Varun Aaron is looking very good. One wonders why he has been made to sit on the sides for so long, with even mediocre bowlers like Pankaj Singh getting chances ahead of him. India's selections are truly bizarre.

I bet Ishwar Pandey is pretty good too. Hope he gets to play soon.

Pankaj has finally been listed in the wickets tally after agonising wait.

AFAS Varun Aaron is concerned, he could have played more series then he has, if it had not been for his frequent injuries.

He was a part of the test squad for Australian tour in 2011 but got injured before Indian team flew to Australia. In place of him came Umesh Yadav.

2-1 in favour of England.

What a collapse!

Awful!

Jadeja should be dropped for the Oval test. Enough is enough. He should not have been playing in the first place.

I would give that kid Ishwar Pande a go. He should be quite something, if his first class record is anything to go by.

The line up for Oval should be

Vijay, Gambhir, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Dhoni, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Aaron, Ishant/Pankaj Singh, Pandey.

Too bad we don't have enough backup bats men to replace the non performing Pujaras, Kohlis and Gambhirs.

And we should all fondly hope that Stuart Broad doesn't play and that blunts England's attack somewhat.

I think the fundamental approach of the Indians has to change in playing tests abroad with bat and bowl.

As always, India finds it very exhaustive to win one test match abroad that to win a series from there on, seem to be entirely dependant on the host team to play poorly. Instead of bettering their performance in the remainders the series, we become clueless.

If we look at most of the test series that India has won or lost playing abroad, the score line has always been either 1-0 or 1-3, as is the case in the present Indian-England test series. Of course, I would not consider some of the whitewash that India has done in the away test series against Bangladesh or a weak West Indies side.

When the top six batsmen dont fire and the tailenders loose steam......not surprising.....get practice by playing more county cricket.

So what are the positives we can take back from this series, if any?

1. A reasonably decent fast bowling attack made up of Bhuvi, Aaron, Ishant and possibly Pandey. The BCCI must get these chaps to work on their fitness and endurance.

None others , I'm afraid.

The India - England ODI is still on as I write. However, the result of this game should fill every Indian fan with worry about our chances for the WC.

Wow!! This great match between SA vs AUS brought back the memories of the epic run chase by SA in Johannesburg against AUS... Smile

I would like to see SA win the WC that has eluded them since their return to the International cricket scene in 1990.

We're back to #1 in ODIs now.

Australia have fallen to #4, thanks to their loss to Zimbabwe.

Thereby Indian cricket fans and the media will forget about the test series loss against England for the moment till the next overseas test series starts.

We should feel very disappointed for not winning the test series in England. I still consider Tests as a important form of cricket.

Not downgrading test cricket here, but I think that the focus on ODIs right now is very much warranted, seeing how close the World Cup is. India needs to play well, given that we are the defending champions.

I very much fear that given our emphasis on the ODIs and the IPL, India's future in Test Cricket looks rather bleak. We simply do not have the players with the mindset required to succeed at the test level anymore.

All we have are a bunch of slog hitting, technically deficient and money minded jokers with no real passion for the long form of the game. And don't even get me started on the administrators.

England are an embarrassment to one-day cricket.

Plodders like Cook and Bell are part of an Ashes victory somewhere down the line, hence the media ensures that they're God across all formats and that never works out well for them.

Fletcher similarly won a singular home series against Australia in 2005 and he even got an honorary citizenship of Britain for the feat.

Such an attitude will get them nowhere.

The English establishment does not care for the limited over formats.

For them, cricket is all about Tests in general and The Ashes in particular.

Looks like they're dismal failures in that too - 5-zip in the most recent Ashes, and a home loss each to Lanka and India - two sub-continental sides on green mambas.

Saeed Ajmal Banned from Bowling

http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/current/story/779257.html

Oh dear oh dear! Just when the Pakistanis were planning to unleash him on the Aussies in UAE later this year. Huge blow to their cricket.

Shocking how so many spinners have been banned/suspected of late.
Prosper Utseya, Kane Williamson, Sachitra Senanayake and now Ajmal.

And Shillingford and Samuels. The ICC is finally clamping down on chuckers, and if Murali was a 23yo today I doubt his career would have taken off.

The only spinner we have who is borderline on the limit is Ojha. Ashwin and Jadeja's actions are clean.

How about the Turbanator and Amit Mishra then?

and I agree about Murali. His action was very suspect. The Aussies always saved the worst of the sledging for him, for a good reason.

So far, none of the leg spinners have been banned for suspected bowling action.

Sunil Naraine might come under the radar for a suspected bowling action.

The West Indies start their 500th test match today. They are the third team, after England and Australia, to have reached the 500 test mark.

How far they have come, and how much they have fallen since the 1970s and 1980s when they were the best side in the World!

Maybe, the fact that they are playing their landmark test against Bangladesh says it all.

Congratulations, West Indies!

Set me thinking....

Who would feature in your India Best Test XI from the last 40 years?

My line up is this

S.M.Gavaskar
S.R.Tendulkar
R.Dravid
S.C.Ganguly (C)
G.R.Vishwanath
M.S.Dhoni (WK)
Kapil Dev ( Allrounder)
Anil Kumble
Bishen Bedi
Zaheer Khan
J.Srinath

Know that I've left out several stalwarts but this is the best Indian XI I could come up with.

No issues with choosing Ganguly as my Captain. To re-phrase what someone said about Douglas Jardine, if the fate of India depended on the outcome of a cricket match between India and a World XI, I would choose Ganguly as India's captain everytime. He was probably born to be captain.

Reckon that Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Kumble, Zak and Kapil will feature in everyone's team.

What's yours?

I'd agree with most of your picks, but Syed Kirmani will want an explanation about no. 6

Surreal performance in this new series where Rohit Sharma has won the first ODI by 13 runs from Sri Lanka Smile

Seriously though. I missed out the match but every time Rohit pisses Virat Kohli off with a run out, something special is about to come Razz

No, seriously serious now. A stunning come back by the hit-man! Well done to him, and especially for the entertainment in the last few overs! The atmosphere was electric, judging by the videos from the Eden Gardens on Facebook!

Well, the coming months are going to be filled with fast Aussie pitches, wonky NZ pitches, nasty crowds, hostile media and Mitchell Johnson on home ground. So we should let the likes of RS have fun batting on Indian highways while the good times last.

I was just looking at RS's ODI averages around the world in the last few years and this is what they look like

Australia 26.16
England 38.16
NZ 37.16
Pakistan 29.00
South Africa 12.28
Sri Lanka 14.78
West Indies 54.33
Zimbabwe 59.83
India 68.28

Rohit Sharma is the typical home ground champion and flat track/weak attack bully.

Absolutely true, Sir. This is not good preparation for matches Down Under. However, a couple of points:
- Other sides do not do well on flat tracks, and India seems to do exceedingly well on these. This also needs a special talent, which many in India seem to have. I do not see any harm in this, to bolster up our figures as long as we practice really well on green tops before setting out Down Under.
- Kapil Dev's talent comes up even more, since most of his wickets came out on lifeless flat tracks, and as a seam bowler (who also had some decent pace when he had started in the 1970s), he could prise out wickets on such tracks. His active longevity in the game also speaks for himself, though his retirement seemed a bit stretched when he was a bit past his prime. His last World Cup outing was nice, though.
- Our preparedness for hard bouncy Aussie tracks looks quite uncooked right now, with many `flat track bullies' in the side. People not too well endowed with technique to play on any surface, under any condition. Names such as Dhawan and the talented-but-completely-erratic Rohit Sharma come to mind. True. We have a few batsmen who are either technically correct, or have the right hand-eye coordination and temperament to battle it out on the hard and quick Aussie pitches: Pujara in terms of the technically correct, and perhaps Kohli, Dhoni and I would even suggest the talented and hard-working Rahane in the list: perhaps far too few, but I guess we may be completely washed out due to the paucity of batting resources. Let us be prepared to mentally face a bad loss, at least in the main part of cricket: the tests. Any nice performance will be just a bonus, a small light in a dark landscape.
- The bowling attack looks relatively nice, with pace from Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav, quick reverse swing from Shami, the control and swing of Bhuvi: things to look forward to. Ashwin may end up as a good prospect. Akshar Patel has made a mark with his control over line and length, and is hard to get away, but his outing have been only in the limited overs format. Will he fire in the tests?
- A wild thought: I wonder if the completely untried Kuldeep Yadav, the chinaman wrist-spinner may have been an interesting prospect. After all, Varun Aaron was blooded without much experience since he was a very special talent, and given his fragile body, I think the management have handled him quite well.
Cheers, Sumantra.

For once...for once they sniffed victory...
..but that's all they did..sniff victory, and not achieve it.

YES! Very Happy

Well played to Matthews though. For once he scored a century Wink

Second that. How shocking! Even the helmet doesn't offer enough protection.

Only goes to show what stuff the batsmen of the earlier , pre-helmet era were made of. They were very, very skilled, and brave in equal measure.

RIP, Phil Hughes. 26 is not an age to die. Very sad indeed!

There is a saying that, "Death Follows You Like a Shadow".

Sadly, for Phil Huges, a deadly bouncer missed his bat and hit his neck, thereby cutting his potential great cricketing life short.

RIP! My outpouring grief goes out to his family and friends. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

In the middle of all this, I would like spare some thought for the bowler Shaun Abott. It is going to haunt him for a very long time. Hope he can overcome this because it was not his fault.

So the Australia test series is finally underway. And day 1 of test 1 has already gone to Australia. With 350+ on the board and with four wickets still in hand they won't lose from here.

I couldn't watch the game so, how was the Indian bowling? From what I can tell, Aaron and Shami were quite ineffective. You don't go for 4 to 5 runs an over in a test match on the first day (normally).

Did Adelaide hire an Indian pitch curator before this event?

What a bl**dy shameful defeat. Got to feel for Kohli. He tried his best.

I cannot understand why Ashwin did not play. He would have been a handful on this pitch.

From now on Shikar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma should not be selected for overseas tours. And I would put Cheteshwar Pujara on notice as well. He seems to have definitely gone down since that 150 in Johannesburg.

Now on to Brisbane, where another carnage awaits. I don't see India winning. Hope I am proved wrong.

MSD probably retired as he did not want to play under kholi, hence the sudden declaration, else 1 more test was no addition of wear/tear.

So with the hammering by England, have India's WC chances gone for a toss now?

Or was it just a result of MSD's lackadaistical attitude? "arre, Englaand ko tho hum ukhad ke phenk denge"
