Posted on my blog Is Vistara's rumored seating configuration the right mix ?
Vistara, as per news reports, will have a premium configuration of 16J (4 rows), 36Y+ (6 rows) and 96Y (16 rows). Yes these are talks and mostly speculations of how they will target mid managers who will not take Business but Premium Economy and so on. Of all the big and small companies that I know off, majority of the bookings happen with cheapest options along with airline+timing combination.
Doing some research on fares for this blog post was challenging for me since Indian aviation companies these days have an eternal sale going on. However, I did a search for D+21 days with a Monday/Friday combination for peak traffic tariff. The fare varied between 4000(SG) – 9110(9W) with an average of 5500 for most of the flights. For the same dates, business class fare on Air India or Jet Airways ranged from 26000 to 42000!! Go - Business with its European style middle seat empty business class was available at 10000, less than a 1000Rs more than the highest in economy.

Did post it in Vistara thread under civil aviation since the post would have been too long. Please click on the link to read _________________ www.networkthoughts.com |

Nice analysis as always, Sir. I am not sure how well the Euro-style premium Economy is doing for Air India, on the Delhi-Guwahati-Imphal route, which was launched on a trial basis, on the old all-Y A320 birds. I see most of my friends in the IT industry flying on the cheapest Y fares on business trips, and that is usually on LCCs. Some companies though have tie-ups with AI and 9W.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Moved to Editorial/Analysis.
For the record, having a 3-class A320 is a horrible idea, more so in the domestic skies. _________________ Yeah. |

A 3 class 320 is very strange.
Honestly though the number of premium seats (or should I say non economy) got my attention more than a planned Y+ section. 42!!!
It could work depending on what the difference is between Y and Y+, I wish them luck. None of this 'leave the middle seat empty' rubbish, if they stick with 3/3 and offer more legroom ok. Again what got me was the number of J/Y+. _________________ eP007 |

Personally I see nothing wrong in a 3 class layout - many US airlines offer this - where the Y+ is just glorified Y with more legroom and free access to the FFPs. The J is a regional J - recliner 2X2, and not a lie-flat type setup.
Having access to Y+ for FFPs would be a huge incentive for pax to switch from AI/ 9W to UK - once they up their frequencies. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

True, its not just IT but across industries due to cost. Only senior executives get to choose.
G8 has been operating an European business for a long time but has not seen success. Now it also comes with lounge access at BOM & DEL ! and all this at half the cost of a regular business. _________________ www.networkthoughts.com |

True Nimish - you are talking of the UA model in US and I know a lot of people who travel UA just for this reason.
However, will UK offer only Y+ when Y is full or they will continue to sell it as Y and upgrade people to Y+ later is something they have to see. This will be the factor which will make or break revenue _________________ www.networkthoughts.com |

Not just UA, most all US carriers have a premium seating for their FFPs. Seems like a great way to reward loyalty! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |
