After UA & CO, here's another fallout of gas prices.....

The spiraling jet fuel cost is also forcing the airline to terminate its direct Bangkok-New York flights from July 1 and to cut flights to Los Angeles to five a week from seven, he told reporters.

Thai Airways will sell four Airbus A340-500s planes that serve long haul routes. Despite the young age of the planes, Mr. Apinan said it would be difficult to sell the long-haul aircraft as record oil prices are resulting in many airlines shifting to more profitable short- to medium-haul routes. Thai Airways bought the four Airbus planes three years ago for about $130 million each.

Yah, they've been having issues with that plane for a while and had previously announced pulling out of that route but kept it.

What effect will oil prices have on SQ's SIN-EWR/LAX nonstops. I know that the all J configuration helped a bit, but there will be a point where even business travelers stop flying and resort to teleconferencong if ticket prices continue to rise. I know that at my father's company they have a plan like that.

And I wonder how its going to affect IT's planned JFK-BLR / JFK-BOM non-stops, using the A345.

Hehe - thankfully now that AI has it's full force of 77Ls, they're not going to look at 345s. IT's another matter altogether, given the conventional operational wisdom of 345s is taking a beating (witness SQ changing to all J and TG dropping service completely) - will IT rethink their plans? Or just continue to sink more money into a big black hole? Or do they have plans that will beat SQ and TGs?

So finally confirms what has been going round for quite a while now.
Surprising that SQ is still hanging onto the A345s.

Mallya needs to do some brain storming. His leasing to/corporate charter-A345-to-America idea seems to be heading no where.
Guess that's the end of the inflight showers and the lounges/bars in even Y.

The in-flight showers were only for the a380 if im not mistaken.
The bars on the a345 will stay I presume, given that the aircrafts are ready for delivery.

The skyrocketing fuel prices are a big big worry.

Thai board balks at Saudi prince's offer for parked A340-500

21NOV2013

Thai Airways International management has resolved not to sell one of their four decommissioned A340-500s to British firm, AvCon Worldwide, despite them having already put down a deposit of USD2.5million. AvCon represents the interests of Saudi Arabia's Prince Faisal al-Saud. The Bangkok Post reports that Thai authorities had forewarned that AvCon's proposed acquisition price of USD23.5million was too low and are now considering possibilities to make use of the planes and will propose the finding to the airline's board by next month.

THAI executive vice-president Teerapol Chotichanapibal said that should the aircraft fail to find buyers, Thai would likely consider redeploying them into operational use on flights limited to 4 to 6 hours, Japan in particular. "It would be OK if [revenues] only cover their maintenance costs," he said. "It's difficult to make profits because of fuel costs of these planes are high." The Thai national carrier had placed a book value of USD66.9million on each of the aircraft which are fast disappearing from the skies given their poor fuel economy.

Thai - Saudi relations aren't very good. There may have been political pressure from both sides to ditch the deal.

Thai Airways Int'l puts its four A340-500s up for sale

Thai Airways International has officially put four of its mothballed A340-500s up for sale. According to tender documents seen by ch-aviation, the jets in question are: HS-TLA (cn 624), HS-TLB (cn 628), HS-TLC (cn 698), and HS-TLD (cn 775), all of which are parked at Bangkok Don Mueang.

The Thai carrier has set a deadline of June 11 for proposals and bids to be submitted.

A bid to sell one of the aircraft to British firm, AvCon Worldwide, which represents the interests of Saudi Arabia's Prince Faisal al-Saud, collapsed in October last year when the airline's board rejected AvCon's proposed acquisition price of USD23.5million as being too low.
