[AI111/112 sees Boeing 777-300ER operating, instead of Boeing 787-8, while AI115/116 operates with Boeing 787 instead of 777. ]

Currently AI111/112 is performed by the 77w and the other one is done by the 788 so whats the operation change?

Are there any conxns ex-BHX ? AI should delay dep ex-DEL to have more ground time at DEL than BHX. The return cannot be earlier, but I think then the layover will be longer.

So Birmingham's not (and likely never has bee, not even for a minute) a profitable route for Air India.

Yet they want to increase frequency.

And they do so with three weeks notice, after the busy season has already started and most of their target clientele have already made plans?

Finally, the Jet Asia’s aircraft left for Thailand in the wee hours of Friday. But, the incidents that occurred before its departure were quite interesting.

The aircraft went through the process of defueling after its fuelling as the pilots did not have enough money to clear the fuel bill.

The Jet Asia paid over Rs 10 lakh for parking and fuel amount. After getting permission for take-off from the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA), on Thursday evening, the crew offered to make the payment through online, but the local administration instructed them to make cash payment only without which they won’t allow the aircraft to take-off.

While passing through security scan of luggage of the crew, the aircraft also received fuel. The petro company here gave the required fuel for flying to Bangkok via Mumbai but the pilots did not have enough money to pay the fuel bill, so they had to agree for defueling.

The whole process took 3 hours. The aircraft, which had to take off at Thursday midnight, left for Thailand at 3.34 am.

It seems shortage of fund is just not the issue with Indian airliners, the foreign airlines too face such bitter experiences.

Jet Asia Airways specializes in Block Charter, Full Charter, Ad-Hoc and Wet Lease (ACMI) Operations. It operates daily scheduled chartered flights between Bangkok and Tokyo. Its fleet of Boeing 767s enables it to provide versatile solutions for medium and long haul market. The aircraft was deployed by Air-India to fetch Hajis from Madina and it landed at city airport on November 9, since then in the absence of flying permission from the DGCA, the plane and crew remained stranded in the city.

"Consistent with our strategy of diversifying the customer base and geography for our leased aircraft we are pleased to announce this new client and geographic diversification into India. We welcome Air India Regional as an operator and are pleased to have secured additional export credit finance for India," said Executive Chairman Jeff Chatfield.

Saw one of these take off early monday morning from Runway 09, I thought it's good the 330s are still flying and not sitting idle. Only later to know that it was its ferry flight back to the lessor. So long 332s.. Smile

Air India is reportedly considering moving its Tiruchi city office to the airport, a move which has attracted criticism with travel agents (The Hindu, 09-Dec-2014). The city office is currently located in a rented building near Karumandapam on Dindigul Highway, less than 2km away from the Central Bus Stand. It is expected to be moved within a couple of months to the airport as part of cost-cutting measures for the airline. Travel Agents Association of India -South Tamil Nadu Chapter chairman M S Paramasivam cautioned that passengers would be inconvenienced by the move, noting: “They would have to stand in queues in the counters at the airport and cannot expect the same convenience as in the city office". Air India Express currently operates 21 weekly services to/from Tiruchi.

It seems LHR got an unexpected visit from Air India's VT-EVA- Agra today. The 747-400 performed the BOM-LHR-BOM route of the AI 131/0. I wish Air India could deploy these majestic birds on better routes than the shady Jeddah ones.

Following demand from the crew for a fully flat bed rest area, Air India is planning to have bunks installed for pilots in its Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

AI's move comes days after the union of the erstwhile Indian Airlines' pilots asked its members not to perform two landings on the long Australia-India sector as the Dreamliner flies between Melbourne and Sydney before coming to Delhi. The union says two landings on this flight would lead to fatigue due to inadequate rest, something that AI is trying to remedy now.

"The flat bed is in the discussion stage and no decision has been taken yet on providing the same on future aircraft (Dreamliners) for flights with duration of 12 hours or more," said a senior official.

AI has finalized a design for the bunk which is similar to Jet Airways' two-tier bunk. The design will be sent to Boeing so that the firm can get the same approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and then incorporate it in future Dreamliners to be delivered to AI.

An airline can do ultra-long nonstop flights by having more pilots on board. The pilots can rotate on flying duty with periods of rest for each. Resting on a fully-flat bed means that their time is counted as 100% rest, while resting on a seat spells partial rest for the purpose of determining flight duty time.

AI has so far taken delivery of 18 B-787s and three more are expected by next June. If approved by AI and Boeing, the bunk is likely to be installed in six of the 27 Dreamliners to be delivered after mid-2015.

The airline has written to the government, saying that it be allowed to buy planes (called financial lease) by taking bridge loans. AI's logic is that returning an aircraft to the leasor after the 12-year-lease gets over involves a huge charge. "The redelivery charge can be in the range of $10-15 million for narrow body aircraft and as high as $15-25 million for wide body planes like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner," said a senior official.

Air India’s fully-owned regional Subsidiary Airline Allied Services Limited under Brand Name “Alliance Air” today introduced its first newest ATR 72-600 aircraft into its fleet. The aircraft, leased from Singapore-based leasing firm Avation, is the first out of five that the airline will receive until July next year. This brand new ATR 76-600 is configured with 70-seats, and will bring additional capacity to passengers flying on the regional network of the airline across the country. Thanks to their new “Armonia cabin”, the ATR 72-600s will also propose to passengers the highest and most modern standards of comfort.

Alliance Air currently has 4 ATR 42-320s among its fleet of regional aircraft. The outstanding performance of the ATR 72-600s make it the only 70-seat aircraft able to operate at each airport currently served by the airline. It also offers the lowest fuel-burn and seat mile cost on its segment. The aircraft is fitted with Pratt & Whitney 127M engines, and features a full-glass cockpit with the most modern navigation aid tools.

Mr. Rohit Nandan, Chairman, Alliance Air stated that “We are pleased to introduce into our fleet an aircraft which has clearly become the new reference among all regional planes. The ATRs have proven for years their reliability and their ability to bring our passengers to every destination of our regional network”.

Patrick de Castelbajac, ATR Chief Executive Officer, said that “We have partnered with Alliance Air for more than 10 years, and we are honored by this new proof of confidence in the ATR aircraft family. The new ATR 72-600 perfectly fit with the aim of the airline to progressively renew their fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft, while adding seat-capacity into their main routes.”

As of today, ATR has more than 20 aircraft flying in India. It also has a Bangalore-based customer support center.

I hope they start with code sharing with UA on BOM/DEL-EWR and AI's own US flights. And a solid code sharing with AC on it's proposed DEL-YYZ service, let AI pitch that heavily on both ends, and sell tickets on the plane, and get a good cut for it's "marketing".

On monday, the 15th of dec, I saw an AI 787 sitting on the tarmac at BOM with its engine cowling open. There was nobody around it. Possibly some maintenance issue with the aircraft that led to the 744 switch on AI131.

Maybe they were waiting for some parts from VT-ANI Wink

I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

If AI also introduces flight to Toronto, both AC and AI and also Jet will lose. AC could quit first because it is not as subsidized as AI is, after AC quits, may be AI could break even. But for a while both will lose lots of money. There is only room for one more airline and that too no more than 4 times a week. Not sure about Jet's long term plans to Toronto if both AC and AI start services.

Air India is planning to ramp up capacity on the domestic sector by inducting one B747, one B777-200LR and one B777-300ER to clear the holiday rush. In addition, it is also planning to induct one additional B787 on the domestic route.

Remember AI's nonstop left yyz for del at 10 or 11am - horrible for premium fares. AI should fly the 4 days that AC doesnt and the two airlines should essentially JV on the route. That would make the most sense

If AI also introduces flight to Toronto, both AC and AI and also Jet will lose. AC could quit first because it is not as subsidized as AI is, after AC quits, may be AI could break even. But for a while both will lose lots of money. There is only room for one more airline and that too no more than 4 times a week. Not sure about Jet's long term plans to Toronto if both AC and AI start services.


Even more important for AC/ AI to collaborate and lock up traffic on this route. Perhaps AI can fly 3 days a week, while AC can fly the remaining 4 days, keeping similar schedules and maintaining easy connections from DEL to ATQ/ IXC/ BOM etc. to/from DEL.

Air India has taken steps to ensure that its flights on Dubai-Delhi sector operate seamlessly during fog in the winter season in north India.

"With the decision to deploy B77-300 Extended Range aircraft, we have made an extra capacity of 85 seats available for the travelling public during this period of peak demand," Prem Sagar, Manager, Dubai & Northern Emirates, told PTI here.

Air India has pressed into service aircraft which can land safely during fog with trained pilots and crew members with the CAT 3 system. This system helps flights to land safely even during fog.

"CAT 3 landing can be done in virtually zero visibility, when runway visibility is just 50 meters. It is purely an instrument approach, based on precision radio signals from ground based station," he said.

Air India has deployed Boeing-777 Extended Range aircraft on Delhi-Dubai-Delhi sector during fog period as it is Cat 3 B cleared, which is the highest category to land in India during fog.

"We basically want all are onward passengers to travel seamlessly upto final destinations like Lucknow/Patna and beyond," he said.

The carrier during this period will have more seating capacity with 341 seats in place of earlier 256. So the airline is able to offer more number of seats in economy class to cater to the high demand during this period.

Come January, the airline will restart providing free meals for economy class passengers on flights of up to one hour. The airline had decided to withdraw serving meals to flyers on flights which were up to one hour long in 2012 as a part of its cost cutting exercise. This decision is now being reviewed for various reasons including the fact that the airline has joined Star Alliance and so there has been a substantial increase in the number of international passengers flying on domestic sectors using the hub and spoke model which requires passengers to wait for long hours in the transit area before taking their connecting flight.

02 Jan 2015: I was lucky to board AI 020 DEL-CCU, from the International terminal, from gate 08, which faces North. I caught a sight of...guess what!
One of the highlights of the spotting session was Air India
Regional's first ATR-72-600, VT-AII, the `eye catcher (I, I!)'
plane. It was indeed an eye-catching plane. It was parked at a
IGIA T2 remote stand in front of the Emirates works. Here are two
images of the beauty!





In another shocker, there were five DEL-CCU flights that day, the fifth one was a 3.5 hour AT4 flight! 9pm-12:30am? What wass this? A positioning
between DEL and CCU for an ATR, also opened for an over-booked sector that day? It was registered as AI 9401, DEL-CCU. Our plane `NE' the North-East plane VT-ANE, was 100% full: in both J as well as Y.

Great Catch, Sumantra!

The theory of a positioning flight is very likely. AI recently announced plans of dedicating a second ATR 42 to the N-E region. so this might have been it. OR it could just be a random plane heading to CCU for maintenance, maybe. Confused

The Tripura government has turned down a proposal from Air India to start operating a small ATR aircraft of Alliance Air on the Agartala-Kolkata route because it wants an assurance from the state to bear possible losses incurred in the operation of the flight.

A senior officer of the transport department said on Sunday that the state government had turned down the proposal and made it clear that the state could not pay compensation towards any claim of loss.

"ATR aircraft was withdrawn from the Agartala route two years ago by Air India without any valid reason. Moreover, passengers do not want to fly in the small, old aircraft and we don't recommend ATR aircraft in the Agartala sector due to safety reasons," he said.

He said that to meet the demand, at least two more 180-seater Boeing aircrafts are needed on the Agartala-Kolkata and Agartala-Delhi via Guwahati routes.

"Instead of bringing in bigger flights and maintaining time schedules, the state-sponsored Air India proposed to start an ATR flight and is also trying to shift responsibility on to the state government, which is not acceptable at all," he said.

"At a time when Air India is facing a financial crisis, Tripura has given them an opportunity in the Agartala sector, as Air India is still preferred by Indians, but the airline's management is not taking up the opportunity and is instead allowing private airlines to cash in on the demand," the official said.

He also alleged that Air India had been operating a single Boeing aircraft in the Agartala sector in the most irregular manner while Indigo was operating five flights and SpiceJet three flights on the Agartala-Kolkata and Agartala-Guwahati routes.

With cash-starved SpiceJet reducing its flights and closing operations to smaller towns, state-run Air India has charted out its plan to make most of the opportunity. It plans to pull out medium-capacity airplanes from metro routes and deploy them on short-haul routes. Besides, its wholly-owned subsidiary Alliance Air would be leasing a total of five ATR72 regional jets to serve smaller cities like Surat and Allahabad.

“We are trying to ramp up our capacity in the domestic market and fill the gap left by SpiceJet. We have decided to deploy bigger airplanes like B777ER and B787 on dense metro routes and take out narrow-body aircraft from there for putting them on regional routes”, a senior Air India official said.
