What is this nitwit talking about?

Which country is he going to attack? Taiwan? India? Japan?

It may well be a benign order to his army to be prepared for any eventuality, but the wording sure is sinister.

What can one make of this?

It could be any body in South and SE Asia. China is currently in dispute with Vietnam, Japan, Philippines, India, Taiwan. But the spat with Vietnam is turning ugly though.

Waging war on any country will surely come at a cost to China's economic growth.

I fail to see the motivation to do so, beyond glib statements such as these.

Well - he could just be playing to the audience. When addressing the army - you probably don't talk about "more flood relief work coming up" Smile

Vietnam can be cleaned up by the Chinese Army in a day, with minimum cost to their exchequer.

Japan , India, Phillipines and Taiwan are tougher propositions. I really doubt the Chinese will want to risk a war with a nuclear armed India or with the US (by taking on Taiwan, Phillipines or Japan).

But still, it is a highly irresponsible statement by Xi. Almost as bad as Dubya saying that he will do 'whatever it takes' to defend Taiwan.

Agreed. First of all, he looks hardly a nitwit- he'd rather make others look like a nitwit.
I think this is more about browbeating its neighbours. Especially India, whose importance it wants to undermine to a regional, "South Asian" level, as opposed to an influential world power. And that is a fact, let us not kid ourselves.
