The Indian Air Force is gearing up to making an attempt to set a new world record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe on a microlight.
As part of IAF’s Platinum Jubliee Celebrations, a ’Round the World’ Microlight Expedition is planned during June-August, says Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major in a UNI report.
The IAF is attempting an expedition of great magnitude in order to set a new world record for the fastest time in circumnavigating the world in the 300-500 kg weight category, Major has been quoted as saying.
The Expedition covering a distance of 37,000 km in approx 45 days would be undertaken in a German manufactured Microlight, the CTSW Advance.
The present record stands at 99 days whereas the expedition will attempt to better it to 64 days. The route entails transit through twenty countires.
Major said expedition will be a true test of both man and machine and would be a perfect showcase of IAF in Platinum Jubilee.
‘‘There will be challenges of extremes of weather, change of time zones, flying through remote and difficult terrain of different countries and interacting with various agencies all across the world,’’ he has said.
IAF is taking it as a challenge to highlight its capability in undertaking such an expedition, which embodies true spirit of aviation. The crew would be totally independent even for undertaking scheduled services.

Buzz is Major Saab is a no nonsense Parsi Gent who will really take the IAF to greater heights. Has started off very well and is very savvy, firing all cylinders.
Air India is anyway thrilled to have him. Has already made the right moves by agreeing to lend pilots.
Good luck to him.
