MEGA Maldives To Extend Its Flights To India

18 August

MEGA Maldives Airlines has been awarded an Air Operators Permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India, which will see it launch direct flights between the Maldives and India.

MEGA Maldives Airlines is only the second airline based in the Maldives that has been awarded the permit to operate flights, and follows on from the airline’s success in operating flights between China and the Maldives.

Being in such close proximity to the Maldives, the growing Indian market is deemed to be extremely important to the country’s tourism sector.

2015 saw the arrivals of tourists from India to the Maldives at just over 50,000, but in 2016 the market has already increased 25%.

The fact that there has not been direct connectivity between the capitals of the two countries in the past, MEGA Maldives Airlines believes that non-stop flights from Delhi to Male’ would further contribute to an increase in tourist arrivals.

It is currently in the process of planning the schedule of flights between Delhi and Male’ and looks forward to announce further details, including the launch date and the fare prices in the very near future.

Since starting up in 2010, MEGA Maldives has seen itself rise up to become the fourth biggest international airlines in the Maldives, and has been working for the welfare of the local community as well.

That's great! Which aircraft will they use and what will be the frequency?

This will increase tourist traffic between the two countries.

Is there enough demand to support wide body aircraft operation?

As mentioned in a CAPA report of 2014, Delhi could be a viable low frequency wide body route.

Mega Maldives Airlines to launch Delhi-Male direct flights

November 4, 2016

Entering the Indian market, Mega Maldives Airlines will start direct flights connecting the national capital and Male this month as the carrier looks to tap the growth potential in tourism. Besides, the private carrier from Maldives will start direct flights between Mumbai and Male next month and is also in talks with some Indian carriers for possible partnerships. Announcing the launch here today, Mega Maldives Airlines said it will operate three direct flights every week starting from the national capital on November 15.

‘Mega Maldives Airlines’ founder and CEO George Weinmann said the response has been positive from both countries for the new services. The carrier will have flights from the national capital to Male on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday while the services from Male will be on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. “India is one of the largest growing economies in Asia and is right on the doorstep of Maldives. Maldives has a long relationship with India in business and tourism. Our job as an airline is to connect people and connect the markets. That is what we are going to do,” he said.

It will be operating Boeing 737-800 aircraft with a configuration of 12 business class and 156 economy class seats. As an inaugural offer, Mega Maldives Airlines is providing round-trip economy class ticket at Rs 22,900. “During January-August this year, there has been 21.4 percent increase in Indian tourist inflows into Maldives. I think it is quite a good moment for an airline to start direct connections,” Maldives Ambassador, Ahmed Mohamed said. According to the airline, over 52,000 Indian tourists arrived in Maldives last year and the numbers are growing at over 20 per cent annually.

Weinmann said the carrier expects to start direct flights connecting Mumbai and Male next month. Discussions are also going on with Indian airlines for possible partnership, he said, adding that it would be too early to provide further details.
