Navy gets first long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft

Dec 20, 2012

The Navy got the first of its eight P-8Ilong-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, armed with deadly missiles, rockets and torpedoes for potent anti-warship and anti-submarine warfare, which were contracted for $2.1 billion in 2009.

The first P-8I was handed over to an Indian naval team at the Boeing facility at Seattle in US on Wednesday. Once the second and third aircraft are also delivered, the naval team will fly the three to India in May-June.

With the other five slated to be progressively inducted by 2015, India is also negotiating the acquisition of another four P-8I to add to the eight earlier ordered. With an operating range of around 1,200 nautical miles, the dozen P-8Is will patrol the outermost layer of India's three-tier maritime surveillance grid.

What a huge downgrade in endurance, compared to the 5100 NM of the IL-38 and the 8100 NM of the TU-142! If the P-8 is going to replace the other two, we are in serious trouble.

With the TU-142 the Indian Navy has a surveillance capability over the entire Indian Ocean, spanning the whole area between the horn of Africa and the South China Sea. The P-8 will barely make it to the Persian Gulf before running out of juice.

Guess that's what bribes and kickbacks do to your defence cpapability Rolling Eyes

The P-8I is based on the 737-800 platform which can easily do a 4 hour plus sortie. This means it can easily do a West Coast to Gulf of Aden and beyond or East Coast to Malacca Strait and beyond sortie.

Also, the P-8I has in-flight refueling capability, which extends its operational range by a huge margin.

And yeah even before inflight refueling kicks in, the aircraft comes equipped with six additional body fuel tanks for extended range. In addition to this, it also has 777 style raked wingtips that reduce fuel burn and therefore increase range..

So relax! We are getting a capable ASW and ELINT aircraft! Wink

Boeing Delivers 1st P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft

SEATTLE, Dec. 20, 2012 -- Boeing on Dec. 19 made an on-site delivery of the first P-8I aircraft to the Indian Navy in Seattle, in accordance with the contract.

India will receive this aircraft and two more of its eight contracted P-8Is in 2013. The program is progressing on schedule as Boeing assembles the fourth and fifth P-8Is, which are designed for long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare.

The photo (left to right) depicts the P-8I being used for weapons testing, the P-8I delivered on-site, and the third P-8I aircraft, which recently entered the company’s mission systems installation facility.

Is this coming with Harpoon missile ? What type of armaments will be used? Yes, range is significantly reduced compared to Russian counterpart but this has refueling capacity so it makes up!

..on top of that if P-8I has more powerful radar, then it doesn't have to go to length and breadth of Indian Ocean. It can get all the info remaining close to the shores.

OK, I was not aware of the additional fuel tanks. So, what is the max range of this thing?

This is an aircraft that is going to be used around the clock for surveillance. I would imagine that having a refuelling tanker up in the air to support it would greatly increase operating costs. Granted that the Defence forces don't need to make any profit, but higher operating costs would be an issue for them too.

At Aero India in Bangalore (Feb. 6-10) Boeing P-8 India program manager, Leland Wright, said that Indian air force pilots assigned to the P-8 are being sent to the U.S. for training at the best of the Indian Government, which wrote into the contract that Indian air force P-8 pilots do training in the U.S. But he says U.S. law stipulates that pilots wishing to fly in commercial air space with a 737-800, or similar aircraft such as the P-8, must have a commercial pilot’s license. As a consequence, all the Indian air force P-8 pilots are ending up with a U.S. commercial pilot’s license recognized by the FAA, he says. That is a great deal for the pilots but the problem is it makes it very easy for the military pilots to leave and get a job in the commercial airline industry.

Correction. Its Indian Navy that is sending the pilots for training on P8I. IAF already has a pool of pilots trained on B737 for about 2 decades now.

Usually, the aircraft takes turns for being up in the air. An aircraft after finishing its loiter time returns to the base and a different aircraft with additional set of crew takes its place. Tu-142 were a real fuel guzzelers. Having said that, they have been recently modernised and are not going away anytime soon. IL-38 are the ones which are going to face axe IMO.

1st Boeing P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft Arrives in India

May 15, 2013 – The first Boeing P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft arrived today, on schedule, at India Naval Station Rajali. The P-8I is one of eight aircraft Boeing is building for India as part of a contract awarded in 2009.

“Boeing is proud to deliver this advanced aircraft to meet the Indian Navy’s unique maritime patrol requirements,” said Chris Chadwick, president of Boeing Military Aircraft. “The P-8I team, which includes our customer and Indian suppliers, has done a fantastic job working together, and we’re on track to deliver the next two P-8I aircraft later this year."

Based on the Boeing Next-Generation 737 commercial airplane, the P-8I is the Indian Navy variant of the P-8A Poseidon that Boeing is developing for the U.S. Navy. The P-8I incorporates not only India-unique design features, but also India-built subsystems that are tailored to the country’s maritime patrol requirements.

Boeing Delivers 4th P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft to India

May 23, 2014

Boeing has delivered the fourth P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to India on schedule, fulfilling the first half of a contract for eight aircraft.

The aircraft departed from Boeing Field in Seattle and arrived May 21 at Naval Air Station Rajali, where it joined three P-8Is currently undergoing operational evaluation.

“This marks an important milestone – the halfway point for P-8I deliveries to India,” said Dennis Swanson, BDS vice president in India. “The program’s success the past year is really a testament to the great work between Boeing, the Indian Navy and industry.”

“The Indian Navy is putting the first three P-8Is through their paces operationally, and the P-8I delivered today will begin flight trials in the coming months,” said Leland Wight, Boeing P-8I program manager.

India's fifth P-8 arrives for duty

The Indian Navy on 9 September received a fifth Boeing P-8I, filling out on time more than half of its planned fleet of maritime patrol aircraft.

The aircraft flew from Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington, to Naval Air Station Rajali in India, which plans to buy at least eight of the aircraft, which the nation designated P-8Is.

“The P-8I programme is progressing on schedule, and the aircraft are providing the capabilities to meet our maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare requirements,” Vice Admiral RK Pattanaik, India Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, said in a statement.

Boeing Defense, Space and Security plans to deliver another aircraft by the end of 2014 and two in 2015 under the contract awarded in 2009, says Dennis Swanson, the company’s vice-president in India.

“This is another important milestone for the programme, and we look forward to continuing our great relationship with India,” Swanson says.

Boeing Delivers Sixth P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft to India

Nov. 25, 2014

Boeing delivered the sixth P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to India, on schedule, on Nov. 24, arriving at Naval Air Station Rajali to join five others being used by the Indian Navy.

The P-8I is part of a contract of eight awarded in 2009. The final two deliveries are scheduled for 2015.

“The P-8I’s arrival in India is another key milestone for the program and marks our final delivery of the year,” said Dennis Swanson, vice president, Boeing Defense, Space & Security in India. “The Indian Navy is currently conducting missions with the first five aircraft, and this newest P-8I will begin flight trials in the coming months.”

Based on the company’s Next-Generation 737 commercial airplane, the P-8I is the Indian Navy variant of the P-8A Poseidon that Boeing builds for the U.S. Navy.

The P-8I incorporates not only India-unique design features, but also Indian-built sub-systems that are tailored to meet the country’s maritime patrol requirements. The P-8I features open systems architecture, advanced sensor and display technologies, and a worldwide base of suppliers, parts, and support equipment.

“We have a great partnership with India, which has helped us keep the program on schedule and on budget,” said Mark Jordan, Boeing P-8 International program manager.

Indian Navy To Buy Additional Four P-8I Maritime Surveillance Aircraft

July 9, 2015

The Indian Navy plans to buy additional four Boeing P-8I Maritime Surveillance andanti-submarine warfare Aircraft.

“The Cost Negotiating Committee (CNC) has recently completed the negotiations. The talks between the Navy and Boeing are at an advanced stage to add four more P-8I aircraft to an existing order of eight,” The Hindu daily quoted unnamed Defense Ministry official as saying Thursday.

“The CNC file would soon be sent to the Defense Ministry’s finance wing and then to the Finance Ministry for approval before the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister,” the official said.

India had signed a $ 2.2 billion contract to purchase eight P-8Is in 2009 with an optional clause for four more. The negotiations to buy four more aircraft have been going on for a year. Seven of the eight aircraft ordered earlier have already been inducted for service. The eighth aircraft is scheduled for delivery by October.

I went to the Museum of Flight the other day, and I saw this:

I'm pretty sure that I also saw 'Nausēnā' written in Devnagiri.
Could the number 27 written serve as reference point, and confirm when this birdie is ready to be delivered? Very Happy

Cheers
