Oh I see - thanks for the clarification. IMHO quite nasty to charge your customers for wanting to sit with their kids, but I guess all airlines will now do it Sad

Fliers Can Carry Power Banks Only In Hand Baggages: Jet Airways

December 23, 2016

Jet Airways today said passengers can carry power banks only in their cabin bags and not in check-in baggages.

In recent times, safety concerns have been expressed in certain quarters about electronic devices, especially those having lithium batteries being carried in check-in baggages.

Against this backdrop, Jet Airways said that in the interest of safety, power banks would be allowed only in hand baggages.

"In the interest of safety and as mandated by the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation), Jet Airways will not permit carriage of power banks from any manufacturer to be carried in guests' check-in baggage on board all its flights.

"However, guests may carry these charging devices in their cabin bags," the airline said in a release.

15a, abhijit - Jet's December magazine still showed HYD-SHJ as a route that will commencing soon, alongside BLR-CMB/SIN.

Jet have also enforced the power bank policy quite strictly, asking at check in to all passengers if its in the cabin baggage not.

It is not just Jet. Air India as well. Since quite a while. Some directive, I guess.

Jet Airways flight 9W 2374 skids off runway, 15 passengers injured, AAIB to probe mishap

Dec 27

A Jet Airways flight with 161 people on board skidded off the runway on Tuesday morning at Dabolim airport in Goa. The Jet Airways flight 9W 2374 from Goa to Mumbai veered off while aligning for take off. 15 passengers suffered minor injuries during evacuation process. “Jet Airways flight whilst taking off from HANSA runway 26 aborted take off and spun around 360 degrees.” said Indian Navy. Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will investigate the Jet Airways accident, while DGCA officials are already on site. Operations at Dabolim airport in Goa has resumed.

The Jet Airways flight 9W 2374 which had arrived from Dubai and was bound for Mumbai, was about to take off when it skidded off the runway. When the evacuation was on, the aircraft tilted forward, an eyewitness said, triggering panic among passengers. “All guests and crew have been safely evacuated. Few guests have sustained injuries during the evacuation process and medical assistance is being coordinated by the Jet Airways team and the airport authorities,” Jat Airways said in a statement.

The Jet Airways is making alternate travel arrangements for its guests to/from Goa in order to minimize inconvenience, said the airline. Besides 154 passengers, there were 7 crew members on board. “When people were getting down the plane, it suddenly tilted forward triggering panic and chaos,” a passenger told reporters at Chicalim cottage hospital in Vasco.

On 29th Dec, my 9W flight from BLR to TRV (which originates in DEL) - 9W 823 was delayed by 3 hours from DEL.

9W decided to operate the BLR-TRV leg using an a/c that had landed from BOM.

So between 1915 and 2005 there were two 9W 823 flights in the Indian airspace - one doing DEL-BLR and another doing BLR-TRV.

Is this legally allowed? If yes, how does the ATC and airline differentiate between the two flights?

Jet Airways to begin services on Bengaluru – Colombo route
Jet Airways will launch non-stop services on Bengaluru – Colombo sector in the wee hours of 5th January 2017. The daily service will be operated by B737-800 aircraft with 12 seats in Business and 156 in Economy. The airline which recently announced Bengaluru as one of its focus city and domestic hub after Mumbai and Delhi, had started services on Bengaluru – Singapore sector effective 14th December 2016.

While the airline has been operating to Singapore from Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, it operates to Colombo only from Mumbai. With the red-eye flights from Bengaluru, the airline could offer convenient connections to Delhi, Hyderabad & Chennai – the largest market between India and Sri Lanka.

Once again, a lovely piece of analysis, replete with history, some background, some facts and figures, and some speculation, all of which we love.
Cautious expansion at Bengaluru: I wonder, why?
The timings are oriented to work around the BLR closure time: which is nice, but do you see the airline operating at these odd hours May onwards? Second, do you see the loads during this period, perhaps owning to the 9W brand loyalty, EY partnership and AF/DL/KL link?
Indian carriers: do you think they know that they cannot compete with the Srilankan's cost structure?
Thank you once again, for a though-provoking article!
Cheers, Sumantra.

I thought Jet was going to announce some US flights? Any word. Their Delta partnership doesn't really offer a year round quick connection form India to EWR (at least half the year there is a long wait in AMS one way). I think they should start EWR and SFO. These two cities plus YYZ are really the only ones where an Indian traffic is large enough that an indian carrier might have an advantage

So Delta announced that Skymiles members WILL receive full FF benefits on Jet. They just haven't revealed how earnings will work. I feel they will treat Jet like its tier 1 airlines (with whom they have JV's / investments). Let's see.

Well, they've done exactly that.

Jet Air to recapture lost ground with 11 Boeing 737s

7 Feb 2017

Jet Airways, which has seen a dip in its market share in recent times, will now lease 11 old Boeing 737s in an incremental manner by the end of this year, before phasing them out with the arrival of 75 Boeing 737 Max aircraft from 2018 onwards.

"The 11 Boeing 737s are older planes and will be used for temporary basis till the induction of Boeing 737 Max," said a Jet Airways source aware of the development.

It is pertinent to note that Boeing 737 Max will mainly come as replacement for the existing leased aircraft which will be returned on the expiry of their lease.

However, a Jet Airways spokesperson refused to comment on the story, calling it speculative.

Turkish Airlines is to return a A330-200 leased from Jet Airways, this month.
The airframe in question is TC-JIL, the former VT-JWH.

This aircraft, along with JIK & JIM have been sold off.

http://www.jetairways.com/documents/Transcript-2-Q2FY17.pdf

Quote:

In line with our overall deleveraging strategy we recently sold and leased back two of our 737-800
and have since sold three of A330 aircraft, which were leased out to Turkish Airways for quite
sometime now.
These transactions resulted in one time loss of 130 Crores on A330 and one time gain
or 133 Crores on 737 which are reflected in other expenses and other income respectively

So, it may not be returning to 9W.]

Jet Airways may order at least 50 Boeing 737 Max planes this year

Feb 15 2017

Jet Airways Ltd may order at least 50 Boeing 737 Max planes valued at about $5 billion this year to expand its market and secure spots in the aircraft supply chain, a top executive from the US aircraft maker said.

“Jet will certainly look at a re-order for the Max. I would say minimum 50 and then you go higher than that. The reason I say 50 on the basis of growth and replacement (of Jet airways’ current fleet and orders). However, they might go beyond 50, based on what SpiceJet has done or IndiGo has done or even GoAir has done, a relatively smaller airline in operations than Jet. So, Jet may go for a higher figure but I would say 50 at least,” Dinesh Keskar, senior vice president sales, Asia Pacific and India of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, told Mint in an interview on the sidelines of the Aero India air show here.

Jet had similarly ordered 75 Boeing Max planes in 2014. It will have a window this year to book additional slots.

“They have to do sometime this year,” Keskar said, referring to the supply chain.

Incident: Jet Airways B773 near Cologne on Feb 16th 2017, loss of communication leads to intercept

Feb 19th 2017

A Jet Airways Boeing 777-300, registration VT-JEX performing flight 9W-118 from Mumbai (India) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL360 being handed over from Bratislava (Slovakia) to Prague (Czech Republic) Center when radio contact was lost with the aircraft, that continued along its planned flight track. Germany dispatched two Eurofighters to intercept the aircraft, the fighter aircraft were already airborne when radio contact with 9W-118 was restored via the emergency frequency about 60nm north of Nuremberg (Germany). Although radio contact was re-established, the fighter aircraft continued the intercept, ATC informed 9W-118 as well as the aircraft flying above and behind 9W-118 about the pending intercept. About 20nm north of Cologne (Germany) 9W-118 was seen accompanied by two fighter aircraft. 9W-118 continued to London for a safe landing.

On Feb 19th 2017, following release of initial coverage, The Aviation Herald received information that radio contact with the aircraft had been lost on hand off from Bratislava to Prague Center, a swap of digits is being suspected (the crew tuned 132.980MHz while the correct frequency was 132.890MHz). Germany dispatched two Eurofighter Aircraft when the Boeing 777 entered Germany's Airspace. Radio contact with the aircraft was restored about 60nm north of Nuremberg, the fighter aircraft began to slow down expecting the intercept would be aborted, a decision was made however to continue and complete the intercept. Air Traffic Control informed 9W-118 as well as the other aircraft, flying above and behind 9W-118, about the pending intercept. The fighter aircraft met with 9W-118 northeast of Frankfurt (Germany) and were seen by ground observers at about 16:50Z about 20nm north of Cologne still at the side of 9W-118.

The airframe in the above incidence was the last 77W leased to Etihad, and now returned.

VT-JEG -> To Gulf Air as VT-JEG -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEG -> To Etihad as VT-JEG -> To Etihad as A6-JAE -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEX.

This brings an end to the 77W lease saga (for now). All 777s are back with 9W.

To update my list :

Clear as Mud - the 9W 77W story ... so far

VT-JEE -> To Turkish as TC-JJC -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEL (II) -> To Etihad as A6-JAF -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEW
VT-JEF -> To Turkish as TC-JJB -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEM -> To Turkish as VT-JEM -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEM

I think you meant JIN instead of JIK.

9W commences Delhi-Mumbai-Madurai effective 26MAR

9W336 DEL0800 - 1005BOM1045 - 1250IXM 73H D

9W357 IXM1330 - 1535BOM1630 - 1835DEL 73H D

As member basheer1211 reports, Delhi-Madurai is unavailable for booking as of now.

This will be the first nonstop on Mumbai-Madurai after Air India and Spicejet's 1-stop services on the sector, while Delhi-Madurai will receive its 3rd 1-stop flight after Spicejet and indiGo (commencing 01MAR).

Jet actually operated Mumbai-Madurai 15 years ago with a 734, this service therefore marks the resumption of nonstops on this route.

Didnt Jet do a BOM-TRV-IXM-BOM triangular route in the past?

Hong Kong Airlines and Jet Airways Ink Codeshare Agreement

February 23, 2017

Hong Kong Airlines and Jet Airways have entered into a codeshare partnership in a move that will help them significantly enhance connectivity between India and the Asia-Pacific region.

As part of the reciprocal agreement, Hong Kong Airlines will place its marketing code “HX” on Jet Airways’ flights between Hong Kong and Mumbai as well as Delhi in India. Jet Airways, in turn, will place its marketing code “9W” on Hong Kong Airlines’ flights operating between Hong Kong and Okinawa and Tokyo in Japan; Denpasar in Indonesia; Hanoi in Vietnam; Bangkok in Thailand; and Auckland in New Zealand.

The agreement will allow Hong Kong Airlines to offer its guests a daily service connecting the key business cities of Hong Kong, Mumbai and Delhi. The codeshare will provide opportunities for both airlines to expand their reach and cater to guests across the region.

It will also enhance connectivity for Jet Airways guests from Mumbai and Delhi via Hong Kong to multiple destinations in the Asia Pacific region including to first-time codeshare destinations Okinawa in Japan and Auckland in New Zealand thus enhancing the proposition for travelers who are increasingly seeking newer and more varied travel experiences. Guest can also enjoy the multi-gateway travel flexibility of traveling to/from India to Hong Kong in one direction and via Bangkok in the other direction.

Mr. Li Dianchun, Chief Commercial Officer, Hong Kong Airlines said:

“We are very happy to establish the partnership with Jet Airways. From our observation, there has been great potential in the India market as increasing travelers from India tend to transit via Hong Kong to Japan, South East Asia and even farther to Auckland.

“By connecting Hong Kong with Mumbai and Delhi, the new agreement enables passengers from these key cities to travel seamlessly to a bunch of popular destinations in Hong Kong Airlines’ network. On the other hand, our passengers can also access India easily for either business or leisure travel purpose. We look forward to providing the passengers with our world-class service, meanwhile supporting the economic and cultural exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Jayaraj Shanmugam, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways, said:

“As a network carrier, Jet Airways has always focused on meeting the rapidly rising travel needs of our guests for seamless connectivity and greater convenience. Our strategic codeshare partnerships with leading airlines across the world allows us to meet that perfectly. The codeshare with Hong Kong Airlines will enable our guests to experience the joy of flying to key destinations such as Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam and New Zealand, via Hong Kong through our hubs in Mumbai and Delhi.

“Both business and leisure travel between India and the destinations covered by this arrangement has been growing at a remarkable CAGR of 12% over the last five years, on the back of sustained economic activity. We believe this partnership will further strengthen the choice available for our guests, especially to our first-time codeshare destinations such as Okinawa in Japan and Auckland in New Zealand.”

They make you pay for middle seats? Confused

If you select them in advance, yes. I guess they're targeting families who want to sit together. A family of 3 would therefore have to pay not only for the window and aisle, but also the middle seat, which they would / should get by default.

Oh I see - thanks for the clarification. IMHO quite nasty to charge your customers for wanting to sit with their kids, but I guess all airlines will now do it Sad

Flying with a minor? Seat allotment a major hassle

Feb 24, 2017

On paper, the seat selection fee is optional like the other add-ons of extra baggage or food. Technically, if you buy an air ticket, you are assured a seat and you pay a selection fee only if you want a window or aisle seat, or exit row seat with extra legroom. In reality though, if you are a parent or travelling with a minor, the selection fee is not really an optional choice. For, the only way to ensure your kid is not seated next to strangers is to pay for seats including a middle seat.

Many parents don't know airlines have stacked the odds against them. Vaibhav Vishal, a writer-based in Mumbai learnt this the hard way last week. On February 19 morning, he logged on to the airline website to check-in for his evening flight G8 446. "My wife and I were allocated seats 17E and 19E and my seven-year-old son was put on 20E. We were in middle seats in three different rows," said Vishal. "I called up the airline call centre and asked them to put either me or my wife on a seat next to my son as I didn't want him seated next to strangers. The call centre official said I will have to pay extra," he said."It's criminal that they do this. It was a father's plea, it was a question of my son's safety," Vishal said. He then tweeted the minister of state for civil aviation, Jayant Sinha, who forwarded his tweet to the airline and finally the issue was resolved.

Not just GoAir, currently seat selection policies in most airlines are such that parents could find themselves seated away from their kids, especially on full flights. In June 2013, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) capped the number of preferred seats for pre-booking at 25% of the overall capacity on domestic flights, only to lift the ban in April 2015. Jet Airways, IndiGo, GoAir and SpiceJet levy a seat selection fee even for the middle seat on their domestic flights. Air India and Vistara levy a seat selection fee only for middle seats in the front or exit rows where a passenger gets extra legroom and so a web check-in on these airlines would be enough to ensure the child is seated next to a parent.

Though all airline officials state that they try to seat kids with a parent, none of them have committed to it in writing (only those travelling with infants are assured the seats reserved for bassinets). Like British Airways, for instance. The UK-based airline makes it clear on its website. "We will make sure each child under 12 years sits next to an adult from your booking," BA says.

In India, parents have to be careful. Anand Sunder, a frequent flyer says: "When travelling with our daughter, our first priority is to web check-in. My 10-year-old is generally allotted a seat next to one of us. But twice she wasn't and I was forced to go for the preferred seat option. It's pitiful that airlines milk parents in such a manner."

The only TRV-IXM flight that I remember was Damania-NEPC or someone similar having a TRV-IXM-MAA flight.

What is criminal about this - if you want to ensure that your child is travelling with you or your wife, then you have to preselect the seats and pay for it, otherwise you will be in this predicament. If one does not want to pay extra, then they should accept the allotted seat assignment.

As usual TOI calls this a major hassle, when it really is not, just pay for it.

9W has made a few more changes in their international schedules in S17

1. From 26th March re-timing of 1 of 2 daily BOM AUH and LKO AUH - both have shifted to a later departure from India (1940 for LKO, 2045 for BOM) and both have become turn around flights with departures around midnight from AUH. 9W in all has 9 daily flights to AUH - 2 daily each from BOM and DEL and single dailies from COK, PNQ, HYD, IXE and LKO.
There could be further changes and there would likely be re-timing of some domestic flights ex LKO and HYD to position aircraft

2. BOM DXB (currently 4X 737 + 1X 77W daily) goes to 6 daily 737 from 1st May with reintroduction of an 845 PM departure from BOM. the 77W from this service moves to BOM JED

3. From 1st June, BOM SIN (currently 2 daily 777) goes to 2 daily A330

4. From 26th March, selective flights on DEL SIN, DEL HKG and DEL DMM go from 330 to 777. From 1st June, all flights move to 777

5. BOM RAJ reduces from 4 daily in W16 to 3 daily in S17 with 1 daily flight replaced by BOM BDQ

Thanks to Ojas and ameya for the inputs.
