Nice TR.

Seems like Rohit Nandan needs to also make surprise trips on the nonstops to ensure that the standards are adequate.

Bala, another nice trip report from you - thank you for sharing it with us! Your return trip was only slightly better than the DEL-ORD leg - and this does not bode well for the ailing carrier. One would have thought that these were among the current `flagship' routes, and would be consistent, to say the least. A relative flew this route on 15 Aug - 16 Aug, and she was relatively satisfied with the food and service (she last took this flight in 2008, which was the time when this was absolutely fabulous - my only AI 101/102 trip was in December 2008, this was pre-recession, and had brought back memories of the glory days of flying. This was also the time when glowing reports came in.)
It is really unfortunate that the inconsistency has creeped in. One would have at least expected the meals to be nice (though three meal/snack runs is not too bad a thought for my gluttonous tendencies, but at least the food should have been good!). We have also been reading about some IFE issues of late - the content being poor, and the numbers, very sparse. Broken headsets, insufficiently stocked lavatories (and to think that in 2008, I had seen at least three containers - moisturising cream, mouthwash, and a soft soap on the rack), and perhaps the worst part of it - insufficient personnel and directions at IGI T3 - are not good signs. This is supposed to be their primary hub, and if Air India cannot make connections work seamlessly here, it is hard to expect them to improve anywhere else.
If people do not man the dedicated transfer desks, at least there could be people close to the jetways to make announcements (I have seen quite a few of these - both here in DEL, as well as BOM). Since DEL is my `home base', I have seen these points from outside, but expecting first-time passengers to know about the intricacies of where the transfer area is - is simply not done. Completely unacceptable.
With the new CMD, let us hope for things taking a turn for the better.
Thanks once again for a very comprehensive trip report with lots and lots of pictures.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Thanks a lot for the report justbala. such a shameful mess this airline has become, barely have a few routes where in they actually get some loads and they're just killing themselves by what they're doing!

Oh, at Due Date, Narnia and Mr Troops Mom ... WTF!
Still, why bother, they always have Jet to blame, right?

Thanks again for the pictures and the report!

Hate to say this, but it doesn't look too bad for Y Class. The meals on CO and UA (and sadly, even NH) on ULH flights in Y appear to be a lot worse, and I've been in LH J Class long haul flights that had absolutely zip in the lavs. Oh wait, they had a big turd in the lav staring up at you as if to say 'Ha Ha, scared you, didn't I?" The IFE looks sparse, and the ground experience seems to define cluelessness by the airline, but otherwise I think that you just saw the face of ULH Y Class travel. At least on AI, you get 34" of pitch.

Wellhav travelled LH/ULH on SQ, TG, 9W, BA, CX and UA.. except for UA my experience with the other carriers were good. The meals served on SQ and TG were exceptional. Plus on such a long flight, its quite often the crew that makes the difference. I am still not able to understand why you had to bamboozle through a meal service on a ULH flight?!

The meals looked pretty atrocious! Perhaps the Indian option during the first course would have looked/ tasted better. Certainly the pasta on LH's flights looks and (probably) tastes better than that fish from AI.

Ouch!!! But I agree with Jaysit, it is rare that your experience on any other airline would have been too different especially US and Europe based airlines. Of course the aunty waking people up just seems dumb. Let the people who are sleeping sleep. Less work for aunty too.

But yes with the exception of SQ and maybe a couple of the gulf airlines, what you got it what you are likely to get in Y these days.

Tell me again why this airline is still allowed to live (at vast expense to you and me)?
