Hi all

A number of things came together for making this trip happen, had some (personal) work in Delhi, 9W with their 330-300s on morning evening flights from BOM & DEL (respectively) and a load of expiring Skywards Miles - Which btw can be redeemed on 9W at a flat 15000 miles return ticket on any domestic pair.

Booked 9W 346 - 362 for Sunday Nov 27, 2016. Seamless booking experience. [Very Happy]

Now while systems show the 330-300 on the aforementioned route, do note that 9W markets [and operates] them very much as 330-200/300, and ever since the start of the winter schedule, they've been deploying the 332 [predominantly] or the 333 and the occasional 737 on this routing [BOM DEL CCU DEL BOM DMM BOM] . In any case, didn't bother me that much, i'd yet to be on a 9W 330 Y class, [only 332 experience was in J 9W 362 a couple of months ago], but obviously hoped for the 333.

Was unable to select seats either. [due to the ticket being issued by EK, perhaps].

Jumping to flight day, woke up and Uber-ed my way to T2, for a paltry Rs 238/- [From Dahisar West, it's ridiculously cheap].

Mediumish line entering T2.

Checked in using the Kiosk since I had no luggage [long long lines in the check in counters], Kiosk only permitted check in for the first leg, not the return, plane was a 330-300 right but the empty looking seat map scared me a little.

Emptyish Security check, basically was done with all formalities in under 10 mins.

T2 in non peak times is full of these completely deserted areas, specially the swing area leading into the SW Pier. Not a soul to be seen.

AI LHR and EK running late.

Just walked around T2 at this time always fun.

Of the 4 333s in 9Ws fleet, JWS & JWT were busy operating DEL AMS YYZ, JWR just operated BOM HKG a few hours ago, so ideally the only plane that were possible, was JWU, which operated BOM BKK BOM DOH BOM.

Boarding gate was a remote gate, something I didn't really mind.
A little chat with the gate agent revealed that there were only 103 pax on board, but was immediately followed up by saying that "There airbus flights don't have a seat empty on weekdays", said this particular rotation is likely to be put up to a 777 from March. Impressive.

Right then, boarding announced, bus ride across domestic - international T2 is always fun, and then they dropped us right at the tail of JWU, walk down JWU to the second gate where the step ladder was attached.

On the bus. I understand the sentiments of anyone who tried to consume that.

Given the low loads, everyone was relatively relaxed.

Yep.

Ofcourse, I was the last one from that bus to board and ofcourse, given the photo spree, the crew were curious to which I said, I'm flying this only for the 330-300 !

The dirtyish window really broke my heart. Big dust spots, outside the window. Nothing I could do about it.

742F !

Pushed back bang on schedule.

DXB/SIN

Quiet & Steep Takeoff.

Good breakfast. Tasty, reasonable quantity, just that i'd have preferred fruits instead of the kitkat. That sort of makes the tray look cheap.
This was promptly followed up with tea / coffee.
Crew was attentive, nothing over the top though.

Empty!

IFE wasn't switched on, just this flight map.

If I can put in a word about the fantastic Y seat, amazing width and super legroom as well. It both reclines and slides forward making it very comfortable. Perfect for the range of the 333.

Soon after we were descending.

RETURN

Came in well ahead of departure, and stumbled into a massive queue outside the 9W counters. Spotted a kiosk and saved myself 30 mins.
To my horror, not a single window was available, infact barely 5-6 seats were left to choose from.

Passed a very crowded security area, and went into the Plaza Premium lounge, where I met Spiderguy, and caught up with a bit of the Ind vs Eng match.

The T3 domestic shopping area is barely 40% of what it used to be with construction going on all over.

DC3 !

Went to the edge of the pier to kill some time. Got an sms from 9W that the flight was 25 mins late.

Walked back to my gate once JWU landed from CCU.

I had barely slept for a couple of hours the previous night, and walked around a lot in Delhi over course the day, so was starting to get a little tired and sleepy.

Went to the gate agent and asked him about loads, he said 2 seats vacant in J, that's it!

Boarded, and dozed off. Woke up during the meal service [yep slept through the takeoff !].

This. Yes. This was the meal service.

Bloody I didn't even know what to say. The kitkat is actually a high point on that tray. Don't get me wrong, it tasted perfectly good, but look at the quantity.

This followed by tea / coffee.

I've mentioned this before a couple of times before as well, but 9W has their best crews on their prime time flights, super set of crew on this flight as well, 4 people managed a 260 odd seater Y cabin, and were through and professional.

Landed around 20 mins behind schedule and docked at the international side again, meant a bus deplaning which is always fun.

Everywhere. Everywhere !

Strict security at the ramp ensured that I didn't click anymore this time around.

Verdict

Well, I got the 330-300 I wanted. Incredible seats. Very nice crew as well, especially on the way back. Don't know why the food quantity is crashing, the meal on DEL BOM was embarrassing to say the least. And the kitkats seem to be a popular trend, sadly, else 9W deserts were something everyone looked forward too. Good to see many 9W widebodies at the active ramps, good to hear that the wide bodies are doing decent on their new assignments too.

JWU went on to DMM and then BKK the next morning.

Thanks for reading.

Very well presented report. Loved the pictures especially the aerial shots of Delhi airport. I can testify that these are the best aerial pictures of VIDP.

Shocked at the quantity of the meal on your Delhi-Mumbai flight. My daughter got double of this as a pre booked child meal on the Delhi-Mumbai A330 flight last year.

Very true. That was the first time I saw such clear pics of DEL.

Superb report! Loved the dawn pics at BOM and also the DEL overview!

P.S. That lovely Dakota is a Basler BT-67, a remanufactured DC-3 retrofitted with Pratt&Whitney PT6A-67R turboprop engines.. Rare!

Excellent TR. This would be one domestic sector to get upgraded on Wink Shame abt the meal though.

Interesting to see a IA aircraft at BOM. Does it fly to Baghdad or Basra or Najaf?

When one has a combination of a very recent and comparatively unique trip, and a lovely write-up with great pictures, one has a winner!
Thank you Rishul, on all accounts. The reads bean counter going up, and the large number of replies bears testament to the quality of the matter you have presented.
You have captured the plus and minus points of the 9W current experience, beautifully, and in a completely impartial manner. This is very nice.
The new 9W A333...wow!
The `romance' of an early start to the day, for a much sought-after flight is something only we avgeeks will appreciate.
You have got some beautiful low-light pictures in.
Bus boarding and de-boarding a wide-body...always a exhilarating experience!
It is also nice that you got a nice set of crew members. It is a pity that 9W does not switch the IFE on, on its domestic legs, on wide-bodies, unlike AI. The food quantity being inconsistent (and sometimes, greasy recipes, but thankfully, not on your flights!), and the dessert rollback (9W desserts have traditionally been excellent), is something Jet will possibly need to re-look for a better passenger experience.
I will join Himmat Sir and all others, in the stream of accolades on the DEL pics from the air: s-u-p-e-r-b! You were also lucky to get some of the best weather around DEL, for photography, after the pollution part a few months back, and the three-day old fog.
The DEL airport spotting was sheer eye-candy, right from the Bell Aviation Basler Conversion DC-3, to the sunset shots.
Thank you for sharing a gem of a trip report with us!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Excellent TR, RiS -> some of the best aerial/ramp shots I've ever seen.

Food is downright horrific. WTH, Jet? Why are you going back to the dark ages (2012). AI gets the meal presentation hands down (fills the tray).

Quantity was horrific on the return leg. But lowering in standard for sure.
