Airbus will launch A320 re-engining program Wednesday

Airbus will launch a program to outfit its single-aisle A320 family aircraft with new, more-efficient engines Wednesday, according to reports from FlightBlogger and The Wall Street Journal.

The Airbus A320 NEO (New Engine Option) will use variants of Pratt & Whitney's PW1000G and CFM Leap-X engines, with an entry into service of the initial A320 model targeted for 2016, according the reports.

Boeing executives have said they will decide early next year whether to re-engine the 737, although they appear more likely to launch a program for a replacement aircraft that would enter service around 2020.

Boeing and Airbus each have more than 2,000 single-aisle airliners in their order backlog and, respectively, expect airlines to demand around 21,000 and 17,000 total single-aisle airliners over the next 20 years.

But the Canadian Bombardier CSeries, Chinese Comac C919 and Russian United Aircraft Corp. MS-21 are entering the market with new 100-plus-seat airliners that feature newer engines and designs. The Canadian and Russian jets will use new Pratt engines, while the C919 will use CFM's Leap-X.

Airbus offers new fuel saving engine options for A320 Family - The A320neo
1 December 2010 - Press Release

Airbus has decided to offer for its best-selling A320 Family new fuel saving engines as an option. Airlines have the choice between CFM International’s LEAP-X engine and Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G engine. Known as the A320neo, this new engine option also incorporates fuel-saving large wing tip devices called Sharklets. Airbus will start deliveries of the A320neo Family in spring 2016.

The A320neo will not only deliver significant fuel savings of up to 15 percent, which represents up to 3,600 tonnes of CO2 savings annually per A320neo. In addition, A320neo customers will benefit from a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions, reduced engine noise, lower operating costs and up to 500nm (950 km) more range or two tonnes more payload.

As new engine technologies become available in the middle of this decade, Airbus is committed to providing its customers with the latest and most eco-efficient technologies to continuously improve aircraft performance and airline operations while reducing the environmental impact. Airbus sees a market potential of 4,000 A320neo Family aircraft over the next 15 years.

“We are confident that the A320neo will be a great success across all markets and with all types of operators, offering them maximum benefit with minimum change. We are leveraging a reliable, mature aircraft and are making it even more efficient and environmentally friendly,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO.

Over the past months, Airbus has taken the time to carefully assess and weigh up the benefits of the A320neo business case with the allocation of the highly skilled engineering resources needed while at the same time securing the engineering skills required on other Airbus aircraft programmes.

"Finding the necessary resources for the A320neo wasn't exactly a walk in the park,” Enders added. “The enabler was to devise a stringent phasing of critical engineering assets throughout our various development programmes and to optimise the management and organisation of all our programmes and R&T projects. Our international engineering centres, suppliers and partners play a big role in this.”

Today’s A320neo announcement follows the approval given by the Board of Directors of EADS, Airbus’ shareholder company.

The new engine option is offered on the A321, A320 and A319 models which will require limited modifications, primarily to the wing and pylon areas. The A320neo will have over 95 percent airframe commonality with the standard A320 Family. The unique Airbus operational commonality enables operators of several Airbus Family types to continue to benefit from lower pilot and maintenance training costs.

Airbus launched its new “Sharklet” large wingtip devices, specially designed to enhance the eco-efficiency and payload-range performance of the A320 Family. Offered as a forward-fit option, Sharklets are expected to result in at least 3.5 percent lower fuel burn over longer sectors. The A320 will be the first model fitted with Sharklets, which will be delivered around the end of 2012, to be followed by the other A320 Family models from 2013.

The A320 Family is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. With over 6,700 aircraft sold, and more than 4,400 aircraft delivered to some 310 customers and operators worldwide, it is the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. With 99.7 per cent reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single aisle aircraft.

It is rumoured that the prospective launch customer for A320neo may be IndiGo, Qatar Airways or Lufthansa. No official announcements yet, except from LH, that states that they are in the process of evaluation.

Leap-X selected to power airbus A320neo

EVENDALE, Ohio - Airbus today announced that it has selected CFM International's advanced LEAP-X engine as part of its offering for the new A320neo (new engine option). The new airplane/engine combination could enter commercial service by spring 2016.

"We are obviously honored to be part of this exciting program," said Eric Bachelet, president and CEO of CFM International. "This is a natural extension of the long and very successful relationship we have enjoyed with Airbus since the inception of the A320 Family program in the early 1980s. CFM pledges its full support to the A320neo's development and certification and to its successful entry into commercial service."

CFM launched the new LEAP-X engine as a totally new centerline engine in 2008. Since then, the company has held extensive discussions with potential customers around the globe, both airlines and leasing companies, to help define LEAP-X engine configuration to ensure that it meets their fundamental requirements: reliability, fuel efficiency, maintenance costs, and environmental performance.

Tom Enders, Airbus president and CEO stated, "We are confident that the A320neo will be a great success across all markets and with all types of operators, offering them maximum benefit with minimum change. We are leveraging a reliable, mature aircraft and are making it even more efficient and environmentally friendly."

With a base of more than 500 customers, and more than 21,500 engines delivered, CFM has consistently delivered on its commitments. Since the first A320 was launched in 1985, CFM56 engines have been selected to power approximately 55 percent of all A320 family aircraft.

CFM brings to industry its experience of an unrivaled successful 50/50 partnership between GE and Snecma (Safran group). This partnership has been extended to the year 2040.

CFM is currently receiving hardware for the build-up of eCore Demonstrator 2, which will begin testing in mid-2011. eCore Demo 2 will feature a 10-stage high-pressure compressor and two-stage high-pressure turbine, along with the lean burn, low emissions TAPS combustor. CFM will run a third core configuration in 2012, just prior to the first full LEAP-X1C engine test in early 2013.

At the same time, CFM is set to begin endurance testing of the advanced 3-D Woven Resin Transfer Molding (3-DW RTM) fan, which, along with the composite fan case, will complete a demanding 5,000-cycle endurance test program in the first quarter of 2011. It has successfully logged 165 hours of extensive crosswind and acoustics testing to measure noise levels under various operating conditions. The MASCOT fan demonstrator engine will accumulate approximately 400 additional hours full-scale in 2010 and 2011.

A320neo entry advances to 2015 with PW as lead engine
05/04/11

Airbus is bringing forward the entry-into-service date for its A320neo to October 2015, and designated Pratt & Whitney's PW1100G turbofan as the lead development engine.

The decision advances the arrival of the A320neo by around six months, the airframer having previously identified the second quarter of 2016 as the date of introduction.

Airbus is also swapping the schedule for the other re-engined variants. The A319neo will become the second variant produced, six months later, rather than the A321neo.

Speaking in Toulouse today, Airbus chief operating officer for customers John Leahy said: "We've managed that due to demand and our capability to do so."

Airbus has not, however, identified a launch operator.

Leahy says he expects the total sales of the A320neo to exceed 500 aircraft by the Paris air show in June, having logged commitments for more than 300.

He expects to disclose another Latin American customer for the type - Brazil's TAM having already been identified - within the next couple of weeks, and adds that there are also new customers lined up in Asia and Europe.

Airbus' decision to nominate the PW1100G as lead engine will allow industrial development of the re-engined A320 variant to "begin in earnest", says the airframer.

Advancement of the schedule means Airbus will develop the A319neo - probably a PW1100G-powered aircraft - six months later and the A321neo six months after that.

Leahy expects the CFM International to emerge with its Leap-X engine up to nine months behind the lead powerplant schedule, although "no longer than a year".

Indian carrier IndiGo, lessor International Lease Finance and Lufthansa have all opted for the PW1100G for their A320neos.

Airbus is to use eight prototype airframes for the overall development programme, in order to account for all permutations of aircraft and engine variants, as well as both flight management system options.

To distinguish new build non-neo A320s from the A320neo, Airbus has begun using the nomenclature "A320ceo (current engine option)".

Airbus is enhancing its A320 Family jetliners with fuel-saving Sharklets, which are available as an option on new-build A320ceo (current engine option) aircraft and are standard on the A320 (new engine option) product line.

Still much in line with the original frame of the A320 series in terms of overall look. Shows its design back then was good enough for well into the future application.
Looking at the 737’s:

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar al Baker says his airline remains hopeful it will take delivery of its maiden A320neo - A7-AJB (cn 6772) - before the end of the year despite recent reports Airbus Industrie has now named Lufthansa as the type's launch operator.

With the Qataris unwilling to accept delivery of the aircraft in such a state, the European manufacturer has now offered the mantle of launch operator to Lufthansa. While a tentative delivery date of December 22 has been mentioned, it is still subject to regulatory concerns being addressed as well as the two sides being able to reach an agreement on financial
compensation for the airline.

http://atwonline.com/airframes/lufthansa-not-qatar-be-airbus-a320neo-launch-operator#

Lufthansa, not Qatar, to be Airbus A320neo launch operator

Dec 9, 2015

Airbus is making a last-minute swap and now plans to deliver the first Airbus A320neo to Lufthansa, not to Qatar Airways.

According to industry sources, the change was made because of operational restrictions that are still in place for the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine, pending some hardware and software changes. Pratt is working on hardware changes to the bearing of the engine shaft and a software update. Until those changes are made, the engine has to run in idle for 3 min. following startup. The aircraft cannot taxi under its own power until the 3 min. have elapsed.

According to the sources, Qatar Airways has told Airbus that it is not prepared to take the aircraft under these circumstances, and will not do so until the restrictions are lifted. Changes are expected to be implemented within a matter of weeks.

Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr confirmed to ATW’s sister publication Aviation Daily that his airline has agreed, in principle, to take the first A320neo. Some regulatory issues have to be sorted out and the airline expects to be financially compensated for the operational restrictions that are in place for now. The negotiations could, therefore, still fail. However, if the two sides come to an agreement, the first A320neo is now expected to be delivered to Lufthansa from Hamburg-Finkenwerder on Dec. 22, which would enable Airbus to stick to its target of delivering the first aircraft before the end of the year.

Lufthansa plans to introduce the first A320neo into revenue service on Jan. 6. Because of the limitations to the engine it plans to deploy it on the Frankfurt-Hamburg route initially—it has large maintenance bases on both ends of it. The airline plans to take five A320neos in 2016.

Qatar Airways is now planned to become the second A320neo operator, followed by Indian low-cost carrier Indigo.

Lufthansa has ordered 101 A320neo-family aircraft. Qatar Airways has ordered a combined 50 A320neos and A321neos. Indigo is the largest single customer for the aircraft, with orders for 430 aircraft.

First A320neo delivery opens new era in commercial aviation
Lufthansa becomes launch customer of best-selling A320neo

20 January 2016

The Lufthansa Group, Airbus’ largest airline customer and operator, marks a major step in aviation history today by taking delivery of the first A320neo, the world’s best-selling and most fuel efficient single aisle aircraft.

Equipped with all new technology Pratt & Whitney PurePower® Geared Turbofan™ engines, the A320neo sets a new, even higher standard in aircraft efficiency, reducing emissions and noise as well as burning 15% less fuel than current generation aircraft from day one and 20% less by 2020.

“We are happy that today we are the first airline worldwide to receive the Airbus A320neo. Featuring the leading technology of Airbus and Pratt & Whitney, the A320neo is by far the most efficient and most silent aircraft on short- and medium-haul routes.

With lower fuel consumption and consequently lower CO2 emissions, the A320neo has a clearly improved environmental performance. Furthermore, the new jet engine technology makes the aircraft considerably quieter. As a result, we have ordered a total of 116 aircraft of this type for the airlines of the Lufthansa Group”, states Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

“Today we prove once again that as an aviation company and airline group we are pioneers in the development and introduction of technical innovations. In this year alone the Lufthansa Group will receive a total of 52 new aircraft, a number we have not received in years”, says Spohr.

“Pratt & Whitney congratulates Lufthansa as the launch customer for the A320neo aircraft powered by PW1100G-JM engines,” said Robert Leduc, Pratt & Whitney President.. “Airbus and Lufthansa have been important customers for Pratt & Whitney for many years. With the A320neo’s unprecedented reductions in fuel burn, emissions and noise, I am confident that these business relationships will have continued success for many years to come.”

“Handing over the first A320neo to a world’s leading airline and long standing Airbus customer, Lufthansa, is a truly great day for everyone at Airbus,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO. “This occasion marks a new step forward to delivering on our promises and meeting our industry’s goal for sustainable aviation. The A320neo embodies Airbus’ passion and commitment to deliver maximum value and efficiency to our customers through continuous innovations.“

The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices. With almost 4,500 orders received from nearly 80 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 percent share of the market.

Airbus weighs new long-range A321 version

June 18, 2018

Airbus is considering adding extra endurance to the longest-range version of its A321 passenger jet in a further effort to pre-empt a potential new mid-market jet being studied by U.S. rival Boeing, industry sources said.

A new version called the A321XLR is the latest study on the drawing board in a battle of wits as both jetmakers battle for supremacy in the 200-270-seat segment, valued by analysts at hundreds of billion of dollars over 20 years.

The proposed new A321XLR would carry extra fuel and expand the range of the A321LR aircraft, which recently claimed a long-distance record for single-aisle jets in testing, the sources said, asking not to be named as the idea remains confidential.

It is expected to be aimed at North American carriers, whose ordering decisions could be decisive as Boeing weighs up whether to go ahead with plans for a new 'middle-of-the-market' aircraft.

"We do not comment on our product policy," an Airbus spokesman said.

Noting that Airbus had 80 percent of sales in the A321 category, the spokesman added, "We are under no pressure".

Airbus has been heavily outselling Boeing in the lower end of the 200-270-seat segment with the single-aisle A321, while Boeing has been dominating at the upper end with strong sales of the 787 Dreamliner at the expense of the Airbus A330neo.

This is the space into which Boeing proposes launching its 220-270 seat mid-market jet, a hybrid with the twin-aisle cabin of a wide-body jet but the smaller cargo space of a single-aisle plane thanks to a novel shape designed to fly more efficiently.

Airbus has been toying with several proposals to extend the A321's advantage and try to limit the impact of Boeing's new plane or even prompt its rival to abandon the idea.

Airbus says the A321LR, due to enter service this year, will have a maximum range of to 4,000 nautical miles (7,400 km). Boeing says the 737 MAX 10, the largest member of its competing 737 family, has a range of 3,300 nm.
