Managed to get a decent pan of VT-EYJ. I wish I'd framed it better, though.

Nice shots.
I have also tried the same and have been successful at times. Not really easy, lot of trials and timing and practice. I've lost touch lately in panning as this spotting location has been closed for ever.

Making the background appear hazy as if to recreate fast movement. If done well like in the photos shown here, makes the object really stand out brilliantly.

Cheers

How do you make the background and foreground hazy?

The easiest way is to put the camera on shutter priority with a shutter speed below 1/100secs and then move the camera along the moving subject at its speed and then pressing the shutter maintaing the camera motion as follow through.

Typically, a shutter speed of between 15 and 30 is awesome for panning. And like C-GHKR said, you just need to move the camera with the speed of the subject.

My America west and zoom were done at 1/40 and westjet at 1/30.
1/15 is impossible for my hands, the lowest I had ever gone was 1/20 on the Korean, but was slightly blurry.
This one at 8.30pm night @ ISO 1600, really grainy

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel
Exposure: 0.05 sec (1/20)
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 70 mm
ISO Speed: 1600
Exposure Bias: 2 EV
