Delhi saw 55,631,385 pax for Jan-Dec 2016, surpassing 15 million international pax for the first time (15,112,192). Growth was driven by domestic pax - 26.2% increase over 2015. Overall growth was 21%. DEL also surpassed the monthly 5 million traffic mark for the first time hitting 5.16 million pax for December 2016.

BOM's overall growth was more modest at 10%. Total pax peaked at 44,680,555, with international pax at 12,224,418.

Both DEL and BOM now rank among the world's 30 busiest airports. DEL is at 21, BOM is at 29. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_busiest_airports_by_passenger_traffic#2016_preliminary_statistics. If DEL keeps growing at ~20% for the next few years, it should vault itself into the top 10 by December 2018.

International traffic growth at the big 5 (DEL, BOM, BLR, MAA, HYD) were all between 7-9% for the last 3 quarters.

Of the big 5 (DEL, BOM, BLR, MAA, HYD), all had domestic traffic growth of between 22-28%, with the exception of BOM that only grew at 12%.

BOM growth is hampered by the congestion of the runways and the airport cannot expand any further due to encroachment around the airport perimeter.

Many airlines, mostly domestic want to fly to BOM more, but the airport authorities have restricted new flights. I think they still approve international long haul without any issues.

The domestic traffic figures for BOM for Feb and March of 2017 showed either zero or negative growth.

Is this because of runway closure issues?

Looks like it's affecting Delhi as well with a slowdown in Delhi's growth from over 20% to about 13%, given that traffic between the two cities accounts for a large chunk of overall traffic.

One of the BOM's runway was closed from 9 am to 5 pm February through April so that would explain BOM's numbers.
