Air India Says Women-Only Seats Have Nothing to Do with Sex Attacks

Air India officials says that at flight check-in, women often say that they would rather sit near a female than a male. The airline carrier is using this to explain its choice to provide women-only seating to passengers on its domestic flights.

Air India General Manager G. Prasad Rao says that the airline’s move is not connected to any reports of sexual assaults; it’s simply that since “economy class doesn’t have much space to move around easily and comfortably for women…this option will give them more choice.” One might argue that “space” does seem to be a special issue for Air India.

AI slaps ₹70 levy on domestic flights to fund regional air link

January 24

Air India has started levying a fee of ₹70 per passenger on most of the domestic routes that it operates. This will lead to a marginal increase in fares on these flights.

Air India started imposing the levy on January 16 this year, which will go to fund the government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS). The new levy is applicable on routes other than the the North-East region, Jammu & Kashmir, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.
Escrow account
Other airlines are yet to impose the regional connectivity scheme (RCS) levy, with a SpiceJet official telling BusinessLine that it had not started imposing it.

The money Air India collects will be deposited in an escrow account operated by the Airports Authority of India and will be used for subsidising flights to the interior parts of the country under UDAN. The Centre is imposing a levy of ₹7,500 per flight between cities which are up to 1,000 km apart. For distances of 1,000-1,500 km, the levy will be ₹8,000 per flight, and for above 1,500 km, ₹8,500 per flight. The levy is based on the total seats in the aircraft and not the number of seats that an airline manages to fill.

The scheme, which will be in operation for a period of 10 years, envisages providing connectivity to un-served and under-served regions of the country through revival of existing air-strips and airports.

This will be achieved through a financial stimulus in the form of Central and state government concessions, as well as viability gap funding to the interested airlines to kick off operations from such airports so that fares are kept affordable.

The fare for a one-hour journey of approximately 500 km on a fixed wing aircraft or for a 30-minute journey on a helicopter would be capped at ₹ 2,500 under the scheme, with proportionate pricing for routes of different lengths/ duration.

Air India flight to Bangkok from May

Jan 28, 2017
Air India is planning to operate a direct flight from Kolkata to Bangkok from May this year. To begin with, the 180-seater Airbus A320 Neo (narrow body airliner) will travel thrice a week.

The development was announced by an Air India official on the sidelines of Destination East- tourism summit organised by CII in Kolkata.

“Air India already has started flight from Kolkata to Singapore. Now we are planning to commence services to Bangkok,” Anil Mehta, OSD to Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani said.

The official added that AI is keen to start flight operations from Kolkata to Sikkim, once the infrastructure for the airport is ready. “The airport will be ready by 2018 and we are very much ready to start flights to Sikkim too,” the official said.

The official, however, made it clear that its plan of operating its second flight from Kolkata to Bagdogra has been shelved at this juncture. “We have been interested in adding another flight to Bagdogra but still there are issues related to night landing,” he said.

AI also ruled out possibilities of a direct flight to London from the city airport at this point of time. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has spoken to civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju on several occasions urging him to take up the matter with Air India so that there is a direct flight to London.

Air India had withdrawn its direct flight between Kolkata and an European city in 2007, citing “commercial infeasibility”.

Most of the AI departures to Asia, Europe and USA are after 10 pm, it does on the arrival from IKA. However on the departure from DEL to IKA, most transit passengers have to spend the night at the airport, so it does not connect well.

If they tweak the timings a bit, the IKA flight can connect very well to AI's DEL - SIN flight.

AI 380 DEL 23.00 - SIN 07.00
AI 381 SIN 08.20- DEL 11.30

IX125 DEL1100 – 1300IKA 738 357
IX126 IKA1400 – 2000DEL 738 357

Just advancing the IKA flight departure by 1 hour from DEL would ensure a very nice connection both ways. And there is a fair bit of demand from IKA to SIN, from what I have heard.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/ai-plans-tel-aviv-flight-but-route-will-be-circuitous/articleshow/57029482.cms

AI plans Tel Aviv flight, but route will be circuitous

Feb 8, 2017

Air India is preparing for its most circuitous route where a distance that should be covered in less than five hours will take about seven hours.

The airline is preparing for flights on the Mumbai-Tel Aviv route and the announcement could be made during Prime Minister Modi's expected visit to Israel later this year.

"Saudi Arabia does not allow planes to fly to Israel from over its airspace. So AI is drawing up a circuitous route to avoid overflying countries that have such restrictions for Israel-bound planes," said a source.

Israel is not recognised by a majority of the Islamic and Gulf countries that lie between it and India. At present Israel's El Al Airlines flies between Tel Aviv and Mumbai.

The flying time between these two cities should be less than 5 hours but El Al can't overfly some countries on direct flight path like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan due to which it has to take a longer route.

For instance, the El Al flight taking off from Tel Aviv for Mumbai has to go to the southern tip of the country, fly over Red Sea completely avoiding Saudi and then turn east from the "horn of Africa" that juts into the Arabian Sea straight to its destination. As a result, the distance of 4,057 km between Mumbai and Tel Aviv is covered in eight hours - almost the time taken to fly the 6,700-km-apart Delhi and London.

AI may have an advantage as it plans to take fly its Boeing 787 Dreamliner the regular straight route up to Saudi and then take a detour near Red Sea to enter Israel as it cannot enter the country directly from Saudi. As a result, its flying time will be a little less than El Al. AI many years ago used to operate the Airbus A-310 to Israel but had discontinued the route which could now restart later this year.

Air India looks at leasing more aircraft to add tailwind to frequency

February 8, 2017

This year, Air India (AI) will look at leasing around 34 aircraft to mount more flights on international destinations and increase frequency in domestic routes. It is looking at both narrow- and wide-body aircraft for this. Among narrow-body aircraft, the airline will lease 29 Airbus A320 while phasing out 14 from its fleet. The airline is also looking at leasing five Boeing 777s, which will be deployed in new international destinations, and increasing flights in the existing routes.

Air India Express is now taking a second look at its plans to start flights to the capital city of Tehran initially slated for later this year, Indian daily newspaper The Economic Times reported.

The carrier has alternative plans ready—Delhi-Tashkent-Almaty or Delhi-Doha-Bahrain—if geopolitical conditions make it difficult to start operations to the country. The plans, however, have not been dropped yet.

Air India to enhance air connectivity in eastern region soon

February 11

Air India is all set to enhance its connectivity in the eastern region March-end onwards. Enhancement will be done in a phase-wise manner.

On cards is the introduction of a thrice-a-week Kolkata-Bangkok flight. This apart, it will also start a flight from Mumbai to Guwahati and a Mumbai to Ranchi service.

Plans are also afoot to introduce services along the Delhi-Guwahati-Dibrugarh sector. This will be in addition to the already existing flight from Delhi to Guwahati. This flight will also link Dibrugarh to the national capital.

According to a release issued by Air India, also on the anvil is a second Kolkata to Hyderabad flight via Bhubaneshwar.

Air India is also reinstating the day-return Kolkata-Bangalore flight, which will be in addition to the existing flight to Bangalore from the city.

With the induction of more Dreamliners to its fleet this year, Air India plans to start more direct international flights, including one from Kolkata.

This route has now been shelved.

Additionally, IX will cease flying between Chennai & Kuala Lumpur effective 15FEB, marking the end of Indian carrier operations into Malaysia. Reasons cited for cancellation was apparently high operating losses due to fierce competition.

So do we think Open Skies here worked? I find it hard to understand how Indian carriers can't make KL work given the high percentage of India origin pax (as compared to Indians from Malaysia). Also its basically a LCC market so Indian carriers should be able to at least maintain a single flight where they hub people through.

Indigo, Spicejet, have the opportunity to fly to KL, but none are doing so. Indigo is great in competing in Gulf countries but does not want to even try to fly to KL.

Hopefully Air Asia India, may fly to Malaysia. Does MoCA still have this silly 5 year or 20 aircraft requirement ?

AI to get its first fuel-efficient A320Neo aircraft this week

February 13, 2017

After a delay of about one month, Air India is all set to induct the first A320Neo aircraft into its fleet this week, which will make it the third domestic carrier to have this latest single-aisle plane from Airbus.

The national carrier has plans to induct a total of 29 A320 new engine option (Neo) into its fleet by March 2019.

While Air India has already tied up with three lessors -- ALAFCO, GECAPS and CIT -- for leasing of 22 planes, the process to select a bidder for the remaining seven such planes is underway.

"Our first Airbus A320Neo plane of the 14 such aircraft being leased from ALAFCO of Kuwait will arrive here on Wednesday from Toulouse," an Air India official said today.

As per original schedule, Air India was to receive three such planes in this fiscal with two of them being in January itself.

"The deliveries have now been rescheduled and we will be getting two of these planes this month and the remaining one in March," the official said.

In the next fiscal, Air India would be taking delivery of another 15 A320Neo planes, the official added.

Air India plans to deploy its first 162-seater, two-cabin class A320Neo on the key Delhi-Chennai route, the official said, adding routes for the remaining two planes were being worked out.

Are there really more Indians travelling to Copenhagen, Madrid and Barcelona than to Kuala Lumpur and Tehran?

Or is it just good ol' AI at its whacky best?

CPH, MAD/BCN: the numbers are there. I was pleasantly surprised when Industry insiders spoke highly of these routes. And the Dream)liner's economics make it better.
KUL: even the Indian LCCs will not venture into this cut-throat destination, with guaranteed losses. Best left out.
Tehran: best left to IX and its plans. Very promising destination. Right now, the market is not conducive for an FSC presence from India: strong competition for the current traffic.
Cheers, Sumantra.

This year, it (Boeing) will deliver four more Dreamliners to Air India followed by three long haul Boeing 777s in the first quarter of 2018.

This route has now been shelved.

Air India Express (IX, Mumbai Int'l) will postpone its plan to commence flights to Tehran Imam Khomeini blaming uncertainty under Trump's administration, reports the Press Trust of India, citing a 'highly placed' source.

Air India Express' fleet of twenty-three B737-800s is primarily funded by the Export–Import Bank of the United States – the export credit agency of the US – so the carrier must comply with US sanctions. At this stage, it is unclear how much further Trump's anti-Iran stance will go. Amid this uncertainty, Air India Express has put its Iran plans on hold.

Air India to add six new international destinations in 2017

February 16, 2017

Air India on Wednesday said it plans to add six new international destinations to its network in 2017.

"We are going to add six more international spots this year," said Ashwani Lohani, Chairman and Managing Director, Air India.

"This year we are going to connect Delhi with Tel Aviv and Delhi with Washington," Lohani said at the travel trade show — SATTE 2017 — which is being organised by UBM India at Pragati Maidan here from February 15 to 17.

According to Lohani, the airline is looking at connecting New Delhi with Stockholm or Copenhagen, Mumbai with Frankfurt, and Mumbai with either Nairobi or Johannesburg.

On the regional aviation front, Lohani disclosed that the airline will start the country's "first necklace flight".

The unique flight will start from Kolkata in the morning hours onwards to Raipur from where it will head towards Indore and then to Ahmedabad and subsequently Jaipur. It will finally terminate operations in New Delhi in the evening.

"This is not the only thing we are doing. We are going to base an aircraft in Jaipur and connect Jaipur with Bikaner, Jaipur with Jaiselmer, Jaipur with Jodhpur and so on," Lohani revealed.

So now Air India operates 4 variants of the A320

A320 CEO double bogie
A320 CEO
A320 CEO sharklets (new build)
A320 NEO

I guess the only one they don't operate is the A320 CEO sharklets (retrofit).

To cut long waitlist, Air India to operate Airbus 320 to Delhi daily

Feb 19, 2017

Air India faced with persistent demands and long waiting list of passengers flying to Delhi has decided to operate an Airbus A-320 daily evening on Delhi-Bhopal-Delhi sector from February 20. The Airbus aircraft will replace the A-319 with 122-seater. Airbus will help in increasing the capacity of passengers from 122 to 1687.

Air India sources said that the airline has been planning to connect Bengaluru with Bhopal from this winter. "There has been long pending demand from both IT professionals and students to connect Bhopal with IT city Bengaluru. The flight for Begaluru most probably will start from October 2017," said an official of Air India.

The Airbus aircraft will take off from Delhi at 7.05 pm and reach Bhopal at 8.25 pm. From Bhopal to Delhi, AI-438 will take off at 9.15 pm to reach Delhi at 11 pm.

Air India (MP and CG) manager, Vishrut Acharya told TOI that Airbus with 168-seater for Delhi will be available for passengers in the evening daily. "It was noticed that there has been a long wait-list of air travellers on Delhi-Bhopal-Delhi sector.

Acharya said the decision to introduce Airbus from Bhopal was taken recently by the CMD, Air India, Ashiwini Lohani during his visit to the state capital. "In a meeting with the travel agents, there was a huge demand that the present aircraft A-319 with 122 seats to Delhi was insufficient. Lohani had directed officials to operate an Airbus in place of the existing aircraft in the evening. This will help provide connectivity to international passengers flying from Delhi," said the manager.

Talking about the suspended afternoon flight owing to re-carpeting work of runway, Acharya said, the Air India is going to resume its services on Delhi-Bhopal-Delhi sector after the completion of re-carpeting work. Owing to runway work at the Bhopal airport for past six months one flight each of Jet Airways and Air India are not operating, as there is no movement of flights from 11 am to 5 pm. Bhopal currently is connected only to Delhi, Mumbai, Raipur, Pune and Hyderabad with limited number of flights.

IAF cautious over crafr's upkeep at AI base for want of certificate

20 February 2017

While the private airliners are now looking towards the Air India facility for maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO), the Indian Air Force (IAF) is still cautious about the upkeep of its transport fleet at the national carrier’s MRO centre for want of a mandatory certification by the Russian-based Ilyushin Design Bureau (IDB).

The IDB is a much acclaimed Russian aircraft design company, and IAF has mandated this for maintaining six IL-78 MKI crafts. Since the AI is not eligible for the upkeep, the crafts has to be taken to Russia thus losing out money. MRO involves fixing any sort of mechanical, plumbing, or electrical device should it become out of order or broken (known as repair, unscheduled, or casualty maintenance).

When contacted Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) CEO HR Jaganathan downplaying the IDB certification issue, however, said that the national carrier MRO is ready to serve the IAF aircraft in question.

“We have been upgrading our facility and lot of things are happening and our MROs is world standard sans the IDB certification. We are also upgrading the computer testing technology for aircrafts by brining in the latest Automatic Test Equipment Computers (ATEQ) series VI which at one go can verify several problems in the aircraft. Earlier even the boilers, ovens, cabin instruments too used to go abroad for rectifications and changes but now Air India is equipped with one stop solution under one roof for all kind of aircrafts now flown in India,” said Jaganathan, who has been instrumental in refurbishing the MROs and signing of MoUs with other carriers.

Jagannath said this expertise can be used for MRO works of aircraft, mostly from the Air Force. “In Air Force, most of the aircraft are from Russia and historically Air India never had a Russian aircraft. If Air Force business comes to us and also get the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) of these aircraft to support us, then sky is the limit,” he said.

Air India Set To Lease Dornier 228s for New Regional Routes

February 20, 2017

Air India is planning to add Dornier 228 twin turboprops to the fleet of its Alliance Air subsidiary to boost service to second- and third-tier cities under the government-backed Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), which begins in March. Air India chairman and managing director Ashwani Lohani told AIN that the flagcarrier expects to lease 10 of the 19-seat aircraft from government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), which already produces military-configured versions under license from Switzerland Ruag Aviation.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation is now working on a requested civil type certification for the aircraft. “The certification from DGCA could well be facilitated and speeded given HAL and Air India are both government owned,” R.K Bali, managing director of India’s Business Aviation Operators Association (BAOA) told AIN. He said that HAL, which is in the process of creating a leasing division, will have to make provision for maintaining the aircraft to airline requirements. So far, it has produced 125 Dornier 228s in India.

Air India Express to consider flying to Bangkok, says CEO Sundar

Feb 21, 2017

Air India Express may be soon start flying its aircraft to Bangkok, its CEO K. Shyam Sundar said in an interview to Bloomberg on Tuesday.

After being hit by a downturn in the Gulf economy, Air India Express CEO said that it will now be turning its attention to Southeast Asia.

The budget carrier pulled out of Kuala Lumpur market recently and Sundar said that it may relook at that once market conditions improve.

The airline had planned to have 36 planes by 2018 but Sundar said that it will have to delay the project by another year.

The company will be looking at leasing two more planes this year, after leasing six aircraft last year. Sundar confirmed that AI Express currently has 23 planes.

Sundar added that an ongoing review of long-term business plans for parent Air India, which would also include Air India Express to have more network and planes has been in the pipeline.
