Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council publishes factual data report on TransAsia Airways Flight GE222

Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council stated (26-Dec-2014) TransAsia Airways Flight GE222 crashed on Penghu Islands on 23-Jul-2014 as both the pilot and the co-pilot failed to see the runway. The incident occurred as the aircraft was attempting an emergencing landing in heavy rains and winds in the wake of Typhoon Matmo. The accident resulted in 48 fatalities and 10 serious injuries. Five residents on ground suffered minor injuries. The data report into the incident noted that the transcript of the flight voice recorder shows that around 20 seconds prior to the crash, both the pilot and the co-pilot failed to see the runway. Aviation Safety Council Executive Director Thomas Wang also found that the aircraft was heading in the wrong direction, with Mr Wang stating: "We also discovered that the airplane wrongly went left when it was descending. We need to further find out what caused the situation". A complete investigation report will be finalised in Oct-2015. |

Did not see the runway - no surprise given the typhoon force rain/ wind.
Going in the wrong direction?
Landing in the wrong place?
What were those instruments doing? And why weren't the pilots looking at the data they had at hand?
Sounds like a major F up if they failed to see the runway and failed to monitor all the instrumentation to ensure they're landing the right place.
Am I missing something?
