Vistara shifts gears – reworks network, starts lobbying
Vistara – the TATA-SIA Joint Venture is shifting gears rapidly. The airline is making some network changes and has also started playing the game of lobbying like its competition to sustain in one of the fastest growing markets in the world which also sees cut throat competition.
Last week the airline released a report prepared by industry research body CAPA which was commissioned to study the Indian Aviation industry and suggest changes. This week it has rejigged its network adding frequency on Mumbai-Delhi-Mumbai and cancelling Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mumbai flights.
A look at what the airline is up to, its learning curve, network rejig and the CAPA report. _________________ www.networkthoughts.com |

Sir, I actually find it sad that most of spend so much time on the WA group (including Yours Truly) that we do not get time to read, enjoy, savour and comment on, your gems on the main AI.net web group. What a lovely article!
Once again, a very thought-provoking article on what questions commonly go though the minds of people ,who like aviation, but are not much in the thick of it (like Yours Truly).
Thanks to TKMCE's nice write-ups, I am not much more familiar with the role of travel agents in the current scenario, where most of us avgeeks like to book our own tickets from airline websites, or OLTAs.
- In addition to configuration rejigs, I got the point about both frequencies and the network, and the 6E Chennai entry after strengthening their presence at CCU (easier, with IT's exit) and BLR (wasn't possibly that easy, given other strong players, and unlike CCU, the BLR market not exactly being yow-yield, but a difficult one too, for long routes such as DEL-BLR).
- The loads-yield conundrum is always a moot point: for the benefit of laypersons like me, can you explain the BBI-BOM market, and why that may lead to higher yields? True, 9W has exited BBI. AI has its regular decent presence at BBI. What more can Vistara give to the BBI market?
I can understand a bit of LKO-BOM, and perhaps even VNS-BOM as well, but not this one.
- Vistara's AMD pullout was something many of us laypersons had also anticipated, primarily because of Jet's domination over 1. frequency 2. better configured planes 3. loyal support base.
I found the last section of ample interest for two reasons:
- the dig at the SQ-heavy management
- the FIA and an alternate front, for policy changes. Lobbying has its place!
Thanks Sir, for a lovely read, and I look forward to receiving your replies on the points above, as well.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

And they not only cracked but are now dominating it

The market has good demand, lesser competition and since not many options the pricing power is high, you have to fight with just 2-3 carriers and mark your presence unlike a more competitive route where you end up one amongst all

The LKO/VNS - BOM market have a lot of options via DEL as well if not direct but with BBI - the catchment area is larger and BBI-CCU-BOM or BBI-DEL-BOM is not a very feasible option, plus it has little connectivity to other metros unlike LKO/VNS which have umpteen flights to DEL which again has umpteen flights to BOM.
Also Uttar Pradesh has a very dense railway network which helps take a train if not to BOM then to DEL which doesnt fit well with BBI.

So Jet has managed to push I5 from BLR-MAA and UK from BOM-AMD

Sir, thank you for the eye-opener on the BBI market. Your two paragraphs of detailed explanations put the point through very well.
Cheers, Sumantra. |
