AAI spent a lot of money in trying to extend the second runway at the Chennai airport. Does anyone know if it is being used on a daily basis? How much of it is usable? Are there still any doubts about the strength of the bridge over the Adayar river? Is it at all possible for large aircraft to land on it in the near future? I am wondering if there are any more technical issues or is it purely financial.

This is a bit off-topic, but I have memories of our flight:
IC 589 MAA-TRZ-TRV (-SHJ) [01:10 pm - 02:00 pm; 02:45 pm - 03:25 pm]
taking off from the secondary runway. It was 05 Mar (Wed), 2008.
I had talked to the Captain also that that time, telling him that I was excited to have been on a flight using MAA's secondary runway in operation. The plane was an old double bogey A320, in the original Indian Airlines livery. On a different note, `The Bridge over the River Adyar' sounds interesting!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Can they acquire some more land on the Manapakkam side, extend the runway further and make it usable for the heavies?

Newspapers had reported as that the Adyar side extension was the only one possible, I have no idea about the ground truth.
Cheers, Sumantra.

A look at it on google maps suggests that no extension is possible in any direction. There are constructions all around and land acquisition and clearance will be big issues.

Many years ago, there was some talk of a proposed new airport at Sriperumbudur. Wonder what happened to that?

One end of it (towards the city) ends perpendicularly to a high way. The high way is a main entry point into the city. So no expansion on this side.

A concern often thrown about is the lack of ILS facilities on the secondary runway, and that it makes it unusable.

There also seems to be opposition in general to using it. Not sure why.
