After presenting The girlfriend's first attempt at planespotting, it's only fair that I share my own.

Pics taken at Hong Kong Kai Tak; Summer 1986, from the open door of an Air India 747-237.
Pardon the poor quality of scans of (rather bad) pics from a circa 1980 Kodak instamatic.

The flight engineer's son who as with us on that flight.

A view of those P&W JT9Ds. Will have to find out which airframe this was.

My father's flight crew log from June of 1986 shows her as VT-EFU "Krishna Deva Raya", doing AI-316, BKK-HKG.

Sadly, this is all that's left of EFU today (I tracked down what's left of her, last year in India).

@747-237: You are really amazing. I loved the old pictures: the Cathay Tristar and the 742 pictures. You have even preserved your father's logbook! Thanks for sharing these pictures. Where is the Krishnadeva Raya front part right now? At least it is around, and not in some beer can.
Cheers, Sumantra.

There are 6 actually.... 3 for the Air Force and 3 for Air India - every flight & airplane he ever flew for both.

A prominent Bombay socialite who is an avid aviation buff owns it. He bought most of at least one 742 as well as the 744 scrapped at BOM.

So is (part of) VT-EGC "Harsha Vardhan". She is the only other 747-237 that my father flew, that still exists in some form, and which I have been fortunate enough to track down and visit.

Who is this socialite, if I may ask? Krishnadeva Raya is the 742, which is the 744?
Harsha Vardhan: this is the one in the incorrect KLM colour scheme, right?
This is at some training school in Mumbai. I think I have seen your pictures of the same.
Cheers, Sumantra.

He asked for his privacy, so I have to respect that. Perhaps I could've used a better word than "socialite". Let's just say he is well known in Bombay among the glitterati.

That would be VT-ESM "Konark", of the engine fire fame. Infact, the insides of the present EFU flight deck are those of ESM - a 742-744 hybrid, if you will !

Yes, that's the one. She retains most of her originial components of the forward fuselage, including the spiral staircase. Sadly, her upper deck walls have beeen changed & no longer have the classic Indian design.
