A UNI report (Dec. 26) says Lufthansa has decided to switch off its wireless broadband internet links for commercial passengers at the end of the year. The company said it had no alternative after Boeing decided to scrap the inflight satellite-delivered service because it was running at a loss.
Lufthansa said it would like to continue with the inflight service, but it would take several months until it finds a new provider. Some 66 of Lufthansa’s 80 long-haul jets have been fitted with Boeing’s Connexion service since it was launch more than two years ago.
A company spokesman says passenger response had been good and the service has been available free of charge since October. Boeing announced in August that it was scrapping the Connexion service on December 31 because of a lack of interest from the major air carriers. The US planemaker invested heavily in the satellite-based system but most airlines opted for cheaper internet services using cellular networks, says the Lufthnsa release.

But why should the Airbus with LH get affected? Their A340 series?
D-ABTH might be able to help on this

Connexion was installed fleetwide on both Boeing and Airbus since the technology allowed for it.. the only thing being Boeing was the service provider.

it did not matter wether the a/c were Boeing or Airbus as far as LH was concerned. However since Boeing has decided to end the service it will naturally affect all the aircraft that are installed with the hardware.. and not only those in our fleet... SAS and the other airlines who opted for it will also have no service.

unless we decide to take over and convert it into a worthwhile profitable business... wether LH will do it alone or with a tie up i dont know at the moment.

infact D-ABTH was one of the later few jumbos to recieve the installation for the Connexion datalink antenna very recently as of mid last year or so if i remember correctly.
