I am looking for advice from people who are familiar with or have used the BOM inter-terminal transfer bus recently.
I want to know if it is possible to use the bus while traveling on two separate tickets, how much time I should allocate between flights, and how long the transfer itself takes.
To give some more information, I will be arriving on an unknown domestic flight from BLR and transferring on to the DL flight to AMS that departs at 0110, and I want to know which flights to choose that give me optimal time between flights.
Or is it better to avoid the bus altogether and just take a taxi between terminals? _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

Yes - you can use the bus with 2 different tickets entirely. You just need an outbound intl flight, and you're allowed to board the bus.
The bus is much more streamlined now (and hopefully loads are lower with the new T2 coming up). The actual journey takes about 20 minutes and you end up at the regular entrance of the intl terminal. The wait for the bus is typically 30 minutes or less. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

In 2011 it took us 50 minutes. But it was comfortable. They didn’t ask for ticket or boarding pass. I advice everyone to avoid transshipment at BOM rather go for DEL. I don’t know the latest situation. _________________ Sabya99 |

Thanks everyone for the information. Is 3 hours between flights sufficient then, or should I go for even more time, say 4-5 hours? Asking since SG has an attractive fare that puts me in BOM at 2200, or should I go for options that arrive between 2000-2100? _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

If the fares are still the attractive ones, then I'd certainly go for the one with 4-5 hours of transit.
3 hours could be too less. You need 2 hours at least for the check in and all for international flights, then probably an hour for the entire shuttle bus thing, leaving no time for collecting bags and surely no margin for delay..
I'll suggest the 4-5 hour gap between the 2 flights.

3 hours is risky, but still possible. I would do it if it were one ticket (and the airline is responsible for a misconnect). If it's 2 tickets (and you don't have insurance covering a misconnect), I'd take a longer layover (4-5 hours should be reasonably safe). _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Based on my personal experience, it is best to stick with the bus. 3 hours normally is enough, but the bus lines can be long, especially in the hours you are arriving at.
While this is an isolated incident, about 7 years ago, but I was robbed on a taxi while going from domestic to international at BOM, my incoming flight came late and had less than 2 hrs to make the transfer. Also several years prior to my experience one of my friends was also robbed in the same way. |

Why can't they operate buses more frequently? |

Taken from the taxi stand outside the domestic airport. Was not a prepaid taxi, since the lines to prepaid taxi was also long. |
