Oh that's nothing compared to the Pièce de Russistance :
And it seems they're getting plenty of criticism. Just that, in Dilly, it was the visuals of the far from complete infrastructure so close to start date that led to more noise on the corruption (both organisational and political).
Also, we can at least criticise our politicians openly (unless they're Sena / BJP / Momto!) and not fear severe goonda retribution. Criticise Putin or one of his officials and you just might end up in Gulag. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

| On the contrary Jason, look at the positives: in Computer Science, one always looks for parallel processing possibilities! Even in handling a core dump.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

No one goes to prison for criticizing Putin, Jason. The thieves/oligarchs who did prison time were caught just before they could take the loot to London/Tel Aviv. Too bad they were caught, others succeeded.
As for bad press Sochi is getting, part of it is genuine, rest is the creation of news channels like Al Jal-jeera or (19th century) Fox news!
BTW, which Olympics was without controversy or bad publicity _________________ Tally Sheet:

Quote: | SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) - The potshots and constant stream of criticism of the Sochi Olympics is starting to wear thin on some of the athletes at the Games, who can't understand what all the fuss is about. |

We are not aware of the entire level of criticism, given our media has a more interesting circus to focus on.
I think it has been a perpetual trend - if anything is held outside US/Canada/Western Europe/UK/Scandinavia/ANZ, it will undergo a thorough scrutiny on every level - even area completely unrelated - Delhi faced it for CWG, Beijing for the Olympics, SA for the world cup.. Qatar is already facing the heat and Brazil is in for a double whammy.
Deep seated prejudices makes the media blow up even the slightest of errors and question the very fact of these countries are capable of hosting such events. Beijing hosted what IMO was the best Olympics ever, but the flak it got for everything - air quality, Human Rights, Tibet, selection of children for the opening ceremony -was unprecedented. On the other hand, there was barely a murmur over what was truly a sub-par outing in London four years later. |
