Although it actually won't make an iota of difference, apart from keeping small players like Afghanistan's Safi Airways and Bangladesh's United Airways out of India. The biggest competitors for Indian carriers are well established airlines, all of whom have more than 20 aircraft and have been flying for more than 5 years.

How about the FlyDubais of this world?

Fly Dubai is over five years old. It was founded on March 19, 2008.

Although they may have been less than five years old when they started flying to India.

If I was Indigo I would do the same thing, defend the current rule. Indigo is now the only profitable airline and they don't want Vistara or Air Asia India to take away customers from the international market. India now has ample competition on all sectors.

An example of applying the 5 year rule evenly would have affected FlyDubai and may be Air Arabia, so it does affect Indian carriers.

You can't say you like it when it works for you and against it when it doesn't. That's why India and Indian aviation has become such a joke.

This rule was bad when they passed it because it affected only Indian carriers. It never should have been instituted. But as far as Indigo, they never requested relaxation of the rule, they patiently waited for 5 years before starting to fly international and that is why they are now objecting.

IndiGo to take 12 planes on lease from Tigerair

Aug 22, 2014

IndiGo, India's largest airline in terms of domestic carriage, is taking on lease two planes every month from Singapore-based Tigerair from October to next March — which means adding 12 new planes to its current fleet of 79 by the end of this fiscal.

While IndiGo refused to comment, sources say the LCC is eying to have as many slots as possible at busy airports next summer. The fleet is being expanded at a time when the budget airline is expected to launch its IPO, which means it will get funds for expansion. The airline has now become eligible for FDI too as its promoter's FDI holding is being converted to NRI holding, freeing up the 49% space that can be held by foreign airlines or FIIs.

The airline said the 12 planes will be progressively delivered to IndiGo over a period of six months commencing October 2014. Each aircraft will be subleased for between three and four years at a discount to the original lease rates, Tigerair said.

Most of these aircraft were previously operated by Tigerair Philippines and Tigerair Mandala and had been returned to the group upon its divestment of Tigerair Philippines in March 2014 and Tigerair Mandala’s cessation of operations in July 2014.

IndiGo could place big aircraft order by early 2015, say sources

October 14, 2014

IndiGo is close to placing a large order worth billions of dollars for a variety of aircraft and could reach a decision as early as 2015, according to several industry sources.

IndiGo, country's largest airline by market share, could pick up a combination of regional planes that can seat up to 100 passengers, narrowbody aircraft such as the Airbus Group NV A320s that it already operates, and widebody jets for launching medium- to long-haul services, said Binit Somia, the director of South Asia at industry consultancy CAPA, at a conference on Tuesday. He added that an order was imminent.

Two other industry sources familiar with orders by Indian airlines confirmed that the airline was actively looking for aircraft and could make a decision by early 2015. Both sources declined to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Any plans for widebody aircraft would mark a switch in IndiGo's business model, which has so far focused on domestic and international flights of up to five hours, and make it the first Indian long-haul, low-cost airline.

The order under consideration could include around 100 more A320s, the sources said. The airline, which competes with SpiceJet and GoAir in its home market, operates 83 A320 aircraft and placed orders in 2011 for 180 more, largely for the upgraded re-engined A320neo variants, with deliveries expected to begin early next year. The airline has also inked a deal to take 12 A320s from Singapore's Tiger Airways on lease.

These aircraft will allow IndiGo to retire its older aircraft and keep the average age of its fleet to around six years, helping to keep operating costs down.

The airline could also look at jet and turboprop regional aircraft, such as those built by Brazil's Embraer SA, Canada's Bombardier Inc and European joint venture ATR, the sources said. These would allow it to connect Indian hubs with smaller cities where there is growing demand for air services but 180-seat A320s would be hard to fill.

If the order includes widebody aircraft like the Airbus A330, it would be able to take on full-service carriers like Jet Airways (India), Air India, Emirates Airline and Singapore Airlines by offering services of eight to nine hours.

One of the sources cautioned, however, that IndiGo had not made a decision on whether it would move into the medium- to long-haul business.

New planes to serve underutilised aviation market

The order has been placed keeping in mind the expected increase in demand and under-penetration in the Indian market, says Aditya Ghosh

IndiGo, recently in news for placing a 250 aircraft A320 NEO order, and a deal with Tiger airways is adding capacity on domestic sector.

Effective winter schedule, it is adding flights on Bengaluru – Delhi and Delhi – Goa sector. This will be 9th Daily flight on Bengaluru – Delhi and 4th Daily on Delhi – Goa.

6E399 DEL1150 – 1450GOI D
6E398 GOI1445 – 1720DEL D

6E507 DEL1840 – 2050BLR D
6E508 BLR0820 – 1050DEL D

Considering the long gap at Bengaluru, from 2050 till 0820, an international leg in future may not be ruled out. The international leg could be to one of its existing stations, with Dubai being the most likely and the alternative being Singapore.

IndiGo adding second daily to Coimbatore

IndiGo will add one rotation from 17th November from Delhi, which will operate Delhi – Coimbatore – Chennai – Kolkata and vice versa. This will be 2nd Daily non-stop service on the Delhi – Coimbatore sector, 3rd Daily on Chennai – Coimbatore and 5th Daily on Chennai – Kolkata sector.

IndiGo has monopoly on the non-stop Delhi – Coimbatore sector, whereas it would have maximum seats & frequency on Kolkata – Chennai sector, where Air India and Spicejet operate one and three daily flights respectively

The new flights would operate as below.

6E397 DEL0640 – 0925CJB D
6E272 CJB1000 – 1055MAA D
6E272 MAA1140 – 1345CCU D
6E275 CCU1415 – 1645MAA D
6E275 MAA1715 – 1820CJB D
6E396 CJB1850 – 2200DEL D

This rotation will start after delivery of its 100th aircraft on order and last of the initial order placed in 2005. The aircraft is likely to be registered as VT-IAY.

Jet Airways, operated the Coimbatore – Chennai – Kolkata leg as part of its Ahmedabad – Bengaluru – Coimbatore – Chennai – Kolkata rotation but pulled out after operating for two seasons.

This is a classic case of how a lean airline with low cost base can sustain, survive and grow as compared to one with financial liability. Only IndiGo has survived on the Ahmedabad – Bengaluru sector, which has been tried and shut by other airlines like Jet Airways, Go Air and Spicejet.

I hope 6E uses the long night halt to launch an intl destination ex-BLR - both DXB and SIN are good options. That being said, AI's tiny A319 used to fly BLR-SIN half empty most days, don't know if that was AI or was that due to low demand on the route. If 6E can bring connecting pax to the flight, that should help considerably.

The $40 billion jet buying spree — IndiGo's big bet

Quote:
NEW DELHI/PARIS: Almost four years ago a handful of people gathered in Airbus sales chief John Leahy's spacious country house outside Toulouse and argued long into the evening over curry and cigars.

Last weekend they met up again at a Parisian hotel for more haggling, with breaks taken at a nearby cafe where the informality of old business friendships mingled with hard—nosed negotiations typical of the aircraft industry.

The sum total of money discussed over these meals? About $40 billion at catalogue prices, and the bill was for 430 jets, all sold to the same Indian airline — IndiGo, the low—cost carrier which has grown to become the country's biggest airline in eight years of operating.

Represented according to insiders by co—founder Rakesh Gangwal and President Aditya Ghosh, IndiGo has now made aircraft industry history twice in four years — each time by placing record orders for Airbus planes, including last Wednesday's announcement that it will buy 250 A320neo jets.

The largest order in India's aviation history is IndiGo's most aggressive bet yet that Indian air travel is on the cusp of a huge expansion, and that the model that made it the nation's only profitable carrier will keep working as competition intensifies.

"IndiGo is showing us the level of confidence it has in its own sustainability, in the long—term growth of aviation and in the future performance of the Indian economy," said Harsh Vardhan, chairman at Delhi—based Starair Consulting.

Airline industry executives are hoping India's weak economy will rebound under new Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that the government will press for cuts to jet fuel tax and build more airports, slashing costs and opening up new markets.

Higher disposable incomes, an expanding middle class and rapid urbanisation have made India one of the world's fastest—growing domestic aviation markets, where passenger numbers are expected to grow by more than 75 percent in the next six years to exceed 217 million.

According to Airbus executive vice—president and the president of its India operations Kiran Rao, optimism about growth in Indian aircraft demand is rising.

But few airlines have translated that optimism into new orders on the scale of IndiGo's since most are losing money.

"People are too focused on India's negatives. IndiGo is aware of the challenges and it is adept at steering itself around them. That is how it became India's largest carrier," said one source familiar with the airline's thinking.

"There is, however, a great deal of optimism about the future within the airline and that comes right from the top."

Ghosh told Reuters last week India was a "highly underpenetrated market" and that a lot of the new planes would be for growth rather than replacing older aircraft.

Staying in profit

Despite more Indians flying, fierce competition and high costs have left airlines including SpiceJet, Jet Airways and state—run Air India losing cash fast. The sector will lose up to $1.4 billion more this financial year, according to consultancy CAPA.

Privately held, IndiGo does not disclose its full accounts but is the only major Indian carrier which says it is profitable. It reported a sixfold rise in net profit to 7.87 billion rupees ($128 million) in the 2012—13 financial year, and has since expanded its market share to about 32 percent.

Founded in 2006 by travel entrepreneur Rahul Bhatia and Gangwal, a former chief executive of US Airways and an old hand in executing game—changing aircraft orders, IndiGo has relied almost entirely on the sale and leaseback model to fuel its growth.

IndiGo buys a single line of planes in bulk at discounts, and then sells them to leasing companies around the time they are delivered, leasing the planes back and retiring the aircraft within six years to avoid depreciation and maintenance costs.

This keeps capital costs low and its balance sheet light, and is a strategy some analysts say hands it up—front cash to meet operating costs and tips it into profitability as rivals succumb to losses.

"IndiGo is also a good customer and in a good cashflow position, which means that there is little chance of default. In India IndiGo is probably the best customer for lessors," said one person familiar with the leasing negotiations.

IndiGo denies that the sale and leaseback model is the reason it makes money, and instead points to an advertising budget which is less than 1 percent of revenues, the fast turnaround of its fleet and its high level of seat sales as a proportion of capacity compared with its rivals.

The airline says it will also stick to the standard low—cost operator's strategy of flying a single type of narrowbody plane within India and to a handful of overseas destinations.

Competition and ambition

IndiGo's ascent is not without its risks, however.

An end to the era of cheap borrowing to finance its plane orders would raise its costs, and should India's fragile economic recovery wilt IndiGo would be left facing delivery of 250 Airbus planes from 2018 that it would struggle to fill.

Increased competition in a notoriously cut—throat Indian market plagued by overcapacity could throw up the biggest hurdle to IndiGo's ambitions, analysts say.

Once—profitable airlines like Jet, which went from market leader in the 1990s to today's sprawling international carrier, have turned loss—making in the last two years as fares fell faster than they could cut costs.

Meanwhile Malaysia—based budget carrier AirAsia launched its first Indian flight in June, bringing in an airline which manages to operate with one of the lowest unit costs per kilometre flown in the industry. AirAsia India did not respond to requests for comment on IndiGo.

"The biggest risk for IndiGo is how the competition behaves, whether AirAsia and others respond more aggressively now," said Starair's Vardhan.

6E has done a massive renumbering of flights, with new series introduced and a lot of flights which were so far with single number, being changed.

Looks like that is after review of through pax

Also withdrawing 1 freq on BOM JAI BOM eff 5Nov

Base aircraft from BOM, which used to go to NAG in the morning, would now go to BDQ. Earlier BLR-BOM-BDQ-DEL routing changed, and DEL-BDQ will turnaround as BDQ-DEL and base BOM-BDQ, back to BOM

Ameya - can you help me understand this better - perhaps with an example? How does renumbering help and what is the connection with through pax?

Earlier they operated 6E 212 BLR BOM BDQ DEL or 6E 153 DEL AMD BLR or 6E 523 PNQ CCU DIB

The flight numbers and rotations are so changed that flights now operate, BLR BOM standalone, BOM-BDQ-BOM, DEL-BDQ-DEL, DEL-AMD-DEL and BLR - AMD BLR
This way the crew is back to base after these two segments and will reduce away from base nights for the crew, thus reducing cost

On the other hand PNQ CCU DIB, the rotation will remain the same, however, with very few pax transiting from PNQ to DIB, they will de link the flights and not sell it as a conxn, this way if due to bad wx in winter, the flight is disrupted at CCU, then you dont have a pax who is half way with you and neither pax nor airline is aware about how to handle this

IndiGo to welcome 100th A320 in 100th month

November 3, 2014

IndiGo is set to celebrate another milestone. The airline is all ready to welcome its 100th A320 in the 100th month of its first flight. The aircraft will touch down in Delhi on November 4.

“It’s a great moment for us and it’s a matter of pride to be the airline which is sailing smoothly when other airlines are struggling and facing strong headwinds,” a senior IndiGo official said.

Thats a century... And the final one of the first order.

All new additions now will be that of the 12 Tiger Air jets till the deliveries of NEOs begin hopefully after about 12 months from now.

Will there more short term leasing till the NEO deliveries get streamlined or these 12 Tiger Air jets would be enough?

Weren't there 30 CEOs in the second order ? Pesumably at least some of them will come before the NEOs.

IndiGO gets 100th aircraft

November 4, 2014

IndiGo today inducted its 100th airplane, completing its first order of many Airbus A-320 aircraft placed with the French manufacturer in 2005.

The A-320 plane landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport this morning, enabling IndiGo, which holds India's largest aviation market share, to join the league of Air India and Jet Airways which also have over 100 planes in their respective fleets.

The completion of its first order came weeks after it placed the largest global aircraft order for 250 of the latest Airbus A-320 neo aircraft worth over USD 25.5 billion or Rs 1.55 lakh crore.

In 2011, IndiGo had placed its second order of 180 A-320 neos planes worth about USD 11 billion, which was the largest-ever at that time.

The Gurgaon-based no-frills airline, which commenced operations in August 2006, had placed its first order of 100 A-320s at the Paris Air Show in 2005 and took the delivery of the first aircraft on July 28, 2006 and the last one today.

Airbus Industrie's latest order book figures for the month of October show IndiGo Airlines has converted orders for twenty A321neo into the smaller A320neo. The aircraft are part of a June 2011 order for 180 A320ceo and A320neo family aircraft.

IndiGo plans to add dozen aircraft over next 6 months

Nov 21 2014

IndiGo plans to add two aircraft a month to its fleet over the next six months—beginning next week—in a bid to beef up its operations and take on rival Tata Sons start-ups AirAsia India and Vistara.

Leased from Tiger Airways, the dozen planes will mark the biggest expansion IndiGo has undertaken in a six-month period since its inception in 2006. The airline has typically added about 10-14 aircraft in a year to its fleet.

“The first ones will start joining from next week,” said Aditya Ghosh, president of IndiGo, in an interview.

IndiGo has a fleet of 84 aircraft. Having inducted all 100 aircraft it ordered first in 2006, it sent back 16 that were on six-year term leases—common for most IndiGo aircraft.

Till October next year, therefore, the airline did not have any aircraft delivery scheduled from Airbus.

To bridge this gap, the airline has leased nearly 12 planes from Singapore-headquartered Tiger Airways with a configuration of 180 seats. The aircraft have been leased for about three years and will start arriving at the Delhi airport from next week.

The move will help IndGo take its fleet strength to as many as 96 aircraft by April, after which Airbus NEOs, the new fuel-efficient version of Airbus A320 aircraft, will start joining its fleet.

Would we see 6E operate more flights between MAA and BLR . They currently have just 2 flights a day whereas the likes of 9W and even SG for that matter have multiple dailies between these two cities .

Those two airlines deploy ATRs and Q400s, so a capacity comparison might throw a better light on this. Moreover, some of 9W's flights proceed to other destinations from BLR, eg: a 737 on MAA-BLR-GOI, an ATR on MAA-BLR-IXE, etc.

9W has 8 flights a day (almost) - of which 4 are ATR, and 4 on 737. Of these the morning JetKonnect flight does MAA-BLR-DEL-IXJ/LKO. As Varun mentioned another goes onward to GOI and an ATR to IXE

SG does 6 times a day all Q400.

For three year lease, it doesnt make sense to reconfigure the aircraft. May be just paint it.

Qatar Airways CEO: 'If IndiGo offers us 49 per cent, Qatar Airways will be extremely interested'
News
8-Jan-2015 10:40 AM
Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker said no airline in India suits Qatar Airways for investment except IndiGo, stating: “If IndiGo offers us 49 per cent, Qatar Airways will be extremely interested" (The Hindu Business Line, 07-Jan-2015).

Qatar Airways seeks more access to India, labels IndiGo as only efficient carrier in India
News
8-Jan-2015 10:26 AM
Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker requested the India Government provide it with more access to India stating: "You have lost Kingfisher. You have nearly lost SpiceJet. You have GoAir and Air India, which are struggling. So, you have only one efficient carrier, that is IndiGo" (The Hindu Business Line, 07-Jan-2015). He continued: “India cannot depend upon one carrier. I know there are Vistara and AirAsia, but an airline does not grow overnight. They need at least 5-10 years to reach their potential. So, the Indian Government should open up the market for established carriers like Qatar Airways". At present, airlines from Qatar and India can provide over 24,000 weekly seats on each side, which Qatar Airways wants raised to at least 50,000. He noted that the traffic rights between the two countries were not commensurate with the close economic relationship between the two nations.

Why would 6E want to offer 49% on a platter to AAB? What does QR thinks it has that makes it so attractive (yes - money, but that's only attractive if you're desparate).

Qatar in the recent past has made enough diplomatic boo boos and this statement will absolutely not go down well with the Indians. AAB hasn't faced the wrath of Indian bureaucracy so far, if he does he will never open his mouth in the press.

AAB does not seem worried about ruffling any feathers - from the way he routinely messes with the aircraft suppliers! So long as he's blowing general hot air, I don't think anyone will bother about him.

IndiGo to lease more planes in move to take on new entrants

IndiGo is in talks with aircraft lessors to lease anywhere between four to eight planes to take its fleet size above 100. “There may be 100 planes in IndiGo fleet this summer,” said a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified.

^^ Man - 6E is going hyper - first the Tiger air 12 birds, and now another 4-6 birds? All in addition to their own birds they're steadily getting?

What's 6E's game plan? More international coverage? Or more regional connectivity in India? Or more metro frequencies?

IIRC, They're not steadily getting planes, they've almost exhausted their original order for 100+30 planes, and theres' still 9 odd months before the NEO's start coming in.

Its sort of amazing. We first have the news reports be that indian aviation is in the dumps and more airlines will close, and then we see massive aircraft orders. India, both domestic and international, seems to be all about capacity dumping to stop new entrants. Any idea why Indigo isn't looking to tie up with a foreign airline (not necessarily investment, but at least alliance or a JV)? Also why no wide bodies? If norweigian can make a 787 work transatlantic, I am sire Indigo can make it work a few select international routes.

100 aircraft order is exhausted. The 30 CEO were moved to NEO - rightly so since NEO will be more cost effective and the CEO they take in 2015 will remain with them atleast till 2021
THe margins they would get with lessors with SLB for CEO is actually negative in current market conditions for the CEO

There are ample 320 CEO available in the market. Only concern is - these birds may reduce the dispatch reliability
