I'm loving the Pak-Bangladesh series.

Terrific cricket by the Banga boys. Wiped out Pakistan 3-0 in the ODI series, beat them in the sole T20 and now doing well really well in the first test.

Gotta feel for the Paks. Getting hammered there!

Well said, Sir. Till one point in time, one thought that the only world-class player Bangladesh had ever produced was Shakib, and perhaps Mashrafae, but the new find Soumya, finally-come-of-age quicks Rubel and new man Taskin, Tanim and Imrul doing justice to their talent, with the talented Mushfiqur and Mahmadullah are making quite a combination, with Taijul turning out (pun unintended) a pleasant surprise.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Bangladesh have been playing some really good cricket. They were pretty impressive even during the World Cup, and obviously they are very good at home.

I'm really curious to see how our boys will fare when we tour them later this year.

Of course, it is sad to see the state of Pakistan cricket. A country that has produced such wonderful players in the past is truly down in the dumps now. I hope they don't go the way of the West Indies or Zimbabwe.

Did we jump the gun with regard to Bangladesh? I just hope not, since the other test just saw some familiar deficiencies crop up, and the team turning up a cropper against a resurgent Pakistan. However, no one can doubt the overall improvement in the Bangladesh side.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Taking Bangladesh lightly would be a serious mistake, the results of the second test notwithstanding.

Pakistan were saved because their stalwarts Azhar Ali, Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq found legs and Bangladesh were faced with a daunting 500+ run target as a result.

Bangladesh are still a force to reckon with on home ground. India will do well to get their homework right.

Many of us may have missed India's victory over New Zealand in the 4th ODI:
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/872481.html?innings=1;view=commentary
India were staring down the barrel again, needing to win both the remaining matches. Till a grand performance steered them out, in this match.
The match was won by two players, in completely contrasting styles. Mithali Raj was her silken style, with all placement and timing, at that too, at a fast clip. Her unbeaten 81 came of 88 balls. Harmanpreet was the complete opposite. She wasted no time in doing hat she does best: use her immense power to muscle two sixes, and four fours in her 32 off 25 balls. I am glad that the ball-by-ball commentary was available for this match. Harman was everywhere: a superb diving catch, two wickets, and then, not wasting any time by seeing the ball to the boundary as often as she could. As a bowler, she removed Sattherwaite who was batting very well with a fast ball, and took another wicket with a slower one, in the 48th over. Her no-nonsense style of batting is pretty much evident from the ball-by-ball commentary. After she got her eye in (quickly), just see her tirade from the 40th over onwards.
Smriti Mandhana is a special talent, with her timing and gritty nature, and in conjunction with Thirush Kamini (she can hit with some power!), ensured a sedate start.
We have some special talent in the womens side: let us hope that they can blossom well, and the BCCI can support them as much as they do to the mens team.
Cheers, Sumantra.

What a way to win, 3-2. Way to go, Indian ladies!
Deepti Sharma had an all-round day. One can just guess Thirush Kamini's hitting skills, from her analysis: 62 off 78 balls (not that impressive), but with 13 fours (52 out of 62 came through hits to the fence!). She takes her time to get her eye in, but does pack in some power. The other muscle power in the team, Harmanpreet had a wicket and a catch to her credit. I have seen a bit of the batting of Thirush Kamini, Harmanpreet, Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana on TV/the Internet, and the stark contrast of the two pairs, while excelling all the same, is nice to watch. Smriti's grit is representative of the Bombay school of batting, so to say. I have not seen the spinners that much, or Niranjana, but they must be good as as to always have NZ on the mat, in this match. The Indian eves may be close to the rock bottom right now, but yes, with adequate support, this incredible talent should bear more fruit.
Cheers, Sumantra.

yep, good show by the ladies.

Coming back to the blokes, it would be interesting to see how our second rung side under Rahane will do in Zimbabwe. I don't think they should underestimate Zimbabwe but knowing our chaps, anything is possible.

A beautifully crafted story on Danish Kaneria, by that wonderful Cricinfo correspondent from Pakistan, who really writes very well.

A lovely away victory, after the heart-breaker in the first test. Well done, India. It was nice to see Ashwin bring out his variations, once the stock ball was just going like a dream. The subtle variations in speed, line and length, the seam-up ball, an occasional carrom-ball: he did not over-do any of these variations. Ishant bowling quite fast here, with fewer no-balls was a nice change. Mishra bowled very well as well. Most of the batsmen did well as well. Kudos to Kohli for some good leadership as well.

It is sad to see Sanga leave the scene. The Sanga-Mahela pair were incredibly popular across the world, and among their fans as well, being extremely down-to-earth people, in addition to their incredible talent. The same Kohli who does not blink an eyelid before sledging opponents, ensured a perfect gentleman's send-off for the legend. It is a credit to both teams, and the Sri Lankan crowd, to see a game played exactly in the spirit of the game. These Sri Lankan stars have shown how to fight battles and win them: on the cricket field, and in a war-ravaged country, these idols bring hope, and cheer. Sanga, we will miss you.

Cheers, Sumantra.

A very satisfying victory by a young team under Kohli. There were patches when things got a bit rough, but Kohli handled them well. The big take-home was a great performance on a green top by the bowlers (who also batted well!). Angelo Mathews continues to impress with his all-round abilities, and would count himself unlucky to be on the losing side. It was nice seeing Ishant bowl very well with some of his old 140kmph-plus speed, and sharp bounce. Ashwin and Mishra make a great pair. This series has been a revelation for some dogged Indian batting not jsut by the bowlers: we have seen great innings from Lokesh Rahul, Vijay, Pujara, Rahane, Binny, Saha: it has been a great team effort, with a great effort in the field as well. Great job, men...we loved it. Beating SL in SL was not an easy job, more so, being 0-1 down and staring at the barrel from a winning position. Keep up the momentum, going into the South Africa series, which will be a tremendous test of character. This will be a different kettle of fish altogether, and a much tougher test on bouncy wickets, but this is a job well-started by a young team. All the best!
Cheers, Sumantra.

It is early days yet, but Kohli is turning out to be an impressive captain.

I like his aggression, and the way he backs the younger, more inexperienced players.

The South Africa series will be played in India, on flat as pancake wickets.

India will do well, with our two spinners. SA have only Tahir.

But expect the SA batsmen to make merry. They know the Indian wickets well, thanks to their IPL experience.
