They are still available, in Mumbai at least. But the taste has changed for the worse. The recipes have been altered, sadly.

It is strange that I did not succumb to temptation the six years I was a Mumbaikar, so I am not in a position to comment on the taste. In Delhi in the 1970s, I used to like the Bedekar`kairi' one - the one made from raw mangoes.
Cheers, Sumantra.

It's the time of the year when TW and TD are holidaying in Mumbai and I get to experience the gastronomic wonders of Delhi. Monday lunch was at the Rama's Pulau near the Masjid at CP and today's lunch at Kake da Hotel.

Enjoy your forced bachelorhood - we envy you Smile.

I found Kake da hotel quite ordinary the one time I went there, and pretty dirty too. Has it improved much now?

Kake Da Hotel was as clean or as dirty as any other Delhi Dhabha. I had "Saag Meat" and "Rotis" for lunch. 'Saag meat" was really great.

There is quite a collaboration going on in that area. Most likely the "saag meat" was from the neighbour as the daal at there is invariably from here.

Don't be surprised if you are offered a glass of hot milk after a really spicy lunch, when the temperature is around 40-42 degrees.

Dinner at Karim's. Chicken Biryani was awesome but the Shami Kabab was very ordinary. I felt that it had been heated in a microwave.

Had "Nethili Fry" recently along with Chicken Biryani in a small Chetitnadu restaurant adjacent to Citi Centre Mall in MAA recently. Biriyani was average but the Nethili fry was awesome. Good VFM as portions are generous!!!!

Personally, I like the kuzhambu or the gravy versions better: the Chettinadu spice combination comes out even better there. Personal opinion, of course Smile

It did not appear and taste very fresh. Moreover, the upper layer was cracked.

Attended that pre wedding feast yesterday. For the general crowd, the host had arranged for the typical North Indian vegetarian buffet.

For a few special guests including yours sincerely, the host had arranged a special dinner on the terrace of his farm house. The items included lamb masala and 'tandoori quail" served with rotis. All these with a few pegs of Black Dog. Both the dishes were great, the meat had that 'wild taste' which you generally don't find in meat dishes served in cities.

And for the dessert, we had Ras malai loaded with dry fruits and that glass of hot masala milk.

Not that I do not like Dal-Chawal, but I also need to shed about 5kgs urgently. I'm tipping the scales at a dangerous close-to-90kgs. My healthy weight should be close to the mid-70s Sad

Sir, thanks for reviving one of my favourite threads Smile shawarma and falafal have become quite popular in Delhi since the last 15 years or so, and the doner variation is a nice take on this. I wonder if anyone has tried vegetarian versions of this delicacy. While Soya-based preparations can have similar tastes and textures, paneer/cottage cheese is perhaps better done on a horizontal grill in a traditional tikkA/skewered preparation, rather than a vertical one, since its texture is quite different. I wonder how vegetable minces would go, when done vertically, and roasted shavings taken in. What do other members feel about this?
Cheers, Sumantra.

Doner and Shawarma are the same thing. The difference is only in the accompanying salad and sauces, depending on where you buy it.

I don't know about a vegetarian equivalent. Maybe grilled tofu shavings can replace the meat.

Falafel is one of my all time favourites, particularly served on platter with tabouleh, houmous, harissa and pita bread. Yum!

Falafel!!!! I LOVE IT!

My friends are die-hard fans of Shawarma. They go to this particular Turkish restaurant in Doha. I have been there and it smells DELICIOUS!

I first had the Doners in Europe before the great Shawarma invasion hit India. For me the Doners. I used to have in Europe with the fillings is anytime better to the Shawarma you get in Kerala at least!!!!

My foodie updates over the past few months:

  • Went to my first Pooja Pandal here in Bangalore - had the "bhog" and then pigged on some chaat/ rolls after that. Great stuff.
  • Goa - lipsmacking as always. But the food is getting very pricey now. At least the booze is still cheap
  • Often have mallu fish-curry + boiled rice for lunch nowadays - a great Muslim Mallu restaurant opened up close to work
  • Discovered awesome Amritsari Kulchas in the heart of Koramangala. Very (very) dingy place, but the kulchas are delicious!
  • 1MG (the mall at Trinity Circle) has some great fine dining options. Now need to find some sponsors to take me there Smile
  • Found an absolutely brilliant rum - Two Indies - from the local Amrut distilleries

Meljoe, can you bit a bit more precise: a vaDA pAv is hard to go wrong with, unless the bread is terrible and the one would really have to do the vaDA even worse. On the other hand, something you classify as excellent - can you be a bit more specific? The bread? The cooking medium? The ingredients of the vaDA, possibly the spices?
In eager anticipation, Sumantra.

How about meeting at one of these places for lunch?

Discovered a new style of Biryani - this time it's the "Grilled chicken" Biryani. Did not like the chicken in the biryani - but the rice itself was delicious! Had this at Hotel Empire for lunch today...

That is a nice idea... An Anet India foodie meet!!! Wish I could join in. I miss the BLR outlets. Albek in RT Nagar and the small kebab outlet which opens up in the evening at the Mosque road junction just before you take the flyover towards Banaswadi. Also not to forget Bhimas at Church Street. My first introduction to Andhra food more than 15 years ago. and a must visit ever since whenever visiting Bangalore.
