Air Serbia has been awarded a Foreign Air Carrier's Permit by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) in time for the carrier's launch of direct flights to the United States later this year.

As it stands, Air Serbia is now permitted to operate scheduled and chartered passenger and cargo flights between Serbia and the US as well as points behind the Republic of Serbia, via the Republic of Serbia, and intermediate points to a point or points in the United States and beyond.

As previously reported, Air Serbia will commence 5x weekly nonstop flights between Belgrade and New York JFK with effect from June 23. Operations are on-board an ex-Jet Airways A330-200 on lease from Etihad Airways.

Jet Airways More Interested in Codeshare Pacts Than Global Clubs

March 21, 2016

Jet Airways today indicated it was more interested in stitching partnerships with other international carriers through codeshare pacts than joining any of the three global clubs and said its new European gateway Amsterdam offers stronger proposition over Brussels.

"I work with partners. For me bilaterally is the way that this airline has always grown. And we work with all the airlines across all the three alliances. They have partners with Star (Alliance), OneWorld and Sky Team. All of them are our partners. And they work bilaterally," Jet Airways Whole-Time Director Guarang Shetty told reporters here.

"It is all about being bilateral where there is branding, it is not about conflict. It is about offering choice (to passengers). For me it is all about choice," he said.

He said the strategic partnership with KLM and Delta Air Lines will offer one stop codeshare access to 30 destinations across Europe and 11 destinations in the US and Canada.

KLM and Delta are significant players in the US, Canada and Europe, Shetty said, adding, "very clearly there is an added advantage in terms of foot print and deliveries."

The strategic codeshare partnerships with KLM and Delta will enable Jet Airways to offer wider access, unmatched connectivity and seamless travel from India to key destinations in Europe and North America, he said.

Schedules of all three flights have been planned to allow quick, convenient and seamless connections between India and Toronto via Amsterdam, the airline said.

"With this new partnership with Jet Airways we are happy to join hands in order to extend our services to more customers all over the world. Together with our Joint Venture partner Delta we will transfer passengers smoothly and swiftly between three continents and via KLM's home base Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, thus expanding choice and connectivity for our customers," KLM general manager for Indian sub-continent Max Smits said.

"This new agreement with Jet Airways and KLM provides a direct link between India and the US. These flights enhance connectivity between these two countries, offering one-stop access to leading cities in the US from the India's key hubs," said Jimmy Eichelgruen, Regional Director Sales (Africa, Middle East and Indian subcontinent), Delta Air Lines.

Aviation Ministry asks Jet to return unused Sharjah bilateral

March 21, 2016

The Aviation Ministry has asked the Jet Airways to return the unused bilateral on Sharjah sector as it was not utilising its quota of seats and flights even as other airlines were seeking to increase their flights to the Gulf city.

Out of the 5,000 seats allocated to Jet Airways in a week, the airline is utilising 3,000 seats. Of the five flights allocated to the airline to Sharjah, the airline operates only one.

A source in know of the development told Bloomberg TV India that the Aviation Ministry has asked the airline to return the remaining seats in order to facilitate other carriers in need to fly to Sharjah.

The source added that Indigo was one of the players that had approached the Aviation Ministry. Indigo wants to fly to Sharjah eight times in a week from four destinations – Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi and Kozhikode -- in the winter schedule of this year.

The source also pointed out that Indigo wanted to start flying to Sharjah in the summer schedule itself. However, the plan was stalled due to unavailability of seats.

What a load of hooey.

All this does is provide one stop connections from BOM and DEL via AMS. And with no Jet metal to the United States anymore unless there's something in the works for a Jet coded and operated flight to EWR via AUH.

Many Indian pax don't like the service standards provided by DL/KL, and both these airlines are unlikely to have Indian language speaking crew onboard. I guess the only option left is AI. They may be Air Babu-Mantri run by clueless clerks with no sense of service standards, but at least they're moving in the right direction. Jet is totally lost.

Q. Do you plan to induct more aircraft into your fleet?

A. I think the next induction will be the 787-9 sometime in 2017.

I agree. The partnership should have been stronger. Full FF partnership and 9W flying to some key destinations in the US (at least EWR and SFO). The one good thing is my guess 9W will see some boast on their AMS-India flights. Btw the 9W EY US flights which were supposed to be EY flying one frequency and 9W flying the other (to say JFK and SFO) and then changed to 9W wet leased with the US FAA thingy and now are going totally away (read no 9W metal to the US). How is this good for 9W??? Also how can India's most premium airline not be able to fly to EWR and SFO in the US???? Makes zero sense and makes zero sense that airline partners do not think a portion of the indian market prefers to fly with indian carriers. I think its a big fail for indian aviation. If Vistara's strategy is to route everything through SIN, god help indian aviation.

Snag forces Jet airways to cancel recovery flight

Mar 25, 2016

A snag in one of the Jet Airways aircraft forced the airline to cancel its recovery flight to fly some of the stranded passengers from Amsterdam to Mumbai today.

The airline had earlier announced to fly three flights, one each to Mumbai, Delhi and Toronto from Amsterdam today to fly its passengers, who were stuck at in Brussels due to the deadly terror attack on the airport and metro station in the Belgian capital on Tuesday.

"Due to a technical issue with one of the aircraft, Jet Airways has combined its flights from Amsterdam to Mumbai and Delhi. The airline is now operating a single flight which will fly from Amsterdam to Delhi and then proceed onward to Mumbai," the airline said in a late evening statement.

Jet Airways flight for Mumbai from Amsterdam was scheduled to depart at 1400 hours (local time). Now the passengers who were bound for Mumbai will fly to their destination via Delhi, it said.

The schedule for Jet Airways flights from Amsterdam to Toronto, however, remains unchanged, it said.

Jet Airways starts pulling out grounded planes from Brussels

Mar 24, 2016

Jet Airways on Thursday started pulling out its grounded planes from terror-hit Brussels with the first aircraft landing at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport at around 1630 hours (Indian time).

This aircraft will operate the airline's first batch of hundreds of its passengers, who were stranded in the Belgian capital since Tuesday. The airline has already announced that it will operate today three recovery flights to fly the stranded passengers.

"Jet Airways has started the process of flying its aircraft out of Brussels as part of the recovery operations. The first aircraft landed in Amsterdam at 1200 hours (local time) from Brussels as a ferry flight," a Jet Airways spokesperson said.

According to a source, four Jet Airways planes were grounded at the Brussels airport after the authorities decided to shut the operations in the wake of the blasts.

While three of these aircraft will fly with passengers, the fourth one is expected to fly empty to New Delhi, the source said.

The airline had evacuated all stranded passengers from Brussels yesterday in 15 special coaches and transported them to Amsterdam by road facilitate their journey to Mumbai, Delhi and Toronto.

The airline had earlier announced the first recovery flight, 9W 1227, will depart from Amsterdam for Mumbai at 1400 hours (local time) while the one for New Delhi (9W 1229) will depart at 1600 hours (local time).

Besides, Jet Airways is also operating a recovery flight (9W 1230) to Toronto from Amsterdam, which will leave the Dutch capital at 1800 hours, according to the spokesperson.

The Mumbai-based airline, however, did not give the number of flyers who were stuck at the Brussels airport due to the blasts, which left over 30 people killed and several injured including two crew members of Jet Airways.

Amsterdam will become Jet Airways European gateway for its international operations from Saturday.

As of now Brussels airport, which is closed even today for passenger flights, continues to serve as Jet Airways' hub for overseas operations for Europe and beyond.

http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/bomb-threat-in-kathmandu-delhi-bound-jet-airways-flight/

Nearly 170 people onboard a Jet Airways flight from Delhi had to be evacuated at Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday after authorities received a threat about a bomb on the plane, briefly halting flight operations.
An unidentified person made a call to the airport authorities saying that explosives have been planted onboard the Jet Airways Flight 260 that took off from New Delhi in the afternoon.
Shortly after the aircraft with 169 people including crew landed at the airport at around 4:30 pm, the passengers were safely evacuated.

Search operations were carried out inside the aircraft which was taken to the isolation area.
Security personnel conducted a thorough check of the plane after a threat alarm was communicated to Jet Airways office in Kathmandu Delhi, officials said.
There was panic in the airport as soon as the news was spread.
However, after the inspection was complete, the bomb threat turned to be a hoax. No explosives were found inside the aircraft.
“We had carried a thorough investigation of all the baggage, passengers and aircraft seats, where noting was found,” a senior official at the airport said.
Passengers were safely evacuated from the Jet Airways after it touched down at the airport here.
All domestic as well as international flights were suspended for about an hour due to the incident.
The airport authorities gave the all clear signal at 5.30 pm (local time) after going through necessary investigations.
Earlier, the Jet Airways plane had experienced difficulty in landing due to poor visibility in Kathmandu. The aircraft had to make six rounds above Simara in Bara before making an emergency landing following the bomb threat alert, Himalayan Times reported.

Jet Airways has also filed for 2nd daily services on both Mumbai-Dammam and Delhi-Dammam with the DGCA.

If this materializes, Dammam will be the 3rd largest International market for 9W in terms of frequencies behind Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Jet to hire over 50 Foreign pilots

April 3, 2016

Jet Airways is in the process of hiring over 50 expat pilots to fly its widebody B-777 planes, with six of these aircraft, currently on lease to Abu Dhabi- based Etihad Airways, are expected to start returning to the Indian carrier's fleet from June.

Jet Airways, the second largest domestic carrier by market share, plans to deploy these long-haul planes to destinations like Amsterdam, Paris and Toronto, when they come back from Abu Dhabi, by replacing the existing wide-body Airbus A330s which currently service these foreign cities.

"Jet Airways has already started the process of hiring some 50-odd foreign pilots to operate these B777s when six such planes return to the carrier from Etihad,"said officials close to development .

As of now, the Mumbai-based airline has only been hiring expat pilots for narrow body B737 planes which account for almost two-thirds of its total fleet, they said, adding, "Jet Airways is inducting foreign pilots for wide-body planes after a hiatus of more than two years."

Jet Airways, which at present has over 80 foreign pilots working for it, had earlier planned to do away with them in a phased manner, keeping in view the government's deadline of December 2016 for the Indian carriers.

It had even prematurely terminated the service contracts of 50 of these pilots in fiscal 2015 with a view to reduce cost as well as bring down their number.

Jet Airways may return to Vijayawada in W16 or 01JAN17, as 9W's schedules list a 2 daily Hyderabad-Vijayawada, and a 2 daily Chennai-Vijayawada starting 01JAN17.

It looks to be a single ATR rotation doing - MAA-VGA-HYD-VGA-MAA-VGA-HYD-VGA-MAA.

More information may come as days pass.

IIRC, it used to be a single daily 737, BOM-HYD-VGA and a seperate ATR BLR-VGA.

Jet plans to hire 400 pilots in 18 months

Apr 21, 2016

With domestic traffic growing at over 20% and competition in the full service carrier (FSC) segment heating up, Jet Airways has decided to increase the utilisation of Boeing 737 aircraft that are used for flights within India and to neighbouring countries. For this, the Naresh Goyal-promoted airline will hire 400 pilots in the next 18 months so that it has the manpower required to sweat its assets optimally.

In the past few months, Jet and several other Indian airlines had seen a sizeable number of their pilots go to IndiGo and Gulf carriers. To check further exodus, Jet has given an average 10% salary hike to pilots recently. "We currently have 1,600 pilots for the four types of aircraft in our fleet - the single aisle turboprops and B-737s and the widebody Boeing 777 and Airbus A-330. We will be hiring up to 300 pilots for our single aisle fleet by the end of this year and in 18 months we plan to hire another 100 pilots. They will all be Indians," Jet's chief people officer Rahul Taneja told TOI. He added that the airline will promote 100 first officers or co-pilots as commanders.

Jet currently has a fleet of 116 planes. Last November, it ordered 75 B-737 MAX-8 aircraft, which is Boeing's answer to Airbus' highly successful A-320 Neo. This order includes conversions of 25 next-generation 737s to 737 MAX 8s, as well a s options and purchase rights for additional 50 aircraft. However, this will not lead to fleet expansion as the new planes will be used to replace Jet's old aircraft. In fact, the airline is expected to place a big order for planes using its new-found economies of scale with equity partner Etihad.

"We are hiring more pilots to be able to optimally utilize our aircraft and increase their productivity. The additional manpower will help us continue to offer the best possible work-life balance to our valuable employees," Taneja said.

Aren't 6 77Ws coming back to Jet this summer?

What are they going to do with them? Run them on busy domestic trunk routes like JL and NH do?

Plan is to upgauge all AMS routes permanently on the 77W, leaving the 333s/332s to pick up regional SIN/DXB flying, which in turn will free up some 73Hs for increasing domestic flights.

That's great. While I really like their F product, I hope they rip it out given KLM doesn't offer F and Jet really shouldn't either. I think a real premium econ section would be perfect for their 77W especially since Delta is soon to launch one. Btw how does 9W feel about Delta's EWR-AMS schedule. Depending on the season, there is a HUGE connecting time on the flight from India-AMS-EWR? Is the plan to have 9W resume AMS-EWR? Otherwise Delta is really hurting 9W in the #1 India-USA market. Seems so strange. Btw the Delta EWR-CDG connects great to the AF India flights in both directions but that doesn't help 9W.

Ladder rams into plane; repair will cost crores

Apr 23, 2016

A Jet Airways tow truck operator at Kolkata airport rammed a step ladder into the rear wing of a stationary aircraft, causing damages running into crores and grounding the plane for at least a week. The driver, hired on contractual basis, has been dismissed.

This is the second major mishap involving a Jet Airways vehicle. In December, a Jet Airways passenger coach driver had wrecked an Air India plane. The driver had then fallen asleep at the wheel.

Thursday's accident occurred around 9 pm, shortly after the plane from Mumbai touched down at Kolkata airport. After the aircraft rolled into parking bay no. 53 to connect to the aero-bridge, the tow vehicle waiting in the apron area with the step ladder began to roll into position. While passengers disembark and board the aircraft through the aero bridge, that is attached to the front door, the step ladder is used by airline ground staff like houseke eping staff and se cu rity personnel to prepare the aircraft for the next flight. The particular plane was scheduled to fly to Mumbai around 9.20 pm.

According to the set procedure, the vehicle guided by a ground staff stopped short of the aircraft with adequate gap between the ladder head and the aircraft door..

At this point, the ground staff is supposed to detatch the ladder from the tow truck. The truck then moves away and the ladder is gently pushed into position by men on the ground and locked.

On Thursday though, the driver suddenly took off before the ladder had been removed. As it headed tried to pass under the rear fuselage of the Boeing B 737-800 aircraft, the steel frame of the ladder canopy crashed into the tail wing. The impact ripped a portion of the tail wing that acts as the plane's horizontal stabilizer.

The driver claimed that he heard a noise and presumed the ladder had been detached. He then drove forward. It was only when he heard the crash and the shudder that he realized the mistake.

"A breath analyser test was done and the driver was clean. He had not followed a standard operating procedure that required him to look back and confirm that the ladder had indeed been detached," an airline source said. The driver has been taken off the airline roster, said an official.

A Boeing engineer is on the way to assess the impact and check if it has caused structural damage to the plane. Sources said the plane will stay grounded for at least a week and cost of repair will run into several crores. At least five-seven flights that the aircraft did daily will now have to be either combined or cancelled for a few days.

Jet Airways to spend $3 million on first ad campaign in 9 years

May 04 2016

Jet Airways (India) Ltd is spending $3 million on an ad campaign, its first in nine years, to wrest market share from low-cost airlines such as Indigo (InterGlobe Aviation) and SpiceJet.

The campaign, titled “Get More At Affordable Fares, Guaranteed”, has been created by Cheil India Pvt. Ltd.

Jet claims that for a mere Rs.200-300 more, passengers can avail the services that low-cost airlines do not offer.

“If you break down additional services offered by Jet Airways as a full service airline, the value attached is much more. Typically, a Jet Airways passenger tends to save $3 in terms of food and beverages, $6 by accumulating frequent miles and $11 in terms of lounge access compared to a low-fare airline,” said Colin Neubronner, senior vice-president (sales and marketing) at Jet Airways. Low-cost airlines charge separately for food and Lounge access and most do not run frequent flyer programmes.

The Naresh Goyal-founded Jet Airways, in which Etihad Airways PJSC of Abu Dhabi has a 24% stake, last rolled out a campaign of similar magnitude in 2007 when the airline started taking delivery of wide-bodied planes for its international operations. Jet has experimented with several models including a low-cost variant before deciding to return to its original one of being a full service airline.

According to Mark D. Martin, founder and chief executive officer of Martin Consulting Llc., a US-based aviation consulting firm, the re-launch of Jet Airways campaign could mark a second coming for the airline

“The re-launch of Jet Airways falls in line with Etihad’s global strategy, which is to reinforce the local partner to establish its supremacy in the domestic market, while Etihad will focus on the global network from Abu Dhabi. We may also expect Etihad to rebrand Jet Airways, its entire fleet, livery, cabin format and crew as was done with Italian carrier Alitalia recently, a step which helped with winning back the consumer and the traveller.”

The move could also help Jet fight off competition from other full-service airlines including Tata SIA’s Vistara, Martin added.

Check in India: Jet hires AI, saves $11 million

May 7, 2016

For the first time in Indian aviation history, another carrier has roped in Air India's engineering services to check its fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft. And this unprecedented collaboration between Jet Airways and AI has yielded a savings of $11million (Rs 70 crore) that Jet would have incurred in sending the aircrafts to maintenance facilities abroad.

From April 16 on, Jet's first Boeing 777 aircraft has been undergoing extensive checks at Air India's Mumbai servicing facility that are expected to last a month. Till now, Jet sent its aircraft to Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi spending up to Rs 7 lakh an hour on fuel costs alone.

Confirming that it had entered into a contract with Air India Engineering Services Ltd (AIESL), a Jet Airways spokesperson said, "The deal will bring in a lot of cost efficiency for Jet. Since it is being done locally, the payment is in rupees thus bringing down costs." That's not all the cost-cutting that's in place - the checks usually require about 6,000 man hours in all. Officials at Jet Airways disclosed that Air India is charging $35 per man hour against the average international price of $55. "For us the savings are on fuel, sending 10-15 personnel along with the aircraft and organising logistics," a Jet official said.

HR Jagannathan, CEO of AIESL told Mirror, "We have already received the first aircraft and the work involved includes a C check, which requires a large majority of the aircraft's components to be inspected after certain specified hours of actual flight hours. It is a full package."

Besides the C check, Air India's engineers are also carrying out a complete landing gear change, working on its fuel tanks, wing flaps and strengthening the floor board. AIESL is providing complete aircraft-on-ground support for the operation.

As per the requirements of aircraft manufacturers, a C Check is performed approximately either every 20 to 24 months, or after a specific amount of actual flight hours, or as defined by the manufacturer itself. Given that it is the first such third-party trial done by AIESL, a team from the Jet Airways engineering department is also overseeing the job. "On-time delivery and ensuring a quality work product are the two main mantras for Air India's engineers," Jagannathan said.

The 777 is a wide-body aircraft that operates on flights to European airports like Paris and Amsterdam as well as Newark in the United States. AIESL has already initiated the approval process from the respective international aviation regulators.

"The US' Federal Aviation Administration has already approved our maintenance base. We have their approvals for a Boeing 777 base job and line-maintenance," Jagannathan said, adding that they were looking at obtaining the same approvals from European Aviation Safety Agency.

Connects to QF's Australian bank both ways (BNE, MEL, SYD), GA's CGK flights, and 3K's (JetStar Asia) interline network. The aircraft doesn't do anything much apart from that.

W.R.T 9W's international network, connects to CMB both ways. One way connections onto the A330 flight from CDG/AMS/LHR are also possible.

The aircraft was freed up by CDG going 333.

Yes they do have two dailies from BOM and from what i understand, only one has been upgraded to A332. The other one stays at B738. The red-eye flight from BOM to SIN and the morning flight from SIN to BOM remain B738.

The full-service carrier is pondering two options to boost its capacity on Thailand-India routes: raising frequencies and deploying wide-body aircraft with higher seat density.

There is a strong possibility Jet Airways will increase its capacity by introducing Airbus A330 wide-body jets on those routes, said Mr Neubronner.

What will they do with just one aircraft, what happens if it goes tech, also apparently the interior is getting reconfigured, does that mean they are removing Jert's J class seats?

http://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/46225-air-serbia-takes-delivery-of-maiden-widebody

Air Serbia has taken delivery of its first widebody aircraft following the arrival of A330-200 A6-EYC (cn 885) at Belgrade on Wednesday, May 11.

The twinjet will shortly be re-registered as YU-ARA with the Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate before returning to Abu Dhabi Int'l for the final fitment of its interior cabins. Once complete, the aircraft will feature eighteen seats in Business Class and 236 in Economy Class.

As previously reported, the A330, on lease from Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l), will be used to resume direct Belgrade-New York JFK flights on June 23.

Jet Airways plans to enter MRO business

17 May 2016

Jet Airways is looking to enter the domestic aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) market, estimated to be be $800 million in size.

"We are definitely thinking about it (MRO business) and may even form a separate company for it. It should make sense to us. We are keeping an eye on the situation and may take a call accordingly in future," K M Unni, chief operating officer, Jet Airways, said on Monday.

Looks like Etihad finding a home for Jet's B777s & A330s.

http://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/46417-alitalia-to-add-a-maiden-b777-300er-next-year-hogan

Alitalia to add a maiden B777-300(ER) next year - Hogan

Alitalia will add a maiden B777-300(ER) to its fleet next year airline vice chairman and Etihad Airways Group CEO, James Hogan, has said.

The carrier has been analyzing several potential new routes and, in order to match capacity to its expansion plans, will add a new B777-200(ER) - ex-Vietnam Airlines airframe msn 28688 - to the fleet this year with the B777-300(ER) and an extra A330-200 to follow next year. Focus has been placed on markets in North and South America and the Far East, Hogan said.

“We have a view that Alitalia can go to forty long-haul aircraft," he added. “We have access to the aircraft through the partners – whether it is 787s, A350s or recycled A330s. We’ve already placed some aircraft in Alitalia, but we want to ensure we can feed the Italian hubs to improve the load factor and the quality."

Alitalia currently operates fourteen A330-200s (of which two are dry-leased from Etihad), and ten B777-200(ER)s.
