Garuda plans Mumbai-Bali flights

Airline plans to tap into Indian honeymoon and pilgrimage markets

26th January, 2016

Garuda Indonesia is planning to launch flights connecting Bali with Mumbai.

According to a report by local news site Radar Bali, the national carrier wants to tap into the large Indian honeymoon and Hindu pilgrimage markets, and may operate charter flights in advance of plans for scheduled departures.

“The Indian market has great potential. There are two strong potential markets in India, those undertaking a honeymoon and those on a religious pilgrimage. The middle to upper classes of India are those that generally go on a religious journey to Bali,” Garuda’s commercial director, Handayani, was quoted saying.

Garuda does not currently operate any flights to India, and no airline flies direct between Bali and India. Earlier this month Garuda commenced flights between Bali and Shanghai.

They are indeed planning to launch India service with DEL-CGK and BOM-DPS routes by this year or next year.

I don't know if there is enough traffic for Denpasar but DEL or BOM - Jakarta may succeed.

Aviation experts associated with Indonesia say these routes are unviable and wont happen unless they are forced by govt as political tool.

Indian Passport holders don't need a visa any more to Indonesia so that may be the strategy for launching flights to DPS.

Last year I flew on Garuda from BKK to BOM. The flight was about 75% full in economy. What happens to those flights. I think it originated in Jakarta.

This flight should have been done by Jet. 4X BOM-Jakarta and 3X BOM-Bali all timed to connect with the LHR, AMS, CDG flights (9W, AF, KL). Right now KL flies one-step to both cities but they are night flights on either end. 9W could have offered an alternative timing for their partners.

Absolutely yes. That may have worked really well.

But the ability of India's airlines and their managers to think out of the box has always left a lot to be desired.
