So when did the fog in Delhi get this bad?

Analysts say the turning point was 1997. A cocktail of factors contributed: a shift in the land-use patterns, increased pollution, and more moisture due to irrigation led to a drop in the temperature by a few degrees and more fog between December and January, they say.

This seems to match my own memories of fog back in the early 1980s. I was a student in IIT Delhi and my hostel (Nilgiri) was directly under the flight path. We would rejoice when fog caused flight delays since we would get to sleep better at night. Unfortunately for us, the disruptions never seemed to last too long Smile

Load of Boxxxxks isn't it, there is a good 10yrs between early 80s and 1997, i was in AI in the early 90s When the DEL flts would be diverted to BOM due to FOG.

It had more to do with CAT3 being implemented at APTs across the world due to the manf of the NAV systems marketing them. The bloody FOG was always there CAT3/2/1 or otherwise. Prv the pilots were more confident cowboys than flying FBW today.
