India's Quikjet completes certification, aims to relaunch

Quikjet has secured its Scheduled Air Operators Permit from the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ahead of its planned resumption of commercial operations.

The announcement follows the arrival of the Indian freight specialist's only current aircraft B737-400(F) VT-SVA (msn 28490) in October last year.

The ASL Airlines Switzerland subsidiary had previously operated scheduled domestic services with an ATR72-200(F) freighter wet-leased from its Swiss parent.

Quickjet Airlines to launch freighter services

Quickjet Airlines, which is majorly owned by Dublin-based ASL Aviation is all set to launch its freighter services in the country with its maiden cargo flight to Bengaluru from here tomorrow.

Quickjet Airlines first cargo flight is scheduled to take off for Bengaluru at 1.20 am tomorrow from the Indira Gandhi International airport here, an airline spokesperson said.

The airline said it has deployed a 21.2 tonne capacity B737-400SF jet freighter for operations in India.

Quickjet would initially connect Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, offering four daily flights and operating overnight to link Delhi with Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad in the first phase.

In the second phase, it will connect Mumbai and Kolkata as the airline seeks to cover all major metro hubs, a release said.

ASL Aviation Group holds 78 per cent stake in the Bengaluru-based QuickJet, which was granted air operator permit by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation early this month.

"Quikjet will now offer a neutral cargo service and as it grows and aims to serve multiple customers, airlines, business and industry to help enable growth. In turn, this will benefit the Indian economy and this benefit will be felt more and more as Quikjet expands its operations in the months and years ahead," Hugh Flynn, Chief Executive of ASL Aviation Group said.

The airline is launching the freighter services for Mumbai based airport-to-airport logistics services provider Sovika Aviation, the release said adding that the services will also be available for domestic and international cargo charters.

"The launch of the B737 freighter service is also the launch of a much-needed new era in the Indian air cargo industry. We are significantly improving air cargo capacity. Our newly introduced connectivity with Sovika will provide a key advantage to the booming e- commerce industry," Quickjet Airlines' Chief Executive Preetham Phillip said.

ASL Aviation Group is a global aviation services provider, having operations across six continents with a fleet of more than 100 aircraft, the release said.

Quickjet will offer airport-to-airport freighter capacity with a premium overnight network specifically designed to best serve the requirements of the express cargo, e-commerce and motor industries, it said.

India has seen huge growth in the number of passenger aircraft but the freighter segment in India has not grown, and there are now just seven freighter aircraft serving the seventh largest economy in the world, it said.

"In some cases belly space is unsuitable for large-sized shipments or certain categories of goods that cannot be shipped on passenger airlines for regulatory reasons. Our expertise and focus lies in providing much needed airport to airport air cargo connectivity," Phillip added.

ASL Aviation expects Quikjet to grow this partnership with Sovika, which is a Mumbai-headquartered airport-to-airport logistics services provider, and to expand its services to provide a range of aircraft with varying payload options to suit specific customer requirements.

"There is a real and significant market need and Quikjet is already building its capability to serve this need. We will be providing assistance and experience from the ASL airlines that currently serve the world's major express integrator brands, "Flynn added.

Quikjet Airlines (FQA, Bangalore Int'l) has taken delivery of its first B737-800(SF) as it prepares to relaunch in-house dedicated freighter operations.

N120MN (msn 30643) was ferried, post-conversion, from Jinan to Hyderabad Int'l on July 29, 2022. At 20.4 years of age, the jet is ex-Jet Time (2006) stock, owned by Marathon Asset Management, and managed by Arena Aviation Capital. It remains at Hyderabad airport and has yet to be re-registered in India. The carrier did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment on service entry dates.

Quikjet Airlines has another B737-800(BDSF) under conversion at Jinan, N110MN (msn 28382), although its delivery timeline is unclear.

The Indian cargo specialist suspended all in-house operations in 2017, retiring its only B737-400(SF). Quikjet Airlines is affiliated with ASL Aviation Holdings through ASL Airlines Switzerland (Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, CH).

Quikjet reapplies for AOC as ASL cedes control

Quikjet Airlines (FQA, Bangalore Int'l) has applied for the reactivation of its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) under the new ownership of supply-chain mogul Cyrus Guzder, the Economic Times has reported.

Guzder used to be the airline's minority shareholder when it first launched in 2016. Back then, ASL Aviation Group (since renamed as ASL Aviation Holdings) controlled a 70% stake. However, prior to its restart, the carrier's ownership structure was revised to comply with India's control and ownership rules. As such, Guzder currently owns a 51% stake, while the Irish holding controls the remaining 49%.

"The e-commerce business is picking up with same-day, and next-day delivery is becoming prominent. So, ASL thinks this is the right time to re-enter the air cargo business, and we have applied for the licences," Guzder said.

ASL refused to comment on its Quikjet investment when contacted by ch-aviation.

The cargo specialist has already received the no-objection certificate and was on the way to receiving the AOC. It took delivery of the first B737-800(SF) in early August and expects a B737-800(BDSF) shortly.

"We are talking to all major aggregators, e-commerce, and express delivery companies. It is based on conversations with our business partners that we feel that a two-aircraft operation will succeed and help us to run a profitable business," Guzder explained.

The airline was founded in 2007 but only launched in 2016 with a single B737-400(SF). It suspended operations shortly thereafter in the wake of a government-induced overnight cash crisis. It has since been dormant.

Quikjet Airlines (FQA, Bangalore Int'l) has successfully relaunched its own freighter flights with a leased B737-800(BCF) commencing revenue services in early December. The airline took delivery of VT-AAZ (formerly N120MN) (msn 30643) in August while reapplying for its air operator's certificate after a change in its shareholder structure.

On Friday, December 2, VT-AAZ initiated revenue flights with a Hyderabad Int'l - Coimbatore - Hyderabad - Bangalore Int'l - Hyderabad rotation. FlightRadar24 ADS-B data shows the plane has flown a significant number of sectors within India since then. The 20.74-year-old jet comes on a lease from Arena Aviation Capital via the MAM Aircraft Leasing 30643 (Ireland) DAC special purpose vehicle.

Founded in 2007, QuikJet formerly operated an ATR72-200(F), B737-300(F), and B737-400(SF) but suspended in-house flying in 2017 when it retired its B737-400SF. At the time, QuikJet was majority owned by ASL Aviation Holdings but that group has since sold down its stake to minority status and now supply-chain mogul Cyrus Guzder owns 51% of the business. Guzder has spoken of his desire to target the overnight express freight market.

ch-aviation has recently reported that QuikJet has a second B737-800(BDSF), N110MN (msn 28382), undergoing conversion at Jinan, China. The conversion process is now complete and that plane was ferried to Hyderabad on November 28.
