World's biggest: American, US Airways vote to merge

02/13/2013

American Airlines, a storied but struggling carrier that sought bankruptcy protection 15 months ago, has agreed to merge with US Airways, creating what will be the largest carrier in the world.

After weeks of discussion and speculation, the boards for the two carriers voted on Wednesday to combine, a person close to the discussions but who was not authorized to speak publicly told USA TODAY. The deal, the particulars of which weren't disclosed, will be announced Thursday. It would still need the approval of the bankruptcy court overseeing American's restructuring, as well as federal regulators.

Back when I started working for US, I was told that the Blue-Grey livery was intended to be similar (actually, inverted) to that of UA (then with their 'battleship' livery) as a potential merger partner. UA danced with US twice during my time there, and once before.
AA's new "flag-on-the-tail" logo might be something similar to US's tail logo, perhaps indication of a similar move. I suspect AA's new colors will be that of the new airline post merger.

And here goes US from *A and here comes a new set of routes into Oneworld. OW is finally showing some momentum - with MH, QR and now US coming into the fold. Good for them!

Although its rather small and maybe an insignificant impact in the industry, UL must not be forgotten!

My bad - I'd plain forgotten about UL/OW. When is that due to happen?

For now, at least, the American Airlines livery featuring a grey fuselage and a red-and-white striped tail flash will remain. Tom Horton, chairman and chief executive of American and future non-executive chairman of the merged carrier, stood by the new livery. "Some people have observed that our new livery looks like something you might have designed if you were going to put US Air and American together," says Horton. "I think it is a great representation of the new American going forward."

US Airways brand to disappear within 18 months of AA merger closing

10JUN2013

US Airways will disappear as both a brand and an operating licence within 18 months of a planned merger with American Airlines closing, American's CEO, Tom Horton has said. The merger, however, is still subject to regulatory approval expected sometime after an August 15 hearing. Mr Horton went on the add that during the integration phase of the merger, US Airways will "likely" become an Oneworld affiliate member thereby allowing the carrier and oneworld to benefit from each other.

US Airways' switch from Star Alliance for Oneworld to be done by 2014

31JUL2013

US Airways will have left Star Alliance and joined Oneworld come the beginning of 2014, J. Scott Kirby, the airline’s president, has said. The move comes as its merger with American Airlines is set to close in late Q3 pending European and US regulatory approval. The combined entity, which will operate as American Airlines, will be the world’s largest airline in terms of passenger traffic, eclipsing rivals United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

US DOJ and six states file suit to block merger. This would throw a monkey wrench into the merger. It will certainly delay US airways entry to oneworld. Both the executives frankly have made numerous statements to wreck this merger.

It may still happen but now without siginificant concessions from the airlines at Washington National, Philadelphia and Charlotte.

Actually United, Delta and Southwest want this merger to happen so they can charge higher prices as US airways often undercuts them.

US Airways to leave Star Alliance on March 1, 2014

26NOV2013

US Airways plans to leave Star Alliance on March 1, 2014 and join Oneworld in April, Industry publication, the Frequent Business Traveller, has reported. US Airways' merger partner American Airlines was a founding member of oneworld. Scott Kirby, who will serve as the COO of the combined airline, said that January 7, 2014 will be “a big day for us.” “We will become a single airline or at least take the first step of becoming a single airline” on that day.

^^ This will be a sad day for *A, as US provides the best connectivity in the SE corridor - their hub at CLT allows them to serve many local markets in that region with multiple frequencies.

Doug Parker to let American Airlines employees decide whether to keep the new AA tail

December 16, 2013

Doug Parker, the new chief executive officer of American Airlines Group, told employees Monday that he’ll let them decide what the tail on AA jets should look like.

There will be two choices:

A. The new tail adopted last January by the old AA regime, or

B. The old tail that had been in use basically since 1968.

“As we build our new company, we want all of our employees to have a voice in who we are as an airline, and that starts with what we look like,” Parker wrote in the internal “Arrivals” newsletter. “As such, today we launched a survey for all employees of the combined company to vote on what we should do with our new look for the tail – keep the work that was done, or go back to the previous American.”

Parker has been quiet on possible changes to the livery, although he’s gotten many questions from employees in the 10 months since the American-US Airways merger was announced. But now he’s running the place and Monday made known his solution for settling the livery question.

We note that he is giving two options to employees: Keep the new design or go back to the old design. Option C, to come up with a different design, isn’t being offered, with Parker citing the cost of going to an all-new design.

We also note that all employees of the new American Airlines Group will be allowed to vote, not just employees of pre-merger American Airlines. The vote is to conclude at noon CST Jan. 2.

The new livery unveiled last January came as a result of a major airplane purchase in July 2011. A lot of the airplanes on order would not have aluminum fuselages, but composite skins. So American, which always polished the aluminum skins of its airplanes rather than paint them, would have to paint the composite fuselages.

Executives then ordered up a whole new livery, which was unveiled last January, about four weeks before American and US Airways announced their merger.

We’re told that the complicated design of the new AA tail, a stylized American flag, is pretty expensive to paint.

Other points from the newsletter:

– Parker doesn’t care one way or the other.

“People have already begun to ask me, “Which livery do you hope wins?” The answer is I honestly do not care. I think both look fantastic. As someone who began working at American in 1986, I, like many of you, am fond of the AA and think it reflects the proud history of this airline. But I also think the new branding looks great. It is bold, professional, fresh and represents American well. And the more aircraft I see painted in this scheme, the more I like it.

“What I do care about and what I am happy about is that we have found a way to let our team members provide their input to this important decision. So, it is up to you. I just ask that we get it done quickly, so we can start painting US Airways aircraft. Have fun and please vote – we want your input.”

– It is too expensive to paint the entire airplane and redo all the branding done since last January.

“However you may feel about the new livery and branding, the fact is it would be irresponsible for us to start over from scratch. There are currently more than 200 aircraft in the new livery and the new flight symbol or, ‘eagle’ as it’s sometimes called, and the related signage is up in many airports and facilities already. One of our five imperatives at American is, ‘Provide a Return for our Investors’ and we can’t do that by spending their capital redoing a lot of work that has just been recently accomplished.”

– As Parker did at US Airways, he plans to have at least one airplane painted in the colors of predecessor airlines. That means there’ll be one airplane in the old Trans World Airlines colors and one in the old American Airlines colors, even if employees vote in favor of the new AA livery.

Keep reading for his entire message in “Arrivals.”

YOU DECIDE

A Message from CEO Doug Parker

The Livery

It’s time to take care of the question on many people’s minds: now that we have merged, are we going to keep the new American livery (announced in January 2013), or are we going to do something different? It is a relevant and timely question as we now have more than 620 US Airways and US Airways Express aircraft that need to be painted in an American Airlines livery.

My View: You Decide

While I enjoy debating the merits of certain aircraft liveries as much as anyone, I have always believed they are not particularly important to the success of an airline. For our team members who work in, around and on these aircraft day in and day out, it matters a great deal, but I have yet to find a customer who based their purchase decision on the exterior design of the airplane. I think our livery should represent the American brand well-it should be professional, and it should be cost efficient – but it is not a make- or-break decision for our airline. And since it is important to our team members, I think our team members should decide.

No More Buffing – We Have to Paint

It is important to know there are some constraints on the decision. For example, we can’t continue with the traditional American buffed silver look as there is no good way to convert the US Airways fleet to polished silver because of the materials used on Airbus aircraft. In addition, the B787 and A350, both of which we have on order, are composite aircraft and that material cannot be converted to a shiny metallic look. This, of course, is the same dilemma American faced last summer as the first of a large order of unpolished aircraft began to be delivered.

Major Changes are Not Cost Effective

A second constraint is cost. One of the great things about the buffed silver livery was its cost efficiency – no paint meant less weight. And we want to continue that tradition. However you may feel about the new livery and branding, the fact is it would be irresponsible for us to start over from scratch. There are currently more than 200 aircraft in the new livery and the new flight symbol or, “eagle” as it’s sometimes called, and the related signage is up in many airports and facilities already. One of our five imperatives at American is, “Provide a Return for our Investors” and we can’t do that by spending their capital redoing a lot of work that has just been recently accomplished.

Two Livery Choices: Flag or AA?

Given those two constraints – we need to paint and we aren’t starting from scratch — we have developed two livery options. First, I think most everyone agrees the team has done an excellent of job of painting the airplanes in a color that is nicely reminiscent of our buffed silver heritage. I think the newly painted aircraft look extremely nice and have heard the same from many of you. So, we aren’t going to mess with the fuselage. That just leaves the tail. As to the tail, we have two options for you. The current flag tail or one with our traditional AA. We decided to include an AA option because we have heard from many employees that they miss the old AA with the eagle. I understand that perspective, and indeed it has some attachment to our goal to “Restore American as the Greatest Airline in the World” because it is harkens back to our proud past. The problem with this design is that it contains two different logos – the old AA and the new flight symbol. Brand experts tell us this is not ideal, that we should stick with just one. But if our team members decide they would like to keep AA on the tail of our airplanes, we will manage just fine.

It’s Up to You

People have already begun to ask me, “Which livery do you hope wins?” The answer is I honestly do not care.

What I do care about and what I am happy about is that we have found a way to let our team members provide their input to this important decision. So, it is up to you. I just ask that we get it done quickly, so we can start painting US Airways aircraft. Have fun and please vote – we want your input.

PDF version of the latest issue of “Arrivals.”

https://wings.usairways.com/uswings/news/american_merger/arrivals/121613_Arrivals_livery_outlook.pdf

It includes the following paragraph :

A Note on Heritage

Even as we look to the future, we want to embrace our history because we are proud of it. One way we will do that is through heritage liveries. US Airways has several aircraft in predecessor company liveries today, such as the PSA livery (complete with smile) shown above. We will continue that tradition at American, including introducing a TWA aircraft in the future and keeping a US Airways livery aircraft. That also means we will keep a heritage American livery in the fleet. So, regardless of the result of this vote, the AA and eagle will remain represented.

American Airlines won't change its stripes

January 3, 2014

American Airlines will stick with the red, white and blue stripes on its planes' tails.

That was the outcome of a vote by more than 60,000 employees of the world's largest airline.

The vote came about because the airline adopted a new logo and color scheme just before it announced a merger with US Airways back in February 2013.

The call to adopt the new paint job was made when Tom Horton was chief executive of the Fort Worth-based airline.

Doug Parker, former CEO of US Airways, took over the new American Airlines last month and decided to let employees decide whether to keep the new logo and design or go back to the previous design, a red and blue "AA" with a blue eagle and red and blue stripes along the length of the plane.

To avoid repainting every plane from top to bottom — at a cost of $100,000 to $200,000 apiece — Parker let workers vote only on the tail design: either the red, white and blue stripes or the old red-and-blue “AA” logo with a blue eagle.

The vote was 52% to stick with the new design.

http://www.dallasnews.com/business/airline-industry/20140103-american-eagle-will-unveil-new-name-soon.ece

American Eagle will unveil new name soon

American Airlines' regional carrier, American Eagle, plans to change its name and logo, with the changes expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks.

03 January 2014

What’s one more change at American Airlines these days? Its regional carrier, American Eagle, plans to change its name and logo.

The changes are expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks “to distinguish ourselves” from other regional carriers that fly for American, Eagle president Pedro Fábregas told employees this week in a message. American Eagle Airlines is the company-owned regional carrier for Fort Worth-based American.

“It was put on the back burner, and now it’s back,” said American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller. “American Eagle is the brand of the regional feed, but we’ve diversified that feed and now have regional service provided by other carriers … so it gets to be a little confusing.”

Miller wouldn’t disclose any possible new names or logos, but he said the company is taking into consideration the results of an Eagle employee survey from last year.

Eagle executives talked about changing the name in 2012, when American began to add other regional carriers. But that was before American and its parent AMR Corp. announced a merger with US Airways as part of its plan to emerge from bankruptcy as a more competitive carrier.

Last month, American completed the merger and emerged from bankruptcy as the world’s largest airline.

Chautauqua Airlines, ExpressJet, Republic Airlines and SkyWest all provide regional flights for American. In addition, US Airways uses a few different regional carriers.

“Looking forward to 2014, there will be both change and opportunity,” Eagle’s Fábregas said in his letter.

Those changes may include a new labor contract with its pilots, with talks starting as soon as next week

On Friday, the Eagle pilots’ union said it will make a contract counterproposal to management within a few days.

On Dec. 20, Eagle management proposed a contract with its more than 2,700 pilots that would guarantee they would get the new, larger jets they need to ensure their future if they made further concessions to help reduce the airline’s costs.

William Sprague, chairman of the Air Line Pilots Association’s Master Executive Council at Eagle, said the union decided to make a counterproposal based on “the direction that’s best for Eagle pilots” after two days of meetings in Dallas. The union plans to give its counterproposal to Eagle management within a couple of days, he said.

Sprague said Friday that he did not have specific details of what the union’s counterproposal will entail, but said it largely focuses on enhancements and protections to Eagle pilots’ career track to American.

American declined to comment on the latest development with its pilots’ union.

However, Fábregas told employees in his letter this week that “the Eagle team and the ALPA leadership team are committed to reaching an agreement.”

No meeting between union and Eagle officials has been scheduled yet. If a tentative agreement is reached by Jan. 10, it will be announced that Eagle will be getting 60 new Embraer 175 planes, or American’s management team will start considering other options to the Embraer, Fábregas said.

A letter to pilots last week from union leaders in Chicago detailed some of the concerns about changes to compensation, vacation, profit sharing, career progression and more.

American Eagle Airlines, Inc. To Change Its Name To Envoy

All Regional Air Service for American Airlines will Continue to Operate Under the American Eagle Brand and Livery

Jan. 14, 2014

American Eagle Airlines, Inc. (American Eagle Airlines), a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group Inc., announced today that the company will be changing its name to Envoy in spring 2014. This change is being made to give the company its own distinct identity and eliminate the confusion between the company's current name and American Eagle, the regional flying brand of American Airlines, Inc. With the formation of American Airlines Group, the 10 carriers currently providing regional service for the legacy American and US Airways networks will all eventually fly under the American Eagle brand.

"Our people and our company – which is one of the largest regional carriers in the world with some of the best people in our business – deserve a name that is all our own," said Pedro Fabregas, the president and CEO of American Eagle Airlines. "By taking on the Envoy name, we can better differentiate ourselves from the competition and better market ourselves. This is important for both our people and our company as we further expand our ground handling business."

American Eagle Airlines has more than 14,000 employees and a growing portfolio of business outside of its flying operations, including a robust aviation ground handling operation. Envoy was chosen as the company's new name after an extensive selection and vetting process that included looking at more than 1,000 names and considering feedback from American Eagle Airlines employees. The name was chosen because Envoy is reflective of what the company does for the airlines it works with – serving as their ambassador and a representative to their customers.

Customers traveling on both American Eagle Airlines and American Eagle-branded regional air service will not experience any changes to their travel experience as a result of this name change. Ticket counters and gates will continue to be branded American and American Eagle and Envoy's aircraft will continue to operate using the American Eagle brand and livery. Once the necessary regulatory processes and approvals are complete, "Operated by Envoy" will be added to the company's aircraft paint scheme and noted on customers' tickets much like it is for American's other regional carrier partners currently flying using the American Eagle brand.

January 30, 2014

A milestone in the mega merger of two airlines was reached Thursday as the first US Airways plane to be repainted in American Airlines' colors and logo went into service.

The two carriers are still a long way from becoming one, but the combined airline took another step in the integration process.

The legacy US Airways Airbus A319 debuted its freshly painted fuselage on a flight from Charlotte to New York's LaGuardia Airport.

The plane recently spent 13 days receiving its makeover, which included removing the existing paint before sanding, washing and applying 80 gallons of specially chosen paint to the aircraft.

"Today marks an important next step in our airlines' integration and is a tangible way for customers and employees to see the result of our progress first hand," said Scott Kirby, American Airlines president. "The integration of our airlines, including painting the rest of the US Airways fleet, will take many months as we work to deliver value through this merger for our employees, our customers and our investors."

Approximately 640 aircraft are in line to receive a similar makeover over the next few years.

By the end of June, American Airlines anticipates that more than 275 mainline and regional aircraft will be sporting the new look.

TAM and US Airways join Oneworld

Brazil’s TAM and US Airways joined Oneworld today, in a move that the alliance called its biggest single day of growth since it was launched 15 years ago.

Both TAM and US Airways left Star Alliance for Oneworld, a departure caused by two mega airline mergers involving the two carriers. TAM merged with Oneworld member LAN to form LATAM Airlines Group, while US Airways had combined with American, also a Oneworld carrier.

The two carriers, both of which operated their last flights as Star airlines yesterday, will add almost 100 new destinations to the Oneworld network. TAM will add almost 45 new cities to the alliance map, while US Airways will contribute more than 50.

US Airways' final flight marks the end of an era

16 October 2015

It's time to say farewell to US Airways. One of the USA's most storied airline brands fades away Friday night with Flight 1939.

The overnight red-eye flight from San Francisco to Philadelphia marks the last ever departure under the US Airways name as the carrier's merger with American nears completion. Shortly after the flight departs San Francisco at 9:55 p.m. PT, American will unify its own reservations systems for the flights of both airlines. There will be no more US Airways flights once the plane lands in Philadelphia, scheduled for 6:18 a.m. ET.

US Airways' fade into the history books will be a nostalgic one. Flight 1939 is scheduled to begin Friday morning in Philadelphia, a traditional US Airways stronghold. From there, the Airbus A321 – still painted in US Airways' colors – will continue to Charlotte, which grew to become the airline's busiest hub during the past decade. Next is Phoenix – the former headquarters to 2004 merger partner America West.

From there, Flight 1939 heads to San Francisco, then returns to Pennsylvania as the last-ever US Airways flight.

American will commemorate the last day with gate-side festivities at each stop. And passengers on the final departure from San Francisco will cheer the US Airways' name with an onboard champagne toast.

"We definitely wanted to give a nod to US Airways and everyone that helped us build this airline," American Airlines spokeswoman Martha Thomas told USA TODAY. "We wanted to make it a special experience for employees and customers."
