Birlas' Dakota aircraft sold to pay BCI staff salaries
29 January 2015
A 1946 Dakota aircraft, owned by B.K. Birla Group, and extensively used by G.D. Birla and his family members, is being dismantled in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain.
The unused aircraft had gone under the hammer in July 2013.
The auction was held following the instructions of the Madhya Pradesh High Court to disburse the pending salary of former employees of Bharat Commerce & Industry (BCI). The BCI, which falls under the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs, was shut down in 2000.
Rajesh Sharma, general manager, Grasim Industries, Nagda in Ujjain district of the state, told mediapersons: “The parts of the plane are being dismantled by engineers of Dakota itself. Its parts will be taken to Gulbarga.”
The bid for the aircraft was reportedly bagged by a West Bengal-based firm. This week, two years after the bidding, a team of engineers from Dakota started dismantling the plane that is standing on the Nagda airstrip once used by the Birla Group.
According to old timers, the Dakota aircraft took its last sortie from Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1990. In all likelihood, the parts of the rare aircraft will be transported to the Kesoram Cement plant in Gulbarga district of Karnataka where it might find a home.

How sad!
and how very narrow minded and silly on the part of the Birlas to allow such an important part of their family heritage to come to this.
Surely they could have restored it, and kept it at one of their Institutes of technologies to train students or something like that. The cost would have been nothing for people of their financial stature. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

G.D. Birla's VT-CYT is located at the Birla Museum, Pilani: one of the finest science museums around. I have sweet memories of a 1988 visit to the place. It was in good shape back then, and given the maintenance at the museum, it should be in fair shape now as well. The Nagda DC-3 is possibly the interestingly-named/registered VT-AUM, and there is hope for it at its new home in Gulbarga (whose dry weather should also suit it fine).
Cheers, Sumantra. |

A sad event; hope they put it up for display in KA.
Who are the Dakota engineers? Engineers from the Dakota tribe - shoddy reporting. _________________ My Flickr photos

Hi Guys
I wouldnt read to much into what the press reports.
The aircraft is being moved and will this will certainly give it a new lease of life and ensure it survives for a lot longer than it would have done at Nagda.
The aircraft was really suffering in the industrial enviroment.
I can ensure you Mr.Goat a lot of people are only to aware of the aircraft and its history and this will preserve that for many more years.
I am sure in the coming yesrs many people will get to see and enjoy the aeroplane in a far better condition and enviroment to that it has been accustomed to.
