Hi all,

There is a plan to visit Andaman in December. The planned itinerary is -
Day 1: Arrive Port Blair at 1300 hrs.
Go to hotel, refresh, dine, and then a tour to Cellular jail and other attractions in the evening. Hotel - Teal House.
Day 2: Go to Neil by ferry in the morning. Govt. ferry preferred as slow speed helps avoid sea-sickness.
Stay in Neil. Hotel - Have to decide.
Day 3: Go to Havelock in the morning by ferry.
Stay in Havelock. Hotel - Dolphin Resort.
Day 4: Havelock.
Day 5: Return to Port Blair in the evening.
Stay in Port Blair. Hotel - Teal House or other.
Day 6: Return from Port Blair in the afternoon.
-------------------------
Please suggest if above plan is good or not. I would prefer to enjoy the Andaman from one island rather than going to a different island every day. I can remove Neil from my list if it has similar things as Havelock and Day 2 also will be for Havelock.
I want to do SCUBA diving, snorkeling, and experiencing Coral reefs while in Havelock. My questions are -
1. Must one know how to swim in order to do SCUBA diving?
2. Must one know how to swim in order to do snorkeling?
3. Should SCUBA and snorkeling be booked in advance? Or, can it be done after reaching Havelock?
4. Can senior citizens do SCUBA and snorkeling?
5. Should the glass bottom boat rides be booked in advance, or after reaching Havelock?
6. What are the chances of getting 5 seats in helicopter from Havelock to Port Blair? These are run mainly for islanders and if seats are available, then tourists can get the seats. Photographing the islands from the helicopter is high on 'to do' list, but 8 seater helicopter service does not guarantee the seat on the planned day. What do you suggest?
7. Since senior citizens will be there, the tour is planned in a leisurely way. But if you suggest somethings 'must do' or 'must see', then the plan can be modified.
8. Is it good to rent scooters in Havelock for going to Radhanagar beach (#7) from Dolphin Resort?

Thanks in advance! I have asked too many questions but the beauty of this forum is such that knowledgeable persons are always ready to quickly answer the queries here.

You should know swimming - at least for Snorkelling. I've not done Scuba diving - but I assume you'll need to know swimming for that as well.

Neil vs. Havelock - I think they're very similar, so if you don't want to be on the move, stay on one island for longer.

I went to Andamans way back in time - perhaps 1997 or so, I'm sure things have changed dramatically since then. I remember staying on the Radhanagar beach in tents - an experience and a beach I can never ever forget!

Thanks for clearing the doubt here.

Yes, that's what we thought. And it seems there is a lot to see and experience on Havelock itself.

That is a long time ago! I think the infrastructure has improved since then. But we are looking forward to a not so polluted tourist place (in India). I could find only Barefoot resort at Radhanagar beach which is a place to splurge the money. I will check for tents also, else the govt. tourist accommodation seems to be the best place, though it will not be near Radhanagar beach.

Yes, you need to know swimming for both scuba diving and snorkeling. And I would advise against senior citizens doing either.

Thanks Spiderguy for your advice! Now we know what not to do there.

Is it a good idea to return to Port Blair in the morning instead of evening on Day 5 and go to Wandoor and stay overnight at Wandoor, come to the airport in time on Day 6 to catch the afternoon flight to mainland?

If it's of any help, this user has posted a detailed account of his trip, shunnning away Make My Trip/Yatra, etc. and doing it on his own, complete with pictures and transportation recommendations.

Does anyone have more suggestions about hotels?
Thanks!
