New Delhi: The defence acquisition council of India's ministry of defence has cleared an Indian Air Force proposal for the purchase of 20 new Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers (AJTs) at a cost of around Rs3,600 crore. This will be in addition to the 124 AJTs already on order.

The overall Hawk AJT project, with 24 supplied directly by BAE Systems and 122 to be licenced manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in India, will finally cost around Rs20,000 crore by the time its completed by 2016-17.

The first 123 Hawks are meant to graduate rookie fighter pilots to more advanced fighter platforms. The latest order for 20 is meant to replace ageing aircraft of the IAF's crack aerobatics team, the Suryakirans.

So far, about 55 Hawks have been inducted, including the first 24 manufactured by BAE Systems.

A contract for 20 more BAE Systems Hawk Mk 132 Advanced Jet Trainers (AJTs) for the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) aerobatics display team, approved three years ago by the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD), is unlikely to be signed before 2016.

Industry sources told IHS Jane's that the MoD was "processing" the request for proposals (RfP) for the 20 Hawks. The kits would be sent to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for licence-building sometime over the next 12-16 months, the sources added.

BAE Systems said commercial discussions with HAL for the aircraft were continuing, but did not elaborate.

HAL, however, said it would be unable to begin work on the 20 Hawks until mid-2016, when it completed delivery of the 36 AJTs it is currently building for the IAF and the Indian Navy (IN).

India’s defence ministry is considering the acquisition of an additional batch of BAE Systems Hawk advanced jet trainers.

New Delhi indicates it could purchase as many as 30 examples of the Mk132 variant, which would be licence-built by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL).

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar says the requirement, chiefly for the navy, is still to be fully defined. “We are negotiating for the price and once the price negotiations are over we can announce the final numbers.”

The proposed purchase is in addition to a previously announced need for 20 aircraft to be operated by the air force’s Surya Kiran aerobatic display team. That deal has yet to be concluded, however.
