First aircraft for Air Carnival to arrive in Chennai on Thursday
Apr 13, 2016
Air Carnival has acquired its first aircraft, an ATR 72-500, from France. The aircraft is expected to land in Chennai on Thursday, setting in motion the launch process. The airline authorities say they aim to start operations within a month, which means there will be another flight between Coimbatore and Chennai..
"Once the aircraft arrives in Chennai, we will start the paper work to re-register the plane, currently under foreign registration, in India," said the company's marketing and facility manager, N Kalyanaraman. "Subsequently, we have to finalise in-flight catering and entertainment which should take another 25 days or so," he added. .
"Pilots and cabin crew were in various stages of training and would be ready before the final permissions comes through from the Director General of Civil Aviation. Infrastructure and technical support systems are already in place to support commercial operations," said the airline's chief operating officer, SI Nathan..
The entry of Air Carnival is likely to heat up the competition. At present there are three operators flying seven flights a day from Coimbatore to Chennai. The 70-seater flight will fly to Chennai, Madurai and Bangalore on a daily basis..
"We conducted a market survey and found that there much demand for another flight in the Coimbatore to Chennai sector, the same goes for the Chennai to Bangalore sector," said Kalyanaraman.
"Once the flight lands in Chennai from Coimbatore, it will make a round-trip to Madurai and Bangalore," he said. The airline also plans to acquire its second and third aircraft after three to six months, based on operations and revenue coming in.
"Air Carnival has started work to set up offices inside the terminal building, pilot briefing rooms and engineering and maintenance rooms," said Coimbatore Airport director, G Prakash Reddy.
Industrialists welcome the additional flight services. "They should consider shuttle flights offering fixed price open tickets even if slightly more expensive, for frequent travellers," said D Nandhakumar from the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The airline plans to price its tickets parallel to low-cost airlines, but plans to experiment with the in-flight facilities. "We are working out various options like ways to serve hot fresh on board instead of the currently packaged food served on short flight segments," said the manager. "We are also mulling ways to make the food served on-board a part of the ticket package or free of cost," he said. "A passenger flying from Coimbatore to Madurai and Bangalore on our flight will have to pay for two sectors separately, but that may change after a few months." _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Air Carnival to take wings in May
April 15
New airline Air Carnival is expected to take wings in May.
Manish Kumar Singh, Chief Executive, Air Carnival told BusinessLine that the arrival of the first aircraft —ATR 72-500 from Elix Aviation Capital Ltd, Ireland — signalled the company’s seriousness, intent of providing air connectivity to parts of the southern region.
The carrier leased by CMC (Coimbatore Marine College) Group graced Indian skies over Chennai last evening, Singh said, adding “This is the first of a proposed initial fleet of five ATRs. We are in discussion with other companies as well for leasing aircraft.
“We will start operating as soon as we have three in place.”
“The new airline will be based out of Coimbatore and is slated to be re-registered in India as VT-CMA.
“We are now gearing up to obtain Air Operator Permit (AOP) as a scheduled regional airline (south). The aircraft would relocate to Coimbatore on completion of the regulatory requirements for registration, and certification for airworthiness under Indian law.”
While the infrastructure and technical support systems are said to be in place for its commercial operation, the company is expecting to complete training of pilots and cabin crew before getting the permit.

We plan to fly to Chennai, from to Madurai and return to Chennai, and then to Bengaluru and return to Chennai and finally fly back to Coimbatore at night. We always have more demand than supply for the Coimbatore-Chennai route. Another problem is with the first flight departing only at 8am and the last return flight being as early as 5.30pm, it becomes uncomfortable for many businessmen. So, we plan to run our first flight at around 7am and the return flight at sometime between 9pm and 10pm. We also realized that Chennai to Madurai required more connectivity for businessmen, politicians and pilgrims. We also plan to experiment with more routes after a few months.

Air Carnival to start flying from July 18
July 12, 2016
Coimbatore-based Air Carnival has become the fourth regional airline of the country. The airline, which secured its air operator’s permit last week, will initially fly daily to and from three Tamil Nadu airports at Coimbatore, Chennai and Madurai beginning July 18.
“We got a regional scheduled operation permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on July 4. We will start operations from 18{+t}{+h}July on four sectors: Coimbatore-Chennai, Chennai-Madurai, Madurai-Chennai and Chennai-Coimbatore initially,” Air Carnival chief executive officer Manish Kumar Singh told The Hindu over telephone.
The first flight from Coimbatore to Chennai next Monday will depart at 6:55 a.m., offering a base fare of Re. 1 and an all-inclusive fare of around Rs. 800-Rs. 1,000, airline executives said.
Air Carnival will become the first regional airline offering fares inclusive of in-flight entertainment and food, Mr. Singh said.
The airline will compete with other southern region players such as TruJet and Air Pegasus which have three aircraft each and Air Costa with four planes.
To start with, the airline will deploy one 72-seater aircraft (ATR 72-500) with four flights daily on the Coimbatore-Chennai-Madurai sector, and in the next 15 days, will increase the daily frequency to 10, Mr. Singh said.
After inducting two more 72-seater planes in September, the airline will spread its wings to other places such as Tirupati, Hubli, Vishakhapatnam, Rajahmundry and Mangalore, the CEO added.
“We are going to focus primarily on the southern market for now. Once we get more aircraft, we will invest heavily and expand. Southern India has been a very attractive market for all domestic airlines – many of which are based out of here,” Mr. Singh said.

Air Carnival offering Re 1 base fare on first day
Jul 14, 2016
Air Carnival, which got its air permit on July 4, has decided to take on their competitors head on by introducing a promotional base fare of Re 1 on the first day of operations and an all-inclusive fare of Rs 999 for the first three months.
"On the first day, tickets on all the four flights, Coimbatore to Chennai and back and Chennai to Madurai and back, will be priced at Re 1 plus taxes," said the airline's CEO, Manish Kumar Singh.
"The tickets will then be priced at an all-inclusive fare of Rs 999 for the first three months—July 19 to October 18," he said. "We are doing this to draw passengers in to in turn experience flying with us," he added.
The airline has also confirmed that it plans to model itself along the low-cost airlines in the country. "Even after the initial three months, our tickets will be priced competitively, though we can't reveal our base prices" said Singh.
"Like other airlines, we will take up dynamic pricing to balance out the costing," he said.
Officials said tickets have already opened on its website www.aircarnival.in and other travel agents like www.cleartrip.com. "We have tied up with MakeMy Trip, Yatra and Akbar travels and will be integrated into their options by Friday," he said.
The airline, which currently has only one leased aircraft, plans to introduce flights from Chennai to Bangalore and back in another three weeks.
"Currently our operations begin at 6.55am in Coimbatore and wind up at 1.20pm. But once we include flights to Bangalore and back from Chennai, our operations time will be extended," said Singh. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Coimbatore-based Air Carnival commences operations
July 18, 2016
Low cost carrier Air Carnival today launched operations with its maiden flight from Coimbatore to Chennai.
The airline plans to focus on short haul services with its ATR72-500 aircraft. The promoters are infusing around $12 million to take three aircraft on lease.
The carrier charged Re 1 for the first flight. It plans to keep the tariff at Rs 999 for the first three months.
The first flight took off from Coimbatore Airport at 7.30 a.m. and landed at Chennai airport around 9 a.m.
On the first day, its flight route is Coimbatore-Chennai-Madurai-Chennai-Coimbatore.
The airline will have daily service for 10 sectors including 3 daily flights from Chennai to Coimbatore (up and down) and two daily flights from Chennai to Madurai (up and down).
The 70-seater aircraft are more economical for short haul services and they are proven one in India, said Manish Singh, CEO, Air Carnival.
The promoter CMC group plans to infuse around $12-15 million (of which $5 million already invested) initially, which will fund to acquire at least 3-5 aircrafts. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Air Carnival plans flight service from Tiruchi
September 17, 2016
Domestic operation at the fast-growing Tiruchi International Airport is expected to improve with Air Carnival expressing its interest to launch a service in the Chennai-Tiruchi– Chennai sector.
The regional airline has conveyed its proposal to the airport authorities here to start a morning flight service from Chennai to Tiruchi and back. In a recent communication to the Tiruchi Airport Director, the airline has sought office space at the airport. Airport Director K. Gunasekaran told The Hindu that a senior official from Air Carnival is expected to visit soon for an interaction with officials of the Tiruchi airport which witnesses more overseas flight operations than domestic services.
Only after the deliberations and an official clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation would things crystallise into something concrete about the new flight service, Mr. Gunasekaran said.
Tiruchi presently has domestic connectivity only to Chennai with the Jet Airways operating three services a day in that sector. The proposed move by Air Carnival comes amid heavy demand from the travel industry and other bodies which have been seeking better domestic connectivity from Tiruchi to Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi.
Given the heavy demand, the airport authorities wrote to Air India a few months ago to resume flight services in the Tiruchi-Mumbai-Tiruchi sector. Although Bengaluru-based Fly Easy airline evinced interest in mid-2015 to launch a Bengaluru -Tiruchi - Bengaluru service, the proposal never took off.
Despite the lone domestic connectivity, Tiruchi airport handled over 1.45 lakh domestic passengers in 2015-16. Till July this fiscal, about 60,000 domestic passengers used the airport. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Air Carnival to change hands, 100% stake sale likely this week
April 3, 2017
Promoters of Air Carnival are all set to sell their 100 per cent stake "possibly this week" for about Rs 73 crore in the regional airline, which started flying less than a year ago. Air Carnival is the second regional carrier after grounded Air Pegasus to scout for new owners amid funding issues.
Promoted by Coimbatore Marine College (CMC) group, Air Carnival commenced operations in July last year with one ATR- 72 aircraft. Confirming that the airline is on the block, Air Carnival Chairman and MD S Irudaya Nathan said discussions are in "advanced stages". "We are diluting entire stake in the carrier. The discussions (with the prospective buyer) are about to be finalised within this week," Nathan told PTI from Coimbatore.
He said the airline had planned to acquire two more aircraft by October 2016, but the efforts did not materialise as it could not raise the requisite funds. Subsequently, it was decided to "sell it (the airline) to a new owner and keep it afloat", Nathan said.
Without divulging details about the potential investor, he said, "The new investor has been chosen on first come first serve basis." According to him, a price of Rs 73 crore has been quoted for the stake sale and that the "deal is likely to be signed by this Friday".
Air Carnival operates 10 daily flights to three cities -- Chennai, Trichy and Tuticorn -- from Coimbatore. While starting operations, the promoters had announced funds infusion to the tune of USD 12 million and plans to have a fleet of three aircraft by October 2016.

Air Carnival aircraft grounded
April 25
Air Carnival has stopped plying its aircraft from April 6, amidst talk of its promoters off-loading their stake.
The aircraft was grounded as the engineers went on a two-day strike demanding their salary dues.
The regional carrier, which started operations in July last with one ATR- 72 aircraft, is said to have parked the aircraft in Hosur.
The owners of the aircraft, Elix Aviation Capital, is now desperately trying to retrieve the aircraft documents to the aircraft from the promoters of Air Carnival.
Sources in the know of the development told BusinessLine that the lessor has been after the promoter to retrieve the papers for a week now, in vain.
Manufactured in 2007, the aircraft is said to have been operated by Kingfisher Airlines before Air Carnival took it on lease.
“The papers pertaining to the aircraft – from the manufacturing date to the present - is stored in 30 boxes,” said the source.
Meanwhile, Airports Authority of India has issued directions to the company for vacating the office space for non-settlement of dues at Coimbatore airport. The total outstanding as on April 20, 2017 is Rs 9,39,849.
The deadline for settlement has been mentioned as April 24, 2017, failing which the AAI would force the service operator to vacate the office space (ticketing counter, back-up office space in old viewing gallery and the space near TM office) at midnight in line with the agreement, the AAI communication said.
The only operating aircraft has been grounded and most operations have come to a standstill.

DGCA suspends Air Carnivals flying permit

Aviation regulator DGCA has suspended the flying licence of Coimbatore-based carrier Air Carnival, which has not operated a single flight since early April.
With this, Air Carnival has become the third regional carrier, after Air Pegasus and Air Costa, whose air operator permit has been suspended by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in the last eight months.
"The DGCA has suspended Air Operator Permit (AOP) of Air Carnival after it failed to satisfy the regulator in its response to the show-cause notice," a DGCA official said.
The order for suspension of the flying licence of Air Carnival was issued earlier this month, the official said.
Air Carnival Chairman and Managing Director S Irudaya Nathan was not available for comments.
As per section 15(2)(b) of Schedule XI of the Aircraft Rules 1937, DGCA may cancel or suspend permit of an airline for such period as it thinks fit, if it is satisfied that the holder of the permit has failed to establish a safe, efficient and reliable service.
However, before cancelling or suspending the flying permit of an operator, the regulator issues a show-cause notice with a two-week time to respond.
Promoted by the CMC Group (Coimbatore Marine College), Air Carnival had started operations last July with with one ATR-72 aircraft.
Before grounding operations, the regional carrier was operating 10 daily flights to three cities -- Chennai, Trichy and Tuticorin -- from Coimbatore.
Its loan aircraft has also been deregistered and taken away by the lessor, the official said.
The promoters had earlier inked a deal for a 100 per cent stake dilution to an angel investor for about Rs 70 crore, but the transaction is yet to be completed, sources said.
Significantly, only one carrier -- TrueJet -- of the four airlines which were operating under the regional AOP has survived the market in the last almost one year.
The Bengaluru-based Air Pegasus was the first one to cease operations on July 27 last year on account of fund crunch.
Consequently, the DGCA suspended its AOP in last November.
Though its promoters had announced a deal with another aviation firm FlyEasy in January and said the carrier would resume services under the new management from March, the airline failed to take-off.
Then in February, another regional carrier, Vijaywada-based Air Costa announced suspension of its services initially for a few days and later indefinitely for want of cash and non-payment of dues to the aircraft lessors.
Its AOP was also suspended last month, according to the DGCA official. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.
