Singapore-based Scoot Airlines set to tap Indian market early next year

November 2, 2015

In a bid to expand its network overseas, Singapore-based Scoot Airlines is now planning to tap the fast growing Indian market early next year.

Campbell Wilson, CEO of Scoot said the plans were on to make the carrier enter the two fast growing markets - India and China from its home base in Singapore.

"The budget carrier is also launching services to as yet unannounced destinations in India and to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia," the Australian quoted Wilson as saying.

The airlines was already operating in China, which is a major target.

Good for Indian pax! I wonder how much of Scoot traffic will be O&D to SIN, vs. connecting in SIN.

There are two possible contenders. Tiruchirappalli & Delhi

Tiruchirappalli - for it's ginormous traffic headed East. Pure O/D to both Singapore and West Malaysia. Add to the fact that
a) TR is more likely to leave TRZ in favour of Scoot
b) TR & TZ have an interline partnership.
The above two points show TZ can make TRZ viable. A 787-8 is a good bet.

Scoot did send their technical teams to evaluate TRZ airport facilities and came back pretty satisfied.

Delhi - For it's onward traffic to Australia + O/D to SIN. However, this may be least likely considering it might cannibalize from SQ's own ops.

Scoot will start direct flights to India by March end. The article says that they are planning a metro and a non-metro destination in the north and a metro in the south and TZ will align with Vistara whose hub is at Delhi.

So, I guess they are planning DEL as their metro destination in North India. As far as non-metro is concerned, will it be JAI, ATQ or AMD? I don't think it will be LKO as Tigerair has already started direct flights to SIN.

And will it be BLR, MAA or HYD in the south?

Possibly Amritsar and Tiruchirappalli. Scoot sent evaluation teams to these two points some time back to ascertain a possible service to Singapore.

If you read the newest article one more time, Aseem, you'd find that they plan to only launch MAA, ATQ & JAI.

And no, Scoot have phased out their 777 fleet permanently.

Considering the amount of competition between India-Singapore, I'd be surprised if they EVER return.

Scoot Airlines targets tier-2 Indian cities

24th May, 2016

Scoot is focussing on tier-2 cities to expand its reach in India, a senior official said on Tuesday.

"We are focussing on the tier- 2 cities in India to expand our reach. We will promote weekend travel to Singapore as the travel fare will be cheaper than flying to some of the Indian cities," Bharath Mahadeven, country head-India for Scoot told reporters here.

The airline started operating daily Singapore to Chennai services and three days in a week Singapore to Amritsar services from Tuesday.

Scoot will increase the frequency on Singapore to Amritsar route with an additional Monday service from July.

It will also commence services from Singapore to Jaipur from 2 October 2016.

He said the airline will also target the Korean corporates here for flying to Seoul and other overseas destinations.

"We are targeting 80-85 percent load factor in all the routes we fly," said Leslie Thng, chief commercial officer, Scoot and Tigerair.

According to him Scoot complements the other three airlines in the Singapore Airlines Group by serving underserved or new destinations.

We want to double our service but regulations aren't allowing: Scoot's India head

August 18, 2016

Scoot Airline, low-cost and medium-haul arm of Singapore Airlines (SIA), has said that it is ready to double it flights between Indian cities and Singapore, but regulation in India is not allowing them to expand.

The airline said that it will start its service from Jaipur to Singapore from October this year, but it has identified many more cities in India, where the demand is high.

The airline claims that average load factor is around 90 per cent and it is seeing more demand and it is right time for the government to change its policy and be more liberal.

In May, SIA moved one step closer to merging short haul LCC Tigerair and medium/long haul LCC Scoot by creating a new holding company for its two budget airline subsidiaries. Scoot and Tigerair will remain separate airlines for now, with their own operator certificates, but will have a new joint management team.

The two airlines are now operating 46 flights a week in India.

Bharat Mahadevan, country head, India, Scoot Pte Ltd said that the airline is ready to double the service considering the demand is huge, however the airline could not expand due to the regulations.

"It is high time the government consider to be more liberal," said Mahadevan. Today, Scoot is operating between Chennai and Singapore, Amristar and Singapore, while TigerAir is connecting Bangalore, Hyderabad, Tiruchy, Kochi and Lucknow with Singapore.

The airline claims that it is operating at 90 per cent load factor on an average and many times it has to turn away the customers since it could not accommodate them.

"We are hoping that government will liberalise the traffic rights at some point," he added.

The airline claims it grew around 10-15 per cent compared to last year. The airline is comparing the TigerAir's traffic with Scoot's current traffic and claims a market share of around 25 per cent market share in Chennai-Singapore sector.

Scoot currently operates 11 flights a week, including seven from Chennai and four from Amristar. From October, the airline going to start fly in Jaipur-Singapore sector four times a week.

Tiger Airways operates from five cities, including Banglaore, Hyderabad, Tiruchy (twice a day), Kochi and Lucknow.

Today both the carriers comes under one entity, though brands continues to be different for now.

"We would like to double our service, we have the capacity also but we are not able to," Mahadevan said.

Scoot to start Jaipur-Singapore flight with ‘Kamascootra’ plane

Aug 31 2016

Singapore’s no-frills airline Scoot will launch flight from Jaipur to the city state with a plane—called ‘Kamascootra’—from 2 October as it expands services from the country.

Scoot, an arm of full-service carrier Singapore Airlines, has flights from Chennai and Amritsar. Scoot’s India chief Bharath Mahadevan said the airline will be getting its 12th aircraft, Dreamliner, in the first week of September and it will be named in a unique way.

“To commemorate India services launch, we have decided to call the aircraft ‘Kamascootra’,” he said. “This is the first time that Scoot has named an aircraft in honour of a particular country other than our home base Singapore.”

The name ‘Kamascootra’ is inspired by Vatsyayana’s text ‘Kamasutra’. The “first ever non-stop flight” connecting Jaipur and Singapore will be launched on 2 October, he added. The plane will have 335 seats, including 21 premium economy.

“With Jaipur, we take another step towards the target of steadily increasing our operations in India,” Mahadevan, Scoot’s country head (India), told reporters. There will be three flights every week from Jaipur to Singapore till 29 October and afterwards, the frequency will be increased to four. Scoot operates wide-body aircraft while Tiger Airways flies narrow-body planes. The two carriers were merged into one entity—Budget Aviation Holdings Pte—which is part of Singapore Airlines.

However, Scoot and Tiger Airways continue their services under their own brand names. According to Mahadevan, Scoot and Tiger Airways together will have 50 weekly flights connecting eight destinations with Singapore from 29 Octoberonwards. Scoot began operations in May this year while Tiger Airways has been present in India since 2007.

Extending its horizon in India, Scoot will commence a service to Jaipur on October 2, with fares ranging from Rs 4,699 for the economy class (between October 2, 2016, and March 25, 2017). “Jaipur was an untapped market, and an interesting trend seen here is that a lot of people from Delhi would take flights abroad via Jaipur,” Scoot Country Head (India) Bharath Mahadevan told DH.

Explaining Scoot’s India strategy, Mahadevan said that the airline is bullish on tier I and II cities, hinting at Madurai, Pune, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru, to be in focus. “However, we can take definitive decisions on expanding our service to the said destinations, depending on the outcome of future bilateral discussions in this regard (between India and Singapore),” Mahadevan clarified, adding that there is huge demand seen emerging out of towns such as Jalandhar, Erode, Salem, and Ludhiana, as well.

Singapore Airlines to merge Scoot and Tigerair to have one LCC in fold

Nov 4, 2016

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has decided to prune the list of airline under it from four - a long haul full service (SIA); a long haul budget (Scoot): medium haul full service (SilkAir) and medium haul budget (Tigerair) - to three, in a bid to end confusion among flyers' minds. SIA, which is one of the largest airline groups in the world, will now have only one budget carrier as it has decided the merge the brands of Scoot and Tiger and the merged entity will be called Scoot.

Giving the India route details of these airlines, Scoot's country head Bharath Mahadevan told TOI: "Scoot (which operates Boeing 787 Dreamliner) flies between Singapore and Chennai, Jaipur and Amritsar. Tiger (which has a fleet of Airbus A-320) operates between Singapore and Trichy, Kochi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Lucknow. The twin low cost brands often caused confusion among flyers. By the end of 2017, SIA will have only one budget airline Scoot. We will begin the process of regulatory clearances from agencies concerned, including the Indian DGCA."

Scoot and Tiger together currently operate 50 flights a week between India and Singapore. SIA Group is the biggest foreign airline in India as the parent SIA, Scoot, Silk and Tiger fly to 15 cities in the country in addition to SIA-Tata JV Vistara which as of now flies only domestic routes but will soon start overseas flights.

Scoot eyes long-haul flights from India

Nov 18, 2016

Singapore Airlines' (SIA) long-haul LCC Scoot wants to operate its Boeing 787 Dreamliners on Singapore-India-Europe/Gulf routes under something known as "fifth freedom" of aviation. Under this freedom, an airline can fly from its home country to a second nation and take passengers from there to a third country and same on return. .
.
"There is a market for long-haul LCCs to come into India or be based here. If allowed, our fare (basic, with everything else like baggage check-in, meals, beverages and Wi-Fi costing extra) could be Rs5,000 and Rs10,000 on Delhi-London and Delhi-New York, respectively, one-way," said Bharath Mahadevan, India head of Scoot. The LCC flies from Amritsar, Jaipur and Chennai to Singapore. It will soon merge SIA's short-haul LCC Tiger into it and then fly from eight Indian cities to Singapore. .
.
However, airlines from Singapore have used up the bilateral (flying rights) with India, while Indian carriers are still using about half of their share. So, an increase in bilateral that could enable Scoot to have low-cost flights to Europe may not happen in a hurry. Lufthansa is also planning for some time to have its long-haul LCC flights to India. .

"If the bilateral are increased, we can look at Singapore-Delhi/Mumbai/Chennai/Kolkata-Europe/Gulf flights. We can fly to places like Zurich, Paris, Manchester (not London), Amsterdam, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. There is a huge pent-up demand for international travel from India and it needs to be tapped at the right price point. The demand is very strong in tier II cities," Mahadevan said.

Tigerair to now fly as Scoot in India

Jul 29, 2017

Singapore-based low-cost carrier Scoot on Friday announced that the merger of Tigerair into it has been completed and both the airlines will henceforth operate under the Scoot brand.

"All previous Tigerair flights will be operated under the Scoot brand.... This marks the completion of the Scoot-Tigerair integration process that began last May when the airlines were brought under a common holding company, Budget Aviation Holdings," Scoot country head Bharath Mahadevan said.

Mahadevan pointed out that the integration has brought about efficiency in terms of utilising the fleets of both the airlines. The airline now operates 14 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 23 Airbus A320s and has ordered six Dreamliners and 39 A320s. Post-merger, Scoot now operates 50 flights a week out of eight destinations. Earlier, Scoot used to operate 11 flights and Tigerair used to operate 39. In the next three to four years, the airline is planning to launch services from places such as Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Goa, among others.

The company's top official pointed out that the airline is profitable in India but there are constraints in terms of expansion in the market. "We are very bullish about tier-2 cities in India but are constrained by the bilateral (agreements) between the Indian and Singapore governments that does not allow us to increase our capacity because of the seat cap on every city... There is a huge pent-up demand in India," he added.
