Vistara – What lies ahead?

I generally avoid writing about any airline until they complete about a year in Indian skies. However Vistara was different, I first wrote about them even before they started their operations. (Is Vistara’s rumored seating configuration the right mix?) The article has been relevant every day since then and more so in current times when the airline debates and decides on the change in seating configuration.

In October 2015 I wrote Vistara shifts gears – reworks network, starts lobbying in which I said, “.. the airline probably needs a senior strategy team with experience in handling the complex Indian market..”.

Interestingly, the airline announced appointment of Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor who led the turnaround of Spicejet as its Chief Strategy Officer. Mr. Kapoor is slated to take charge soon.

The airline currently operates with a fleet of 9 A320 aircraft and flies to 12 destinations. A look at the current network, sectors, utilization of Vistara and what lays ahead for the airline.

Very interesting, Sir, very interesting.
Vistara hasn't exactly been on my TODO list for quite some time, given that I have been a bit disappointed with what has been written about the offerings on board, and the services, and more so, reading your in-depth analysis on the airline. Once again, a nice and balanced article, starting with a bit of history, and putting things into perspective.
I guess Ratan Tata is taking some personal interest in the airline, and Sanjiv Kapoor's joining is something most of us see as a great starting point for better times at Vistara.
I have not been a fan of the airline's downvaluation of Economy to make PE sound attractive. No IFE, but no WiFi (yet): hmmm. No power-ports is possibly acceptable as a strategy, with airlines such as SouthWest, which offer charging points at every dedicated SouthWest dedicated boarding gate.
In addition to the graphs and analysis, you pose some really interesting questions at the end: questions we would also love to know the answer to! In due course of time, perhaps...

Thanks a lot for your kind words.

Time will tell how Vistara performs, but atleast they do not comment unlike the other Tata partner airline

Also, they have a plan of their own and not competition centric which will help them grow.

On a 2 hour flight, current smart phones will drain, so using wifi on board and then heading out to work, one would need a power bank / charger / additional battery.

Well put, Sir. With the slight changes at the top in 5I (if at all), things may get better.

Yes Sir, today's smart phones are indeed a challenge. Powerbanks can work for smartphones, but certainly not for laptops, and in the US, trans-con or nearly trans-con flights are also common on SouthWest. I do not know how airlines such as SouthWest will tackle this issue, even though they have only a few variants of one type of aircraft in their fleet. Putting power-ports will mean more than a tweak, from what I hear. Second, SouthWest has captured a bit of the business traffic in the US as well.
I wonder what the best way out will be.
