Four years prison time for Jayalalithaa(aaaah) , plus one more if she doesn't cough up the 100 crore fine.

Automatic, instant disqualification as MLA and CM, And ineligible to contest for or hold political office for 10 years.

And her "friend" gets to accompany her, so at least the household isn't broken up.

Still, like a cockroach, I wouldn't write Amma off yet. And of course, this could just be an interregnum, with a puppet plonked on the throne whilst Amma's cooling her sarees for a bit.

Should she appeal, all of this is null and void right?

Can't believe it's taken 18 years for this regardless.

Good! Now I hope Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel, Naveen Jindal, Vijay Mallya and other sundry thieves follow suit.

My happiness at this news is somewhat dampened by today's reminder (courtesy of her supporters) about the sheer stupidity and arrogance of vast numbers of our fellow citizens. Sad

This case involved around 60 crores, seems a pittance compared to whats going on these days.

How about going after the Coal, 2G scams that involve a much higher number?

This is a case of Justice delayed too much. I'd blame judiciary for all the spillover civic unrest thats happening. Unfortunately, with all the "percieved" good work she has done with Amma-whatnots, she will surely garner a lot of sympathies.
The bad part (for her) is that like RJD, its a one-person party. So AIADMK will definitely be under some existential pressure. They would have to align morethan ever with BJP. Lets see how that works with Namo's clean governance.

The worst part is that the alternative is just as bad or worse for the people of TN.

Exactly. Well said.

Somehow the justice system in India seems to work faster if there is a Southie at the receiving end. It showed with A.Raja, Kanimozhi, Kalmadi, Sashi Tharoor (close shave), The Reddy brothers, The Satyam guy and now Jayalalithaa. And she is not just a Southie but a Brahmin and a lady as well. Two more reasons that mark her out.

Not supporting Jayalalithaa though. She should have been in jail a long time ago. But it would be nice if some of the bigger looters from other parts of the country face justice.

The only hope I have is that those stupid enough to give their own lives on account of Amma do so before they breed. Darwin's theories at work...

I recently read an Amnesty International report that said that India had one of the World's largest populations of undertrials in jail.

Literally hundreds of thousands of undertrials are languishing in Indian jails. Their crime - the courts haven't been able to hear and try their cases yet.

Many of them are innocent, and a very large number of them have been in jail for much longer than even the stipulated punishment stated in the law for their crimes.

And then we have high profile, convicted criminals walking free.

Our legal system is a joke, much like everything else in so-called Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic India.
