It would be followed by Shimla and Indore. This should happen quickly. The rest should be operational by June,” said Subbiah.

Eyeing regional connectivity, Alliance Air plans to triple its fleet

Apr 2

Alliance Air, the regional arm of Air India, plans to triple its fleet this fiscal by inducting 20 more ATR aircraft amid an increased focus on enhancing connectivity to underserved and unserved airports.

Over the next two years, Alliance Air aims to expand its fleet to 50 ATR aeroplanes, Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani said.

"We will induct 10 ATR 72-600 planes in September. We plan to lease another 10 ATR aircraft within this financial year. In the following year, we hope to procure another 10 to 20 ATRs," he said.

The 10 new ATRs are being procured on lease for 12 years.

At present, the Air India subsidiary has a fleet of eight ATR 72-600 (70 seater) and two ATR 42-320 (48 seater) aircraft.

Air India is also procuring a new ATR 72-600 simulator, which will be operational in October, in order to train pilots for flying the new aircraft. This will replace the airbus A320 simulator at AI's Central Training Establishment in hyderabad.

Air India has proposed a host of international destinations for launch this year as part of its overseas expansion plans.

The national carrier is looking to launch one more destination in the US this year in addition to Washington DC, which will commence operations from July, Lohani said.

At present Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston are being exploredand air services to one of them could start later this year, he said.

Air India is also mulling launching flights to either Vancouver or Toronto in Canada from New Delhi going forward, according to Lohani.

Plans are also afoot to increase frequency to Australia and to look at routes in Africa by connecting Mumbai with Mauritius or Nairobi, he added.

The Air India CMD also said that flight services to the Danish capital Copenhagen are now likely to start from August instead of May.

Air India will also be commencing operations directly to Israel next month.

I am torn on which US city AI should launch. I guess IAH makes the most sense but can a 77W do IAH-DEL nonstop? DFW should be a no go as they are not OW. LAX could work for them but LA tends to have fewer recent Indian immigrants than IAH does (the LA crowd came in the 80s & 90s). Since AI does not serve DEL out of EWR, IAH would become the go to Star hub for the South and Texas to DEL. On Africa, I really think NBO-BOM should be flown by 9W - very frustrating that they can't launch a 737 nonstop like Kenya flies. AI should stick to the DEL hub. That said, if 9W just won't launch these flights because of EY, then AI should go for it.

Indeed, that is a front-runner. The numbers are also there.

It does, for quite a few months (at least), now. The flight is now DEL-BOM-EWR-BOM-DEL. The same famed AI 191/144 combo.

AI Dream)liner routes are on the anvil. Let us wait and watch. That may make 9W think twice. They will not be able to compete with KQ or AI with the Dream)liner's economics.

Air India to resume flight services to Shimla

April 5, 2017

Air India is all set to resume flight services to Shimla, almost five years after the carrier discontinued operations from the hill-locked aerodrome.

A test flight to start regular services, which will be operated by the Air India’s regional arm Alliance Air, has already been carried out and the airline is now awaiting a final nod from the aviation regulator, DGCA, a source close to the development said. The airline plans to deploy a 42-seater ATR plane to cater to the new destination, the source said.

Air India is keen to resume services to Shimla at the earliest and take the first mover advantage as the tourists flock to the Himachal Pradesh capital to beat the scorching heat of north India, the source said.

“Alliance Air has already conducted the mandatory trial run of the 42-seater ATR plane yesterday under the watch of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). We are now awaiting its go-ahead,” an airline source said.

Air India says operations unlikely on Delhi-Chandigarh-Shimla route, calls it commercially unviable

Apr 11, 2017

Flight operations to Shimla are unlikely to commence in the near future despite the airport being fully equipped and ready.

Government-owned Air India has expressed its inability to operate on Delhi-Chandigarh-Shiimla route because it was not commercially viable. Air India informed the Supreme Court that it needs partial funding from the state government since India’s flag carrier is already running into loses and “is thriving on equity infusion” from the Centre.

Appearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar Air India’s counsel said that in view of the topography of Himachal Pradesh ATR-42 was a suitable plane to fly to Shimla. But, the airline did not have any aircraft.

Its wholly-owned subsidiary Alliance Air Limited had the planes, but the same were already engaged in the North-East and Andaman and Nicobar.

If Air India still flied on this route, it would have to take planes from international airlines or a domestic private airline on lease for which viability gap funding was needed from the state government as the number of passengers wasn’t that high.

As the Air India counsel told the bench that it might start flights to Shimla under the new civil aviation policy Udan - a regional connectivity scheme, the bench sought to know what kind of funding it wanted.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) counsel, Ashwarya Sinha, opposed Air India’s argument and its request to seek funding. On its part AAI has said the airport was fit to accomodate ATR-42 aircraft.

But, the bench gave time to Air India to come back and inform the court as to when can it start the air service and posted the matter for further hearing to April end.

SC is hearing Air India’s against the Himachal Pradesh High Court order to start scheduled flights on trial basis between Delhi and Shimla. On earlier hearings the top court took strong note of lack of connectivity to Shimla and other hill regions.

AI Express likely to start Surat-Dubai flight from May 15

Apr 11, 2017

Air India Express is likely to launch direct flight from Surat to Dubai on May 15 amid demands for services on this route.

The carrier, the international budget arm of Air India, will deploy Boeing 737-800 aircraft having 189 seats on this route, sources said.

Two parliamentarians from Gujarat, Darshana Jardosh and C R Paatil, met Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani today to discuss about having more flights from Surat.

"Surat-Dubai 3 times a week from May 15 subject to FAA clearance," Jardosh said in a tweet.

An Air India spokesperson confirmed that the plan to start direct flight from Surat to Dubai has been approved. The service would commence from May 15.

The airline expects to see "50-60 per cent" seat occupancy on the route initially, sources said.

Besides, Air India is "examining" the possibility of flying to more domestic destinations from Surat.

The routes being looked at include Mumbai-Bhavnagar- Surat-Mumbai as well as connectivity to other destinations like Kolkata, Varanasi, Bangalore and Chennai.

"Additional flights to either Kolkata/ Varanasi/ Bangalore/ Chennai being considered," Jardosh tweeted.

The MP also tweeted that Lohani has given "assurance of exploring @airindiain Mumbai-Bhavnagar-Surat-Mumbai flight as a daily option for the convenience of passengers".

As per its website, Air India Express currently flies to 15 international destinations apart from domestic routes

1982 frame, stored since 2013, so probably to be scrapped in situ. But would they have the infrastructure to scrap it in Kabul and transport the metal out of there?
