Hi,
One of my cousin is currently studying Aerospace Engg. in the US. As part of his last year studies he can do an Internship at a relevant company.
Does anyone on the forum know of someone who has done a similar program?
Location is not a constraint as I understand.
Do you know normally what channels are used to select the interns?
I can ask for and provide more information if needed.
Thanks

I never did an internship myself but have mentored quite a few interns.
Basically, it is a sort of finishing school at the end of a degree program where the candidate gets to work on a real project in an actual company. The idea is that by doing an internship, one gets to see and experience a real work environment prior to graduation.
Many times, interns are absorbed by the companies they do their internship in. Also, the interns get to make contacts in companies and get references from their managers. So it can be very useful.
The workload for interns is usually very, very heavy with little or often, no payment. The idea is that the experience gained is in itself a remuneration.
Your cousin can contact his/her university careers office for details about companies offering internships. He/she could also contact companies directly.
For example, Boeing has an internship program, the details of which can be found here
http://www.boeing.com/boeing/careers/businessintern/
as does Lockheed Martin

I am not an AE student and have never done an internship in that field, but I know several who did.
There are several ways your cousin can go about finding available internship positions. His/her university's career services should have details available, and they might even have a website where students can search for and apply for internships.
Another valuable resource is to apply directly with companies themselves. Several companies such as Boeing, GE, Lockheed Martin, etc, have quite large internship programs. The careers sections of their respective websites will allow you to see what internship positions are available.
If your cousin is an international student, he will have additional hurdles in his internship search. Many companies, especially those involved in the defense sector, will not sponsor international students for an internship. Many positions also require students to obtain specific security clearances from the DoD, which are available only to US citizens.
This does not mean that finding an internship is impossible, though. It is important to read the description, as they will specify whether international students will be sponsored or not.
Networking with professionals is key for increasing his chances of obtaining an internship. If your cousin is on good terms with his professors, they can be a valuable resource, as they will have lots of contacts in the industry. They can get him in touch with a contact at a company he is interested in, and can also provide a recommendation.
Going forward, I would advise him to meet with professionals, pay attention to available positions, and make note of application deadlines. If he wants to do an internship for the Fall, many deadlines are approaching quickly.
Best of luck to your cousin! _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

Thank you both so much for your valuable inputs!! I will pass this info on to him.
I also searched for Rolls Royce Internship and they indeed have a dedicated section for those students looking for it. looks like most of the biggies would have such programs.
Once again thanks for the inputs!! |
