I would be relocating to the US this fall and I intend to take my gaming PC with me as checked baggage for personal usage. Since its total declared value would be in the range of 80k, will the customs babu demand additional documentation when I declare it as an export item.

1. If you're leaving India and taking a high end PC with you - the Indian customs don't really care. It's the US customs who might have questions.

2. I assume you don't plan to bring this PC back with you at the end of your studies; if you do plan to bring it back, you might want to "Declare" it as you export it out of the country. However that becomes difficult for a PC as you have to physically show it to the customs team after emigration - which means you have to carry it as hand baggage. Plus they'll insist on the original proof of purchase + want to verify the serial number.

I'd suggest you just put it in your checked baggage, take it there, and then dump/ resell it whenever you're heading back home.

As Nimish says, the Indian customs agents most likely don't care since it is for export. I looked on the US CBP website, and it appears that the CBP will only require you to pay duty if you intend to sell it commercially.

The following is the best I could find regarding your question about moving to the US. It mentions equipment but nothing specific about computers/electronics.
