http://leehamnews.com/2014/10/21/exclusive-airbus-launches-a321neolr-long-range-to-replace-757-200w/
Airbus has started marketing a long-range, higher gross weight version of the A321neo that it says will have 100nm more range than the Boeing 757-200W used on long range, trans-Atlantic routes, Leeham News and Comment has confirmed.
We learned three weeks ago Airbus was working on what we will call the A321neoLR (Long Range); Airbus doesn’t yet have a name for it, but began showing the details to airlines a week ago. The airplane is a higher gross weight aircraft, at 97 tonnes, and will have three auxiliary fuel tanks. With most long-range 757 configurations around 169 seats (United Airlines), the A321neoLR will have 164 seats, a slight loss, with 20 lie-flat business seats and the remainder in coach configuration.
Smart move this, by Airbus. They have cornered a nice niche. Boeing was scratching its head over this all the while. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Yes - this is a good move - though I wonder if this will work (in terms of ETOPS and range) for the trans-atlantic market? In that case, this will be superb - and I would expect even airlines like TK to buy this in droves for long thin routes - say IST-MAA type of routes. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Given its 4100 nm range, I wonder if carriers like 6E can acquire a few and operate them from places like BOM/AMD/DEL to low cost UK airports like London Stansted or Luton. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

This 164 pax is dual class, single class would restrict the range I believe and thus making it not so viable for the likes of 6E. But this could indeed be something which Air asia may look at to open new markets and its going to be cheaper than A330s ! _________________ www.networkthoughts.com |

I presume Boeing's 737 MAX 9 will technically be its direct competitor? _________________ Yeah. |

Yes, but the A321neoLR will have at least 500 nm greater range than the Max 9. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).
