Jet Airways may offer internet on board

Aug 17, 2016

Jet Airways may soon offer internet on its aircraft. As of now, no Indian carrier — including Air India and Jet which operate long haul international routes also — give flyers the option of Wi-Fi enabled aircraft.

Jet is "examining the options and cost involved" in having Wi-Fi on its planes, said a senior official. "Installing Wi-Fi on planes was an expensive proposition till recently. With technology now getting less expensive and more service providers available, the costs have come down. We are considering some options available to us," said a source.

The airline said it will not be able to give any more details as of now like by when will they be able to offer internet to passengers; whether it will be on long international flights or even domestic ones; how much will the proposed installation cost and whether it will be paid or free service for its guests.

Jet Airways defers Boeing 787 induction

August 17, 2016

Jet Airways has deferred the induction of Boeing 787 aircraft due from 2017-end as it aims to limit wide body capacity addition and consolidate its business.

As per the original plan, Jet was expected to receive the first of the ten Boeing 787 on order from last quarter of 2017 but now the airline management has pushed back the induction.

"At Jet Airways we continuously review our fleet and network strategy. We are currently upgrading capacity on key international routes by deploying the six Boeing 777 aircraft which are returning from lease. A decision on the induction of additional wide body aircraft will be based on the outcome of the review," a Jet Airways spokesperson said in an emailed response.

The spokesperson did not state when the airline will start receiving the 787s but a source indicated it is likely to receive them from 2019. A Boeing spokesperson did not immediately respond to the query on the topic.

Jet Airways ordered ten Boeing 787 aircraft in 2006. Its original order was for the 787-8 varaint (flown by Air India) but later the airline converted it to the bigger variant (787-9) which has a longer range and higher seat capacity (290 in a standard two class configuration). The 787-9 has a list price of $ 264.6 million.

Jet Airways continues its international expansion spree in the Winter, with Kozhikode-Sharjah to be launched eff 30OCT.

9W208 CCJ2125 - 2355SHJ 73H D

9W207 SHJ1500 - 2025CCJ 73H D

These timings suggest that 9W will add another India-Sharjah flight in the near future, possibly Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram or Chennai.

This addition seems to be 9W capitalizing on the availability of slots and bilateral rights to seal its position in the UAE sector.

Still nothing online - and I know for a fact this plane is in active service. Shocked

Yeah, no logs of it anywhere Jishnu. Like VT-SLE from Spicejet.

VT-JTD, delivered to 9W on July 25, leased from AerCap, is the former YJ-AV1 with Air Vanuatu.

The second of the Etihad leased 777s has been returned to Jet Airways. The airframe in question is A6-JAC; the former VT-JEA/VT-JEN.
She has been re-re-registered, and very aptly so, as VT-JET.

So summarize :

VT-JEA -> To Thai as HS-TKG -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEN -> To Turkish as VT-JEN -> To Etihad as VT-JEN -> To Etihad as A6-JAC -> To Jet Airways as VT-JET

Jet Airways starts video streaming, to launch Wi-Fi soon

Sep 02 2016

Jet Airways India Ltd has started streaming audio and video content to passengers' laptops and mobile on its flights from Friday and will offer Wi-Fi soon.

"Streaming of content on personal devices has become extremely popular globally, and we are confident that this initiative will appeal to all our guests especially the millennials who prefer to access content on the move,” Gaurang Shetty, director of Jet Airways, said in a statement.

The service named Jet Screen will be available free on all domestic flights; it offers 220 hours of video and audio content such as Hollywood and Indian movies, TV shorts, music of multiple genres and interactive games as well as special children’s programmes.

In order to access the onboard entertainment, guests will need to download the ‘Airtime Player’ application, available for free in all major App stores, on their Wi-Fi enabled personal devices.

Once the application is installed, guests must switch their devices to ‘Airplane Mode’ and select ‘JetScreen’ as their wireless network of choice. Once connected, launching the web browser enables access to the in-flight entertainment portal.

The airline will also launch Wi-Fi soon.

The introduction of streaming is the first step in Jet Airways’ plan to eventually transform its in-flight entertainment experience into a fully-fledged, broadband-enabled Wi-Fi connectivity (subject to regulatory approvals), which will allow passengers access to a range of services such as internet surfing, e-mail, social media, connecting flight information, instant messaging, real time travel services and destination deals, Jet said.

The aviation ministry last week said a decision to allow Wi-Fi onboard aircraft is expected in 10 days.

Aviation secretary R.N. Choubey said the matter has been taken up with other government departments and “good news” is likely soon.

The services are not allowed currently due to security concerns over data infringement.

International airlines shut off WI-FI when flying over Indian airspace.

Jet is the first Indian airline to launch audio and video streaming, Vistara plans to start a similar system onboard soon, the airline has said in the past.

Yes, bala

I vaguely recall saying "9W wouldn't launch TRV-DXB" around the time they axed in TRV-SHJ - I stand corrected Smile

What is going on with Jet's Paris flight? Has it been canceled or is it switching to a night departure from BOM rather than the 11am departure? Also is the AF code share gone? Really sad to see the 11am departure go. Was a great sky team way to leave BOM when you didn't want to fly in the middle of the night. Gave some options

Jet Airways to arm Boeing 737 pilots with tablets to reduce paperwork in cockpit

Sep 14, 2016

Jet Airways will provide its pilots across its Boeing 737 fleet with iPads loaded with applications to do performance calculations, view en-route and terminal charts, refer documents and checklists in digital format, thereby reducing paper in the cockpit.

"The airline had already made the move to a 'less paper' cockpit from 2007 onwards. Its B777-300ER aircraft are fitted with an 'electronic flight bag,' which contains all the route maps, charts, aircraft manuals and associated paperwork in a digital format. The introduction of the iPad on the airline's B737 fleet, however, will make it even more convenient for pilots to access key flight information, and in greater detail than ever before," the airline said, while claiming it will be "one of the first airlines in India to issue iPads to all its pilots across its Boeing 737 fleet".

The airline has already trained 500 crew to operate the iPad as part of the first phase of the switch, with the rest to make the transition in a systematic manner over the next six to eight months.

Jet's senior VP (operations) Captain, Nikhil Ved, said: "At Jet Airways, we pride ourselves on pushing the boundaries of innovation. That extends as much to the flight deck, as it does to guest-focused initiatives. With the introduction of the iPad, we're giving our pilots the tools to operate the aircraft more efficiently, safely and sustainably, all of which add up towards ensuring an even more exceptional flying experience for our guests."

The iPads will come pre-loaded with documents and performance charts that pilots normally have to fill out as well as an on-board performance tool allowing them to gauge the aircraft's operating parameters with extreme accuracy.

http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/jet-airways-plans-to-restart-us-flights-116092101071_1.html

Jet Airways plans to restart US flights

Jet Airways is planning resume its US flights to capitalise on high demand on the India-US routes and grow its international operations. Jet Airways pulled out of the US market late March when it stopped its Mumbai-Brussels-Newark flight. It is now evaluating both a non-stop and an one stop service between India and New York.

At present Air India and United operate non stop flights between India and the US and if it indeed Jet Airways goes ahead with a non stop flight to the US it will be its first. "As a network carrier with international operations, Jet Airways constantly evaluates opportunities in order to offer greater connectivity to its guests. Any specific addition to the network will be communicated at the appropriate time," an airline spokesperson said in an emailed response. Sources say the airline is considering engineering modification or reconfiguration to some of its Boeing 777 aircraft in order to fly non stop from India to New York with an optimal load.

Recently, Air India announced increasing its frequency of its non stop Delhi-San Francisco flight to six times a week. Air India flies non stop to New York, Newark and Chicago and is also planning to introduce a service to Washington. United flies non stop from Newark to Delhi and Mumbai.

Jet Airways offers US connection through its code share partners over Abu Dhabi (Etihad), Amsterdam (Delta) and London (United) but does not have its own service.

Jet has a market share of over 14 per cent of India's foreign air traffic the highest amongst all carriers and international operations contribute to around half of its revenue. Jet Airways deploys Airbus A330 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on its long haul routes to Europe and Canada. This year Jet is inducting six Boeing 777s in its fleet upon the end of lease terms with Etihad and the aircraft are now being deployed on Dubai, Singapore and Amsterdam routes.

Kapil Kaul, CEO (South Asia) of industry consultancy CAPA said the return of Boeing 777s to Jet Airways signals the possible revival of airline's long haul ambitions. Kaul believes Jet will operate to the US via Amsterdam. " I see a possible reset in Jet-Etihad partnership and see new alignments emerging. Amsterdam hub will be a key for Jet's North American operations."

Jet was supposed to introduce flights to New York, Chicago and Newark via Abu Dhabi as a part of the commercial co-operation agreement it signed with Etihad in 2013. But instead of launching own flights, Jet leased its Boeing 777 aircraft to Etihad and the same were used on Etihad flights to New York and San Francisco.

A nonstop will only work if they have full cooperation and FF integration with a US airline. Jet should just JV with Delta/AF/KLM already and start JFK-BOM nonstop. They also need to start EWR-AMS as Delta's flight does not connect well with the Jet flight (during half the year or so). Other than these two US flights, I think Jet could maybe do SFO-AMS-BLR. But that's it. Leave the rest of the US flying to Delta/KLM/AF.

Another Etihad leased 777 has been returned to Jet Airways. The airframe in question is A6-JAB; the former VT-JED/VT-JER.
She has been re-re-registered as VT-JEU.

To summarize :

VT-JED -> To Turkish as TC-JJA -> To Thai as HS-TKS -> To Jet Airways as VT-JER -> To Etihad as A6-JAB -> To Jet Airways as VT-JEU

Similarly, the new schedule will offer passengers convenient connections over Paris to Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, San Francisco, Washington, Vancouver, Montréal and Mexico City in North America.

Gaurang Shetty, Whole-time Director, Jet Airways, said, “We are pleased that the revised schedule now provides our guests greater choice over Paris to destinations in North America and Europe.”

Jet Airways announces new flight schedule to Paris

Sept 22

Effective October 30, 2016, flight 9W 124 from Mumbai to Paris will depart at 0250 hrs IST and arrive at 0820 hrs local time, while on the return leg, 9W 123, will depart Paris at 1130 hrs local time and land in Mumbai at 0045 hrs IST the following day.

As a result of the revised timings, passengers will now be able to connect to 25 European and more than 10 North American cities over Paris.

So this maps almost exactly with AF's flight. Also AF seems to have dropped their code on the 9W flight to CDG (it had it on the old flight, and the Jet flight would come up as an option for flights on their website). Do people think this is step on of AF exiting BOM? I really hope not. Also I hope 9W was in a JV with AF/DL/KL. Jet's other flight was a great way to leave BOM at a sane time and reach JFK in the evening. the ME3 give pax options. I think every major alliance needs to offer this at least to BOM & DEL.

A French newspaper reports that Jet Airways is seriously seeking to launch Chennai-Paris CDG & Bengaluru-Amsterdam in partnership with DL-KL-AF sometime in 2017...

Apparently the flavour of the month is AF-KL-DL! Very Happy

Delta, Air France-KLM extend partnership with Jet Airways through Paris and Amsterdam

Following the success of the codeshare agreement launched in March 2016, Delta Air Lines and joint venture partner Air France-KLM will enhance their existing co-operation with India’s Jet Airways. The expanded agreement adds new convenient travel options for customers flying from North America via Paris-Charles de Gaulle to India, complementing the current service offered through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Effective Oct. 30, and subject to government approvals, Delta customers flying from the United States and Europe will be able to connect onto Jet Airways’ flights to Mumbai from Paris; and to New Delhi and Mumbai from Amsterdam. From here customers can then fly to 20 destinations within India.

Nat Pieper.jpg
Nat Pieper Executive Headshot
“Delta’s co-operation with Jet Airways has been a great success and has opened up significant new service options via Amsterdam for the 11,000 passengers flying between North America and the Indian subcontinent each day,” said Nat Pieper, Delta’s Senior Vice President - Europe, Middle East, Africa and India. “The expansion of the codesharing across our European hubs is the next step in deepening our cooperation with Jet Airways and building strong links with the Indian market.”
"The extension of the services with Jet Airways and Delta Air Lines will enable Air France-KLM’s customers to travel more easily and with the best possible services via our two powerful European hubs, between Europe, India and North America." said Pieter Bootsma, Executive Vice President - Commercial Strategy of Air France-KLM.

Highlights of the expanded agreement are:

More destinations within India

Subject to government approvals, Delta’s customers connecting through Paris and Amsterdam to Mumbai and New Delhi will have codeshare access to 20 onward destinations in India served by Jet Airways. After government approvals, new Delta codeshare destinations will include Calicut, Coimbatore, Goa, Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mangalore, Pune, Trivandrum and Vadodara.
Existing Delta destinations available through the Jet Airways codeshare are: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi.

Air France-KLM customers departing from Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam-Schiphol currently have access to 10 codeshare destinations across India such as, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

New connectivity through Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport

With the expanded codeshare, Delta customers will be able to connect onto Jet Airways’ flights to Mumbai over Paris as well as onward to several destinations within India.

In turn, Jet Airways will codeshare on Delta’s complete offering from and to 13 destinations in North America via Paris-Charles de Gaulle namely Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Minneapolis, Newark, New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, Salt Lake City and Seattle.

Jet Airways will also, subject to government approvals, codeshare on Air France’s flights to 12 destinations in North America, including: Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Washington in the U.S.; Vancouver and Montreal, Canada; and Mexico City, Mexico.

Once complete, Jet Airways will codeshare to 21 North American gateways operated by Air France and Delta. Jet Airways will also continue to codeshare on Air France operated flights to 28 European destinations beyond Paris.

Expanded codeshare agreement through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Jet Airways will codeshare to nine additional points between North America to Amsterdam operated by Delta and KLM, bringing the total to 19 points. The additional destinations include: Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Miami, Minneapolis, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Mexico City, Mexico.

Subject to government approvals, Jet Airways will also codeshare to 10 cities within the U.S. operated from and to Delta’s U.S. hubs to the following destinations – Austin, Charlotte, Columbus, Denver, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis and Tampa. Jet Airways will also continue to codeshare on KLM-operated flights to 30 European destinations beyond Amsterdam.

Full Frequent Flyer Mileage Reciprocity

Air France-KLM Flying Blue members are already eligible to earn and redeem miles on all routes operated by Jet Airways and vice versa. Soon, Delta SkyMiles and Jet Airways’ Jet Privilege members will also enjoy network-wide, reciprocal mileage earning and redemption privileges.

So do we think AF will stop BOM-CDG and let 9W fly the route? I really hope not. Now all the French and Indian govts need to do is have some type of humane irregular operations system where indian citizens are not forced to sleep at CDG when flights get delayed. If they solve this and have agents more sympathetic to the indian mentality, I think they can have CDG and AMS really work as a transfer hub. Btw my last two AF flights form India where met with an indian agent at CDG which is a good step.

I think, unlike Bengaluru-Paris, Mumbai-Paris, being larger in market size, can support 2 carriers on the same route.

Also, lets not forget, KL & 9W fly within an hour of each other on DEL-AMS. So, this seems like 9W adjusting to what the market prefers/wants.

Jet Airways upgauges 9W552/551 Mumbai-Doha-Mumbai and 9W568/567 Delhi-Dammam-Delhi to Airbus A330-200, while upgauging 9W564/563 Mumbai-Dammam-Mumbai to Airbus A330-300 eff W16

From the same date - 9W will decrease Mumbai/Delhi-Dammam & Mumbai-Doha to daily, while increasing Doha-Thiruvananthapuram to daily once again.

As of now, what the system shows (post 15 Jan 2017), lets reconcile first and speculate later.

330-200
4X in fleet presently

JWP JWQ JWW JWV

3X with TK on long lease.
2X with AZ (probably sold off)
1X with JU (100% sold off)

330-200 utilization as per system

1X BOM MAA/JED
1X BOM BKK/DOH
1X BOM HKG
2X DEL HKG/SIN/DMM
1X BOM CDG

330-300
4x in the fleet

JWR JWS JWT JWU

330-300 Utilizaiton as per system

1X BOM DEL CCU DEL BOM DMM BOM

777-300ER
7X in the fleet presently, 3 more expected

VT-JEH VT-JEK VT-JEM VT-JEQ VT-JES VT-JET VT-JEU [A6-JAD A6-JAE A6-JAF]

777-300ER Utilization as per system

3X BOM/DEL LHR
3X BOM/DEL AMS YYZ
2X BOM SIN/DXB

Utilization of

6 332s
1 333
8 77Ws

Ideally

2X DEL SIN/HKG/DMM - 333
1X BOM CDG - 333
1X BOM HKG 777-300ER

The 332 fleet is not going to grow any further, so shifting these 3 to 333 operations and BOM HKG to 777-300ER, balances the 332 fleet with an op spare, but then if they indeed plan the JV with AF KL then they'd be needing 1 more 332 free for MAA CDG and HYD or BLR AMS, implying another rotation being pushed onto the 77Ws, which would already have 2X BOM SIN and 1X BOM DXB.

Interesting times indeed.
